Surely I should be able to edit this footage..?

Please help if you can. Here are some details:

iMac Pro (2017)

MacOS Big Sur - 11.2.2

3.2 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon W

32 GB 2666 MHz DDR4

Radeon Pro Vega 56 8 GB

Library is on the internal iMacPro SSD

Video is - 10-bit 4k 50fps - 196 Mbit/s on new external Pegasus32 RAID0 (New) with 33.3% free space.

Thunderbolt 3 cable bought from Apple (140 GBP for 2mtrs).

The HD with this cable speed tests at well over 1000Mbps).

Problem:

One single track of video won't pay without serious stuttering.

I'm sure I should be able to play this stuff - I have three-track multicam clips to edit (not all 10bit).

How much do I have to spend to be able to play/edit this stuff please (and on what, should I spend it)?

Thanks in advance!

Andy

10-bit HEVC is super hard to process in real-time. It stutters in QT too I’d think. Either optimize or work with proxy. For 4K I’d go with proxies. Easy to create, light weight, system processes and plays back multiple tracks.

Though in theory your RAID should be able to handle it, it may be worth testing with the same media served from the built-in drive. If you can’t work smoothly with that media when coming from the built-in drive you you will need to work with proxies.

It is a good thing that FCP has a “proxies preffered” option; you need only make proxies for the files that need them.

Fantastic! Marked as "solved" because I can work with this! Thanks again, Luis.

I usually work with three angles. The main one is HEVC - the other two are 10-bit H.264, but they play pretty well. Now I can create a proxy file for just the one (problem) angle, and the whole multicam plays fine.

Thank you so much Luis, that's really helped a lot. I did have "Better performance" selected, by the way.

"Proxy Preferred" makes a massive difference!

Because of the nature of my work, I have a ton of footage. I'm trying to upgrade a lot of training videos we've made.
Converting all my Multicam clips to Proxy will use masses more HD space (insert appropriate sad emoji here).
I'm not familiar with the "proxies preferred" option, Luis, and I couldn't find any reference to it in Prefs - please explain??

This is selected from the little View menu at the top right of the Viewer:

It used to be that you had only two choices: "Optimized/Original" and "Proxy".

So even if only a few clips needed to have proxies for smooth playback, you'd have to create proxies for everything.

Now (since 10.5?), you have a third option "Proxy Preferred", as seen above.

What this means is that a proxy will be used if available, and otherwise FCP will use the optimized or original.

Suppose you have one of these "difficult" clips in a project and a bunch of 720p clips. In the old days, you'd have to make proxies for everything. Now you could make a proxy for just that clip.

Another thought that just occurred to me: did you try leaving the playback at Optimized/Original but select "Better Performance"?

Thanks Luis and Tom...

That's bad news I fear. It plays 10-bit H.264 at 149 Mbit/s but my main camera doesn't shoot that (at least, I don't think it does).

Because of the nature of my work, I have a ton of footage. I'm trying to upgrade a lot of training videos we've made. Much of the early stuff it 720p and I've been shooting 4k footage to replace it with. 10-bit seems so much easier to colour correct but the files are huge.

I see there's an iMac

Meanwhile, I'll experiment with different formats on the main camera (Panasonic CX350).
