iPassword App not working on iOS 14.5

When will there be an update to the iPassword app for iOS 14.5? I'm unable to get to my passwords.

I too had this problem. I spent a day trying to recover my Ipassword data after the 14.5.1 update. Checked with Apple which was a dead end, surfed the internet for solutions and finally came up with one that worked for me. I downloaded the trial version of iMazing software which extracted the iPassword software/data which I was able to install on an old phone that I have.

I did have to go into my purchases in the App store with the old iphone 5 and download iPassword from there as it no longer shows up in the general app store list. Once I had iPassword on my iphone 5 iMazing populated the password data from the backup I made from my iphone XS. I downloaded the iMazing software from their website rather than on CNet or other aggregators of software online, seemed less sketchy to me, plus, there are tutorials on their website. . Anyway, the free version worked for me, I'm thinking of buying it just to support the company for saving me the headache of resetting all of those passwords.

Pretty unacceptable that an update would brick software that's so mission critical without warning. Maybe Apple could write into iOS updates a list of software that would become incompatible before the update is installed? Then users can make sure they have a backup of their data.

Here's what just worked for me. I borrowed an iphone that had IOS 12 (i.e. doesn't have 14.5) and erased all the content to factory settings. Logged in with my apple ID/password. When I tried to restore from an early icloud backup, it wanted me to update the software to 14.5/14.6 and i said NO!!! So I didn't do that. In that same section, I clicked on "Don't Transfer Apps & Data" (b/c when I tried to transfer apps & data via Icloud, it wanted to update the software which again is BAD!). Then, went to the App Store and clicked on my profile photo which is in the upper right hand corner. Clicked on Purchased, then My Purchases, then Not on this Iphone. Was able to re-install the ipassword app onto the phone. When I clicked on the ipassword app to open it, it asked me for a password as if I was a new user (had to enter it twice). I used my original password to login and still didn't see any of my entries. So then, within the app, I went to settings and there was an option to restore from Icloud. And like magic, poof, it populated with ALL of my entries. I am overwhelmed and so happy. Hope this helps.

Hey Guys

Here is a fix for those of you affected by the “iPassword app” issue after updating to IOS 14.5

I will begin by saying that this should work for 80% of those affected. First things here is a

List of what you will need:

1.) A backup of your device that had the password app prior to the IOS 14.5 upgrade which can be either iTunes or iCloud based

2.) Either an iPhone or iPad running IOS 14.4.2 (I will talk about this in the next step)

In step 1 before you say I never backed up (iTunes or iCloud) consider that the default for most devices

iPad or iPhone is to backup to iCloud so you may not even realize that you are backed up. You should be able

To click on Settings, Your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup and from there see your iCloud backups.

In step 2 above I say 14.4.2 but you may have jumped from an earlier version say iOS 13 but what you are looking

For is the backup previous to IOS 14.5. Here is what you may not realize that you can restore an iPhone backup to

an iPad or vice versa.

I will detail my steps and my situation and from there you can apply it to your situation. I have an iPhone running on

IOS 14.4.2…an automatic update to 14.5 and iPassword no longer works. My daughter has an iPad still running 14.4.2

1.) I backup her iPad via Itunes,

2.) I then erase her iPad and select restore this iPad from iCloud during setup.

3.) I use my Apple ID and password when asked to log in

4.) I am told not all settings will be restored as they are different devices…I agree

5.) Upon restore iPassword and all passwords are there

6.) In iPassword running on the iPad I select settings and select backup via Dropbox

7.) I create a dummy/Free Dropbox account

8.) I then select backup to Dropbox

9.) From a web browser on a laptop/computer (Chrome Safari etc) I login to my Dropbox account I created and download the iPassword backup file

10.) From my iPhone that is running IOS 14.5 I go to the App Store and download the free app called “Password Manager” Lock Apps Safe Vault …

very important you download that app as there are many that are similarly named!!!

11.) On my Dropbox account via laptop/desktop I delete the Directory that was created by iPassword in Step 8 above

12.) From my iPhone running IOS 14.5 I launch “Password Manager” (interface is the same as iPassword…same app different name) I click on

Settings and select Backup via Dropbox

13.) I again login to my Dropbox via a laptop/Desktop and delete the iPassword backup file….NOT THE DIRECTORY

14.) I upload the iPassword backup file I downloaded in Step 9 above to the New Directory

15.) On my iPhone I click on restore from Dropbox…and here is the trick….you need to do it twice!! So after the first restore ….

close the app and do it a second time

TADA you have your passwords in the exact same way they were presented in iPassword just in an app with a different name. Here is a gotcha to be

aware of, whatever device you use to restore your backup has to be running the same IOS that your backup was running at the time….in my case my

last backup of my iPhone via iCloud prior to IOS 14.5 was 14.4.2 so I needed a device (iPad or iPhone running IOS 14.4.2) your previous backup may

be different

My advice…copy out your passwords and start using a well known Password app and take this as a lesson learned…yes this is working but for how

Long??

My last step was to again wipe the iPad but restore via iTunes (see step 1 above) so I could return the iPad to my daughter exactly the way it was

When I borrowed it.

