Hi arnoldfromriva,
I believe we need to proceed with an EtreCheck report. EtreCheck is a useful app to diagnose and identify issues, both hardware and software. It is trusted by many users. Please follow the steps outlined below:

Apple finished their review about 10 days ago. They checked hardware components- everything OK and then erased and re-installed the operating system and ran software for 24 hours- no problems found. They advised re-installing my software, e.g. MS office suite step wise to see what if any of it may be causing the problem. So, I first let computer sit for a while without re-installing anything to see if problem occurred - it didn't. Then I installed MS Office suite and that was OK.
But quite by accident I did discover that my external hard drive was apparently causing the problem which I was able to verify by disconnecting the hard drive when computer froze which immediately returned computer to normal operation.
Who woulda thought!!
Jack
Thanks for the advice. I am not quite ready for that as this is a new computer and I am waiting for apple to finish diagnosing the problem. Once done I will test and if problem persists i will do as you suggested
EtreCheck is 100% harmless and useful - just search for "EtreCheck" in the Apple Support Community and there are thousands upon thousands of positive posts about it.
What is Apple thinking the issue is?

SEAGATE Free Agent "GoFlex" drive. Interestingly it worked quite well with my older iMac and works OK intermittently on my current machine.
But since you mention the cable possibly being defective it brings to mind trouble I was having getting a secure connection recently on my older iMAC. It seemed the cable connection was erratic and I had to switch around to different ports until it stabilized. Maybe I should try a new cable?
Hard drives usually work or fail. So if it’s intermittent, it’s usually something else in-between. If that cable is removable, I’d certainly try.
one thing for sure is until the problem is found, I wouldn’t depend on it.
Have you or a 3rd-party reseller upgraded the RAM on your machine?
Don't know just yet - hopefully in a few more days; but I am suspecting maybe 3rd party software?
This computer is about 2 months old. No upgraded RAM by me or anyone else

Seems like it might have been caused by my external hard drive. See response to Jack-19
Glad it's fixed!

Well that is a first. Fascinating and great news. What kind of external drive were you using,?
maybe the cable is defective also? Would be interesting to troubleshoot that drive.
I agree - I think I'll try a new cable
