Cannot select frames from Live Photo in Photos

iPhone 12 pro with ios 14.4.2

So I shoot a photo with Live Photo enabled. When I go to Photos, the resulting image looks and behaves just like I shot in Movie mode. If viewed in an album, there is a play button in the middle of the image just like a movie.

If I go into Edit mode, there's the same setup I'd expect for working with a video shot.

I cannot figure out how to select a specific frame to export or access other options. I was trying to make use of the Long Exposure option, which is supposedly accessed by hitting the Live Photo icon while in edit mode. I've read the button is either where the movie camera icon is in my sample photo, or in the upper left corner in portrait orientation. But I have a speaker icon, which is yellow for some reason too.

What am I missing here please???

Thanks!

You are pushing the button too long. Anything more than a quick press causes the phone to record a movie instead of a Live Photo.

If you come from a photography background and are appropriately trained to not stab at the shutter release button, you are going to end up making a lot of tiny movies. Holding down the button for more than, oh, 250 milliseconds, will create a movie, not a Live Photo.

Is there any way to change this behavior? Besides turning off Live Photo?

Not that I'm aware of. If you want to use Live Photo, just get used to stabbing at it like a chimp. Good thing is, it's Live Photo, so you can toss the blurry frames.

Still, this could be better...