Here is the question I am sure some will ask..”What if I don’t have a device running the IOS version prior to the update in iCloud or iTunes?” Get one

Beg, borrow, steal….if the passwords are that critical… go on your local buy and sell and buy a cheap iPhone or iPad running the IOS version you

Need

If you have to borrow a friends iPad or iPhone I have shown you a way to back it up in advance so you can return it to them just the way it was when you

Borrowed it.

I realize this won’t help everyone but it should help out some!!!

Massive THANK YOU for the suggestion of iMazing.... Worked in my use case below.

iMazing did work without making a purchase....

  1. Found redundant iOS device that was pre 14.5 iOS
  2. Downloaded and installed iMazing to a MacBook (PC would also work)
  3. Backed up the no longer working iPad device containing iPassword to iMazing
  4. In iMazing copied the iPassword app to the MacBook hard drive (this will also take your data) (You will need to drill into Apps to see it)
  5. Connected the redundant iOD device (happened to be running old iOS 12.5.3 (last supported on this old iPad) to the MacBook via cable and opened iMazing.
  6. Followed a number of prompts in iMazing to deal with security and turning off find my device
  7. In iMazing selected the target redundant iPad and selected the Quick Transfer option . In the file browser navigated to the file extracted in step 4.
  8. Followed iMazing prompts - it will ask you to insert Apple ID credentials and other steps
  9. On redundant iPad opened iPassword inserted master password and all data there! PHEW.

I’ve had the same problem since iPhone XR updated to 14.6..... so a massive thanks to CPens and others for the assistance in helping me restore.

I followed the imazing.com route as previously mentioned in this thread. I also luckily had a iPad Pro that had version 14.4 on it which served to allow all of my iPassword data to be transferred safely and into the ‘old’ iPassword app that I had newly downloaded there through my ‘purchases’ on the App Store.

Finally I did a ‘Dropbox’ backup of all this data from the newly populated ‘old’ app on my iPad. I then went to App Store on my iPhone and downloaded the newer and free version called Password Manager ‘ (Gold border around a safe) by what appears the same developer. There is also a paid version (Pro) but I didn’t need this. Once downloaded, I then did a restore from ‘Dropbox’ using the file I had just backed up there. I had to follow the prompt on the Password Manager App and move the file to a different folder in ‘Dropbox’ before it allowed the restore, but then restored all 262 passwords to the new and free app on my iPhone = problem fixed and didn’t have to spend hours transferring all my data by hand. Hope this helps others!

I don't have an iPad or another phone that hasn't been updated so that was not a solution for me.

I downloaded Password Manager' (with an apostrophe). The icon is a safe. After I opened it, I went to Settings, and under Backup and Restore, I chose Restore from iCloud. My phone is backed up to iCloud automatically. To my shock, it worked. All my passwords are there in the same format. A little heads up and instructions from the company or Apple would have saved me a morning of angst.

Now my question is how do I backup my passwords in a format that is accessible to other password managers, should this company go out of business?

Jun 18, 2021 8:00 PM in response to robvawjr

You can get the passwords from the old version to the new version (the one called Password Manager with a gold border in the App Store) with a little skill.... first need to use the Backup Via WIFI from the old app under settings.

Then I had to copy this backup file to Dropbox in a folder called Apps/iPassword+/ipassword.date.backup

Then used the new app to RESTORE from Dropbox. It should suck in the file and ask you for a pin. THIS IS THE PIN used to backup the file in the old app!!! In case you have different pins to open the new and old versions of the app.

Hope this works for you!

I have found A solution. It will not work for everyone. It worked for me.

The part that is not for everyone is the first part.

*I found an old device that was not updated.*

I signed it out of the current user (my daughter’s old phone) and signed it into my wife’s account. She was the one who was using this abysmal app.

Once I signed in to her account, I went to the App Store and clicked on her avatar and went to the section labeled “Past Purchases” and found the old iPassword app and downloaded it.

Then I loaded the old version of iPassword Manager Vault.

Then I restored our purchases.

That took more than one try. (That will be a theme going forward.)

Once that “took” I went to the backup and restore section. BE VERY CAREFUL and do not ever BACKUP. You do not want to accidentally overwrite your saved backup.

Do a restore from the iCloud.

This took a couple of tries (OR it took longer than it should and maybe it was still working on it - whatever the cause, this appeared to work but did not populate the app with data immediately.) Eventually our data showed up.

At this point you can print or manually copy all of your data to a new, more reliable app. OR you can transfer the data to the new iPassword App.

To Transfer to your NEW iPassword App, do the following steps.

We opened the new iPassword App on my wife’s phone and went to the cloud to restore it.

There were TWO iCloud folders. One was the OLD iCloud folder that had the backup in it. The New iCloud backup folder was empty.

We turned on Dropbox in BOTH apps and opened the OLD iPassword app and did a backup to the Dropbox.

Now we had TWO IDENTICALLY named folders in Dropbox. One has a backup file in it and the other is empty.

Again, be careful. Using the Dropbox App, go to the iPassword folder with the backup file. COPY the file. Go to the iPassword folder that is empty and PASTE the backup file to that folder.

