M1 MacBook LCD Crack

Hello everyone! This is my first post on the Apple Community Forum. I want to try and gain as much insight as possible, as I believe there to be a growing issue with the latest M1 MacBooks that needs urgent highlighting. Recently, my MacBook Pro was sat on my laptop stand in my home office. It’s just me at home and the desk space is clear. I was working on some documents when I took a short break. When I returned, my display now had vertical and horizontal lines going through it. I gasped in shock because only a few minutes ago it was absolutely fine. I’d like to point out that the MacBook was not overheated (if you own an M1 Mac, you’ll know it’s near impossible to even get the fans spinning on this thing). It’s never left my home, and never been anywhere other than on my desk (so no opportunity to take a few bumps or knocks in a bag etc). I am also extremely careful with all things, particularly my tech. The outer body and glass screen is in perfect condition and so the crack in the LCD is completely unexplainable. I’ve taken the MacBook to my local Apple Store where a Specialist told me straight away it was a pressure crack and it won’t be covered under warranty and I should pay around £600 to repair it and that I should of purchased AppleCare+. If I could just pull out £600, I would but the thing is, it’s taken me 2 years as a student to save money to even purchase the MacBook. The Specialist then proceeded to repeatedly press his thumb on the display which made more vertical lines appear (this made me really unhappy) and possibly even make the crack worse. Admittedly, I should’ve purchased AC+, and it was on my radar, but I’d forgotten and before I knew it I was 21 days over the 60 day purchase period. However, something like this shouldn’t just happen randomly and the automatic response shouldn’t be “You should’ve purchased AC+“ — it almost feels to me that they just know their products are not as durable as they once were. Nonetheless, a couple of Google and Twitter searches and I’m now discovering a number of people with the same problem as me and yet Apple have stated they aren’t familiar with one single case. So please, if you have had this issue or know someone that has, please leave a reply!

The store is always going to assume it's a pressure crack because 99% of the time it is. Your next step is to contact Apple and talk to their customer relations and dispute that assertion indicating what you say happened. There have definitely been cases where no point of impact could be found and it was handled as a material defect under the warranty.

Buenas noches:

I have noticed that also with a MacBook I purchased in October 2020 ( 13inch MacBook Pro). I have the same issue you mentioned, however apple wants to charge $918.00 for the repair. I am not a first time MacBook owner ( this is my second laptop after having my first laptop for 9 years with no issues !). The support staff at the apple store will find a thousand and one reasons to blame the consumer, despite me explaining there is no point of impact for me to have caused this damage. And even if I were to pay for the ridiculous amount to fix the screen, who is to stay that it won't happen again? Sad really..I've never had an issue with Apple's quality quite like this, but I find it completely outrageous that this product could be so fragile as to be rendered completely useless after. I hope apple stands by their products and takes accountability. Its unethical to charge consumers thousands of dollars with products that are not durable !

I too am victim to this! I love my MacBook, its my third one, first one I used for over 9 years never a problem. My current book started with a horizontal line through the center with the upper half an appearance of being set back. Called apple support have an appointment Tuesday the 24th August at my local Apple. Closed my lid that night, next morning there were cracks in the screen on the center right side! I'm expecting an issue with this, as I'm sure they are going to say I caused it! There seem to be many with this issue. Purchased mine in April 2021. We shall see, I'm hoping it goes well, as does everyone else, BUT!!!!

Not really sure why you're chiming in on this issue unless you've gone through this yourself. The issue we are all experiencing is clearly not in the column of a tire print over the computer from being dropped in the street. When you have a brand new computer and you touch the screen and it cracks - THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW. It's pretty clear that everyone here that has posted are long time Mac users and what we have experienced is highly unusual. Additionally, please stop spreading misinformation as evidenced by my update, apple's 1 year warranty DID cover this issue.

Interesting whenever there is a common problem, same guy jumps out and defend apple. I have the same problem with my Macbook air screen. I was in shock when I saw the defect out of nowhere. Then I did some search online and find many people have the same problem.. pretty much like the butterfly keyboard case..I will see what they say in apple store tomorrow.

Commercial products, their warranties, and their extended warranties work in a predictable way.

Warrant-able implies, but does not guarantee, High Quality:

Commercial product makers build high quality products. You can tell because the manufacturer is willing to stand by their products and repair or replace them (but only for defects in materials or workmanship) at manufacturers expense for a stated warranty period.

I do not speak for Apple, Inc.

I do not work for Apple, Inc.

I do not receive any compensation from Apple for anything.

I bought my M1 MBP in November 2020 and I now have multicoloured vertical lines (1.5 inches thick) on the left side of my screen! There's also thin horizontal lines at the bottom that are flickering. Don't know how this has happened. It's been there for days now, and I've tried so many tips I've seen/read online. Nothing works.

I contacted Apple, and so far have set up to mail away. But I don't have AC+, just the limited warranty. Their turnaround time is 2-3 weeks, and they said it could cost me $920 if they find accidental damage! I've had Mac and MacBook in the past for over 20 years, never had this issue before! I did find a repair shop who can do it for $700, but that is still excessive.

Has anyone gone to get Apple to fix theirs screens? Was it covered by the limited warranty?
