I have an iPhone XS. It was backed up one week ago. Yesterday, several text message threads disappeared.
I restarted the phone. I turned iMessage on and off. I turned SMS and MMS messaging on and off too. However none of the message threads returned.
Does anyone have any ideas on what the issue is or a fix?

Under settings, I went to iCloud. There is a section that says Apps using iCloud. Messages was turned off for some reason. As soon as I turned it on the missing messages started downloading back to my phone. Hope that helps someone cause I’ve spent the last 2 hours trying all the other suggestions and nothing else worked for me :-)
Having same issue on my 12 Pro, this is crazy.! Have lost many text threads, highly frustrating that they aren't figuring this out and helping us. Miss my threads! 😢
Same problem. This has happened a few times. All my settings are correct. It's not me. It's the system. wth????
Just lost three threads at least. Thought I messed up but looks like there’s a flaw in the system. Hope apple is taking notice.

Thank you so much! I’ve disabled iCloud and clicked on download messages but how do I know the messages are downloading? Don’t seem to see that anywhere
It doesn’t show. As long as you disabled messages in iCloud and then clicked on download messages that will be all you can do. Wait and see what happens.
Has anyone managed to find a solution I am having the same issue but with two contacts only ? Apple support are not being much help
Nope. Nada. All my messages long gone. No help ever received. Apple carries on with their glossy over-produced product line update, showing their priority is image, not operating reliability...
Hi I also have an iPad with no cellular account so instead of phone number I tick my Apple ID email so hope this helps .
I’m so fed up with my messages disappearing. Nothing works. You call Apple and they say they never heard of this problem. Seriously? I got nowhere with them. I’m so disgusted.
Wow. I just checked for my lost iPhone thread on my iPad and it is there. Thank you JC2327! It didn’t return to my phone however.

My my long message this morning just disappeared. How to retrieve my message.
“Lost” text… I still have not retrieved my missing texts. After looking through the cloud with no luck. My question now is, why ? Not where did they go. But Why? Were they removed.
I have messages set to keep forever. So do and some don’t How to fix?