(Note, make sure you use the SAME PASSWORD for BOTH iPassword Apps)

Once you have the backup file in BOTH folders, open the NEW iPassword and restore from Dropbox. We got a success message but it did not work. I tried two more times and finally our data was in the new iPassword app.

AGAIN this may have been because it was just SLOW and the first time actually worked but took a while to show up, or it may have taken several attempts. I am not sure.

One thing that I do know is that I was my wife’s HERO last night! :-)

She had over 350 passwords stored and while she knew many of them, there were some pretty important passwords that she hasn’t used in a while that were recovered.

Best of luck to you!

You need an older iPad, or iPhone with an older iOS version...

I had to do this a couple of times (click on RESTORE PURCHASES) (That will be a theme going forward.)

Super easy fix to this issue. In the App Store is an app called Password Manager’. You’ll notice that the icon is the same as iPassword from a couple of years ago. See screen shot attached. Download that app and sign in. Upon opening, you will see that it is identical to the old iPassword that we’ve been locked out of. Go to the settings page and scroll down to the backup and restore section. Restore from iCloud. Voila! All your passwords from the old version of iPassword are populated into the new one.

When I tried this, it took about two seconds to restore, so I didn’t think it worked. So happy I’ve got my information back. Not that I trust this company at all, will probably be seeking another PW storage option.

Like most of you, I have years of data stored in this app and have been frustrated no longer having access to it. I do not have an older iPhone and could not try the popular solutions in this thread. The only thing I had was an old Dropbox backup file (from 2019) from the out-of-date app. Here is what worked for me to be able to restore the old Dropbox backup file to the more recent app “Password Manager”.

1) I downloaded the more recent app “Password Manager” and set the passcode the same as I had it on the older app (not sure this was necessary but why not)

2) I then connected the new app to Dropbox and that created a new Dropbox folder.

3) I copied the backup file from the old app’s Dropbox folder and put it in the new app’s Dropbox folder.

4) I went into the new app and tried to restore from Dropbox. This appeared to be successful but none of my data from the backup appeared in the app.

5) I closed the new app and re-launched it.

6) I tried to restore from Dropbox one more time and all my data from the old backup file was successfully restored.

I definitely lost all my data since my last backup but at least I don’t have to start completely from scratch. I hope this helps someone.

Taking a hint from your post, I bought iMazing, extracted the iPassword data from my iPhone, went to my iPad which I hadn’t updated yet, found the old iPassword in my app purchases, installed that on my iPad and loaded the backup to it from iMazing. After that, I downloaded the new version of iPassword on both my phone and iPad, backed up the old iPassword via iTunes file sharing, copied it to my computer hard drive, and then via iTunes file sharing restored the backup to the new iPassword on both devices. All my passwords are there. Hallelujah! As soon as I can, I am switching password managers and never using anything by this developer ever again. I’m also going to refrain from updating the iPad until I have done so. Thank you!

May 7, 2021 3:55 PM in response to AmyMZ

I didn't buy it and it worked for me, just select continue trial on the start up page. Plug in your phone that no longer works with iPassword, it will show in the iMazing browser then find apps and navigate to iPassword. Control click and select Extract App. Save that file to your desktop, it's your password data. You can also backup your phone using iMazing and get the files that way too without having your phone plugged in but then you have to wait for the backup.

Next step. Have your downgraded phone ready, I used an extra iphone 5. Go to the app store on your old phone. Find and select iPassword from your Purchased apps and download it. If it's already on your old phone skip this step. Plug in your old iphone to your computer. Navigate to your phone in iMazing then find iPassword in the IMazing browser, control click on iPassword and select Restore App. Navigate to the file you saved on your desktop and select it. Then follow the iMazing prompts. I recreated these directions for myself and it worked for me again. Good luck.

Had the same problem with the old version of iPassword when my iPad was updated to 14.5. Many thanks to CPens and Jocasta68 for their helpful posts. I had no problem with the trial version of iMazing extracting the data from iPassword on my iPad and getting the data into the old version of iPassword on an old iPad (ios 9). Created a backup of iPassword on the old iPad and used wi-fi to get the backup file onto my Mac. To get this backup file on to the ios 14.5 iPad with the new version of ipassword used the iPassword restore function using Dropbox . For some unknown reason the restore using wi-fi would not work and I did't want to use iCloud or email.

Again, thank you to those who showed the way forward.

May 19, 2021 1:20 PM in response to TammyHC

I was able to get my data back.. Tried a ton 3rd party apps, nothing works. iMazing didn't work; a bunch of others didn't work. Fortunately at some point in the past (probably before the update,) I did a backup to icloud so there was a copy of the data there. I bought my wife an ipad a few years ago; on that she never uses. I fired it up and it had iOS 12 on it. I logged into her ipad with my icloud account, went to the APP and re-downloaded the app from my previous purchases. Once I had the app on the iPad with iOS 12 I opened it then did a restore from iCloud. I did use iMazing to create a backup of the app data from my wife's ipad but I don't have an app that can read the .backup file it created. I'm now in the process of manually copying all the password I had stored in the app.
