sync calendar/contacts with iCloud versus iTunes

I use iTunes on a Windows 10 PC to sync my Outlook 365 Calendar and Contacts with my iPhone 8 calendar and contacts. Today I received the following message in iTunes: "Support for syncing contacts and calendars has been deprecated and will be removed in a future version of iTunes."

I think it is still syncing. My questions are as follows:

  1. Best option if I cannot use iTunes - Is it iCloud?
  2. If it is iCloud - will it duplicate all entries the first time I use iCloud to sync or does it recognize the two (iPhone calendar/contacts & PC based Outlook calendar/contacts) are already synced and just add/remove/change any differences? I have not used iCloud in past.

One last note: I sync both an iPhone and iPad Air with my Windows 10 PC.

Windows, Windows 10

Thanks for the data!

If I can ask: What is you computer's OS, and are you running the Microsoft store version of iTunes, or the "stand-alone"?

I've held back to 12.11.3.17 (from the MS store) and am at iOS 15.7 and all is OK ...

BUT I bought a new apple watch and must upgrade to iOS 16.x to get it to work ...

but don't want to open any cans of worms if I can avoid it..................

Thank you for that info. I’ve used iTunes for years and never looked around the menu structure beyond music things. I’m having some heartburn with Outlook synching with Outlook.com and iCloud on Win 11 now. Might be worthwhile to look at iTunes for this. However, was the jist of this thread that Apple wants to stop allowing ITunes to do this?

Thx DD

Per the link in tt2 / @turingtest2 append...

YES Apple has stated the intent to remove the direct sync functionality.

It's a vague threat at this point as no date/or future-version for removal has been specified.

I NEED the sync-direct feature as I sometimes travel for extended periods to places where the only clouds are the ones in the sky ... and the internet may be a "drive into town" away from where I'm staying...

Also ... I'm not keen on the privacy issues of putting all my stuff in the Apple cloud...

SO... anybody try a sync. with iOS V16.x yet?

We need a guinea pig....

ikp1 Tested it out and said it works. I would be inclined to believe it because the sync issue is related to the version of iTunes and not iOS. I have v12.12.5.8 (which is currently the latest version) and it does work. So I would imagine it would work with iOS16. He posted about it a few posts before this one.

Thanks tt2

I'll go ahead and upgrade to later version of non-365 Outlook.

The day USB sync. goes away will be very sad for me...

I spend part of the year in rural Central America where there are not reliable connections of even modest speeds,

not even getting in to some HIPPA stuff I have to deal with, cloud stuff is kind of a non-starter...

but I'll deal with that rodeo when it arrives ...

I appreciate your wisdom!

In order to use my new apple watch I upgraded to iOS 16.1 and am happy to report that my iPhone 13 pro still syncs OK.

I do watch Gordon's column on Forbes, and he is a real blessing to the iPhone community!

I upgraded after his initial thumbs-up to iOS 16.1, and have not personally noticed any of the problems that have come out since then with my configuration ...

Great news! I'm surprised syncing through iTunes 12.12.6.1 still works, as it was announced in various places that version 12.11.3.17 would be the last one to do the job.

Anyway, reading all the above, I decided to update from iOS 15 to 16 this morning. And everything works fine! My config:

  • iPhone 12 with iOS 16.1.1
  • iTunes 1.11.3.17
  • Outlook 2016
  • Sync through USB OK!

The message from thotnavy indicates that even though sync is currently working for existing iphones (that have already been setup for local outlook sync in the past), it does not seem to work for new iphones. That would prevent me from upgrading iphone at least as long as can be avoided. It would be useful to hear about more experiences with new iphone being setup for local syncing. Is it a generic issue, i.e. Apple has already dropped support for local outlook sync for new devices?

I tried to sync. this morning with the same obsolete version of iTunes: 12.11.3.17 I have been using.

I upgraded to iOS 16.1.1 and I beleive I sucessfully sync-ed once since then but can't be 100% sure

I was traveling...

This morning I tried to sync. and it hung syncing contacts.

after 5 min. or so I terminated iTunes and rebooted.

Outlook V2013 hung loading my profile.

I'd made a backup of my PST before the sync.

and that copy works fine ...

I am working today but will try to get more info. later this wkend.

@jimbob5941: Gordon Kelly will be providing his final verdict around 31-Jan on iOS 16.3. If it remains as currently stands, I will be upgrading and will continue to let everyone know.

That being said, do you all think that the original warning from Apple has more to do with Office 365?

I purchased Office 2019 to absolutely avoid moving to the subscription-based licensing model. And, with all that remains intact with the last of that MS Office kind of install, I wonder if anyone with such versions or older will not be affected by the change of which Apple warned, again, because it is intended around Office 365.

I bought a copy of Office 2021 Professional thru Stack Social for ~$40

I really half expected it would be a scam, but at that price, and after a little due-diligence I gave them the $40

The offer was legit, and I now have a perm. license for 2021.

It syncs fine with iOS 16.2

I am about to upgrade to iOS 16.3

I saw the Forbes bug about iCloud backups, but I don't use the iCloud so ... what the heck!
