Setting up a child's ipad

For background, my child's school requires them to have an ipad. I need to set it up in an appropriate (read restricted) way but I'm not an apple user and don't have any other apple devices so don't really know how to start.

I tried following online instructions, and set me and my child up with up icloud accounts, downloaded icloud and itunes to my PC but then couldnt get any further without my own apple device (which I don't have and can't afford).

According to the web its pretty easy if you have an existing apple device, but if you're a PC/Android user like me then its hard if not impossible?

Can anyone point me at a guide of how to set up a child's ipad (i.e. so that I can set controls over websites, apps etc)? If necessary I guess this could be as a 'standalone' child's ipad, but ideally I'd like to be able to receive requests etc via email or icloud on my android or PC.

Thanks in advance

You can setup restrictions and screen time directly on the iPad and as long as you set up a screen time passcode, then they cannot be changed.

You will not be able to set up Family sharing or get notifications on Windows or Android however.

Hey AConcernedParent,

You can monitor a child’s iPad if you set up a feature called: ‘Family Sharing’ but you need an iPhone for that, so if you have an android phone it won’t work.

How to setup an iPad

  • Firstly, to set up an iPad, hold down the ON/OFF button for a few seconds which is located at the top of the iPad.
  • Secondly, you will see ‘Hello’ pop up on the screen. This means you have turned on the iPad.
  • Thirdly, press the home button (circle shaped button) or if you have one without a home button, swipe up instead.
  • Fourthly, follow the on screen instructions.

You can enable screen time

  1. Go to settings
  2. scroll to screen time
  3. enable it
  4. do whatever settings you like
  5. if you are afraid you son will change the settings in screen time you can add a passcode for it.

For more info you can go to this link for screen time.

note: you will need an Apple ID to have family sharing and a Apple device like an iPhone.
