External storage size on iPad , HOW ???

Well, I'm pretty shocked at how difficult it is to perform a VERY simple thing on my iPad.

I just want to know how large is the folder that I'm trying to move to external drive.

And what is the current storage utilization on the external drive.

WITHOUT paying an extra penny PLEASE !!!

Whilst iOS/iPadOS will show individual file sizes, the OS does not natively expose folder sizes. Contributors here have no knowledge of Apple’s feature or coding design decisions - and cannot provide authoritative comment on Apple’s reasoning behind those decisions.

That said, just because native tools do not provide the functionality that you seek, there is a rich ecosystem of third-party Apps that extend natively exposed OS functionality. Whilst this may require purchase of a third-party App, most are not overly expensive for the additional functionality that they add to the system.

Whilst freely acknowledging your desire to find additional functionality for no cost, you are going to have to use a third-party File Manager App. You’ll find many in the App Store - but a few have good reputation and following.

File Browser - Document Manager (recommended for your stated needs):

FE File Explorer: File Manager:

Both of the above have the equivalent “Pro” versions. If considering either, you’d be well advised to check which version is more suitable for your needs before purchasing.

Returning to native functionality, Apple do invite constructive feedback and feature requests via their product feedback pages:

I hope this information and insight proves to be helpful in resolving your immediate issue.

Are you cycling files through iCloud, and then onto an external drive? And iCloud costs $$? Well, that’s part of how Apple Services have driven record profitability of the last months and years.

its also not free, at least not in the long term, but managing files between iPad and Mac is really made easier by the Mac app iMazing. I’m not shilling - I’m just a satisfied user.

I don't have my mac at the moment, I only have my iPhone and my iPad.

Trying to move folders from my NAS to the external drive.

I can move them, it's not an issue.

But I want to know, either the size of each folder in order to estimate the size, or check the external drive utilization after moving X folders and estimate accordingly.

"AMAZING", I'm literally wishing for at least 1 of the above essential functionality on every OS in the world, except Apple's.

External storage size on iPad , HOW ???
