Issues with resolution Apple TV 4K after TVOS update 14.5

Since I've ungrade my ATV to 14.5 I have had issues with the resolution. It won't appear now through my AV reciever. I've had to use it in another TV and changed it to 576p. I tried this in my reciever but when I try to change back my screen goes black. It was working perfectly before this update. Also the ATV is now stuck on 576p and when I try to change it to any other resolution it gives me an error and stays on 576p. What a nightmare.

I was running Apple TV 4k connected to Denon AVR and Sony A8H. I was having the same issue, running tvOS 14.5. Switched to 576p SD and then got stuck there. Unable to change to any other video resolution, even basic 1080 p60 SDR. Tried everything on the Apple TV; rebooted several times, reset video settings, removed AC power and HDMI cable for 20 seconds from back of Apple TV.

Finally solved the issue! Updated software to tvOS 14.6, tried to change video resolution but that did not work. However, when i engaged the “Enable Dolby Vision” button, it went into it usual 25 second test mode and i did get a 4k Dolby Vision signal. I clicked accept/continue button (the top choice - sorry can’t recall the exact word for “yes, i can see the Dolby Vision test screen”) and all was well. Apple TV 4k was back to normal, able to output all flavours of 1080p, 4k SDR and 4K HDR. Bottom line is the Enable Dolby Vision seems to have broken the logic loop and restore normal functions. (tvOS 14.6)

Oh really, ok so it's not just me then and indeed it is a bug if you have your ATV running through a reciever.

So after the 14.5 update did the pass through to your Marantz just stop working and you were getting a blank screen?

Then like me you decided to change the resolution in the ATV to see if it displays through your reciever and it didn't?

Then when you did choose another resolution it is stuck on it and the only way around it is a hard reset?

If the above is true then this is what I would propose first to do.

Join the beta channel, update to 14.6 beta 2 and see if it resolves the issue for both the reciever and the bug with the resolution.

If it doesn't then come out of the beta channel and it will Install 14.5 back in for you. Try again to see if you are still have issues with the pass through and resolution and then if so contact support,,explain about the issue, this forum and that you need it replaced.

Unfortunately it's the only way and when you do get a new one just don't update it.

Because many people now a days have gone away from recievers and just using soundbars which do not require pass through etc, this bug has not surfaced with Apple as of yet and to be honest, it could be week or months before they patch it.

It was working flawlessly on 14.4 so they have broken something.

Let me know how you get on?

The new 14.5.1 update is not for tvOS unfortunately so the bug remains. Only solution is to ring support and talk to them as I did. They won't entertain the issue with pass through on you reciever but they will with the bug the resolution change. They'll swap it out if it's still in warranty and I've been told not to upgrade until it's fixed. I should be getting my replacement today hopefully.

I have the same issue with 14.5. I ended up having to turn off color enhancements and set the 4K signal format to standard on my Onkyo Receiver. After those changes on the receiver I’m able to set Apple TV resolution to 60hz 4K Std. I cannot get HDR settings to work on Apple TV using signal match or setting to 4K HDR manually.

This was not an issue with tvOS 14.4. We shouldn’t have to dumb down our settings on our receivers to pass 4K signal. Please fix this Apple

I've got to go to an authorized apple service centre which is 10 mins from my home. They said that with the reciever bits a 3rd party device and nothing to do with them. However the changing of the resolution changing bug is something they said that would be liable for and will swap out. I'll keep you posted. It's definitely a bug in 14.5 aswell as passthrough non AV recievers.

I faced the same problem yesterday just done and issue had resolved by doing the factory reset.

I have tried so many things before choosing the factory reset

like checking the hdmi connection

doing soft reset

try to switch back to even lower resolution like 480p or even 720p but nothing even worked.

so here it goes I just crossed my mind and done with the factory reset

respectfully, i don’t think that is true. The whole point of Enable Dolby Vision is to test IF your TV will support Dolby Vision. This is why one has the 25 second test sequence. The Apple TV 4k does not know if your tv supports Dolby Vision or any other non-broadcast frame rate until it “tests” each resolution. The last thing you want any HDMI box to do is to output a signal you can’t see and can’t escape from. Everyone’s system is slightly different, i wish you luck with your fix.

(One other suggestion, if you have an AVR, try to bypass it and connect Apple TV directly to your TV or another TV. The HDMI connection through AVRs is a complication in the signal path and might hinder solutions. One you have the issue resolved you can always reconnect through the AVR)

The receiver will tell the Apple TV which resolutions it supports; the Apple TV will then only offer you the resolutions the receiver has told it are available. If the issue were happening with a new installation, I'd be looking at a problem with the receiver or cabling. Since the issue occurred after an update, it's more likely to be the update that is the problem.

However, this doesn't necessarily mean an issue with the update, but possibly that the update process went wrong. Did you ever try a restore?

In my case, I used to be using 720P (well...my TV is a really old one) and having Dolby ATMOS passing through my receiver flawlessly with TVOS 14.4.

I remember that my ATV was kind of working at 720P momentarily (say for a couple of days after the update). When I turned on the ATV the other day, however, it prompted me to accept changing to a screen setting that would better fit my location. Unfortunately, I chose to accept the suggestion. The issue then appeared and I was starting to have the "blank screen" issue.

I then managed to use the shortcut "hold Menu and Volume Down for 5 seconds, then release" so that the ATV would switch to a new resolution every 20 seconds allowing me to choose a working resolution which is 576P for now.

Thank you for your suggestions about joining the beta programme, but I would probably wait for a little while and see if the issues could be resolved with a newer release of the OS...
