iTunes Track Names via Gracenote ERROR

I am receiving the following message when I try to get track names for imported CDs: 'An error occurred while accessing the Gracenote server. Gracenote Error: 0x0'.

I am running Windows 10 - I did try everything suggested (check Internet connection, turnoff VPN, updated iTunes, and added iTunes to my firewall allowed list).

Any suggestions? I have had no trouble in the past and nothing changed in my system.

I got mine working on Windows 10. This is what i did, though I doubt it will work for everyone:

I uninstalled Windows 10 store iTunes app.

I installed iTunes from here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210384

Then, I go to the iTunes app in the Windows 10 store. It says owned, not installed. This is because you have the .exe from the link installed, but you still own the app from when you had it previously installed.

When I click to install iTunes app from the Windows 10 store, it starts a launcher and says it would like to modify the current iTunes installation (the one from the link above). I let it do that. The install finished. I started it up, and I double checked my processes to enable the apple mobile device support to connect to network (just in case, though I usually keep it disabled to save performance and internet as mine is very slow; however, disabling it in the past has not affected Gracenote). Then I put a CD in and the Gracenote was working fine. Not sure why. But this continues to work for me, so I'll take it.

Glittery posted an observation to Reddit. I have the same observation as do several other people who have posted here with the problem. The Gracenote problem started after the Itunes update was implemented.

I was ripping a pile of CDs using Itunes. Several ripped fine with the album being identified and the track names being added properly the day BEFORE the Itunes update. I came back the next day, updated Itunes, and the Gracenote error has occurred since then. Of course this just may be a coincidence but I think not. Suggesting something is a post hoc fallacy is fine when there is no distinct causal relationship. In this case Itunes was updated, Itunes stopped working properly, seems like there could be a causal link there.

Windows media player is capable of ripping and obtaining album info and the music can then be moved into Itunes. Sometimes the artwork is lost in the process.

Hello 12Pearl,

It sounds like you are getting an error concerning Gracenote when attempting to import CDs to your computer using iTunes.

Do you have any security software on your computer that would potentially cause a conflict with contacting the server?

Are you able to test while connected to a different network?

Also, do you have access to any other computers? If so, do they exhibit the same error?

Those steps would help to further isolate this behavior to your computer specifically, as opposed to a networking conflict.

Take care.

If you play the disc in iTunes without first launching Windows Media Player before inserting the disc, the data does not come up in iTunes. In my case I want to encode the files in ALAC.

Over the past couple of days, between reboots, I have successfully been able to get the Gracenote data in iTunes but WIndows Media Player must be open prior to using iTunes to fetch the data and then encode.

Agreed, I loathe the day when music publishing is completely reduced to servers doleing out digital streams to client devices only but that is for another discussion.

I just went through the process of configuring Windows Media Player for the first time on this 9 year old machine (smile). It crashed when it went to access all of my ALAC encoded music but probably due to the size of my collection. Anyway...

I fired up iTunes after I got WMP going the second time and inserted a disc. There was some fidling, like reloading the CD Data from the iTunes preferences but I did then get the nag screen asking if I wanted to import the CD data. There were 3 entries for the disc I chose. Not a biggie. Just choose the best one and BOOM, it began the import into iTunes in ALAC format with the CD data in tow.

It wasn't a perfectly smooth experience but better than perpetually getting the "0x0" gracenote error. Attached is an obligatory screenshot of the obscure CD data import in progress.

I have the same issue on 2 laptops (windows 10) following the last iTunes update. It was also around 26 April 2021.

I contacted Apple support over their online chat service and was told it was a conflict in my Firewall/Anti Virus software. I use McAfee Total Protection. Apple weren’t very helpful and this felt like I was being fobbed off.

So I contacted McAfee and they remotely checked my software and came to the conclusion that it was nothing to do with their software.

I went back to Apple online chat and they booked me a Genius session at my local Apple store for the same day. I took my laptop up and he logged onto their internet and we got it working. He said that I needed to give my Laptop “permission” to contact the grace nite server. As far as I know he just connected to the following address:

https://service.gracenote.com.

But when I got home it all went back to gracenote error 0x0. Grrr! My mcafee says this address is an insecure web address and I can’t see how to allow access or fix it. Is it a Microsoft issue?

My hunch is that until they update iTunes we will all be stuck with a useless version of iTunes. This means I know have a useless iPhone and useless music software on my laptop. Is there another provider? Because, If they (Apple) can’t admit and apologise that they have done something unknowingly wrong, then shame on them and their customer service. It’s unusual but I’ll wait and see if anyone from Apple contacts me.

Hope this helps the rest of the community.

Why?

As annoying as the ongoing problem with Gracenote is, it surely only means that any new CD you try adding to your Library may encounter an issue. For everything you already have in your Library, the Gracenote information will have already been applied to that CD and Gracenote doesn't enter the picture at all. If it does, you're doing something wrong.

If you mean to add your CD sourced music to your phone - yes, I get that, but as previously stated, once Gracenote has found titles for a CD that you are currently adding to your Library, its job is done and Gracenote is no longer involved. So once again, annoying as the issue is, it only affects CDs that you're trying to add now. Your existing Library should not be affected. If it is, you're doing something wrong.

Any music that is already in your Library is not affected. Nor is music sourced in digital form (MP3s or from the iTunes Store) since it should already have all its titling within the digital file. If it hasn't, that has nothing to do with Gracenote.

We'll wait and see what happens but it seems to me that no senior technical person reviews this site or cares.

This is a user to user forum, so Apple's technical employees do not routinely review the posts here. That said, if there is a problem with iTunes' ability to access Gracenote, then hopefully, it will be resolved shortly.
