Apple TV 4K 2021 shows only HD video from all apps instead of 4K or UHD

I bought the most recent Apple TV 4K 2021 but to my disappointment, when I plugged it in all my video content from apps like amazon prime and Netflix is showing only in HD. Note that I also have the 2017 4K apple TV and when I plug it to the same HDMI port, it displays in 4K as expected on my TV.

I verified that the 2017 apple TV with the same HDMI cable/port and video settings shows 4K but somehow the new 2021 apple TV 4K displays video only in HD.

Literally, nothing is changed in terms of TV hardware, software, cables, ios video settings, just the apple TV hardware from 2021 which has a bug where it can play video only in HD though it is advertised as 4K hardware. See the pictures attached below so you know exactly what I am talking about.

How can I enable 4K on the new 2021 Apple TV? If not, I guess I just have to return the device.

I have been dealing with this issue since Monday. I swapped in the new AppleTV 4K on my LG OLED for the previous gen on Friday, but I didn't notice the issue right away because I only watched AppleTV+, iTunes purchased content and Disney+ until Monday. Monday evening I went to watch the last episode of "Jupiter's Legacy" on Netflix and one screen had some pretty obscure dialog. I went to turn on the subtitles via the pull down menu so that I could play with the new "circular scrubbing" by rewinding and I saw that there was just an HD badge in the info pane instead of the Dolby Vision badge I was expecting.

Since then I have played with all of the settings on the AppleTV to get this "fixed" but with no positive results. I finally started testing a theory that the AppleTV is actually playing the 4K stream, just the badge isn't right because the stream still looked good to me and because the TV flashes up either the Dolby Vision or HDR label when the stream starts from Netflix or Prime even though the info pulldown only shows HD and no mention of HDR or DV. Because the AppleTV upscales to 4K, my TV always reports 4K even if it is a title that is only available in 1080p. So I switched the max resolution on the AppleTV to 1080p and when I did that the TV of course only reports 1080p, but the Netfilx app shows only an HD badge on the title page of a 4K title. When I switch the max resolution back to 4K the 4K label (or the Dolby Vision label) returns on the title page. In both cases the info pull down in the player only displays the HD badge even though the played stream looks much better with the max resolution set to 4K. This of course could be because the AppleTV is no longer upscaling, so I tried to think of some other test.

Then I had the idea of playing "The Expanse" and checking the TV info, because it is oddly enough filmed with HDR not Dolby Vision. The TV will report the HDR profile for HDR, HDR10, and HDR10+ content. The TV reports that, even though the pull down info in the Prime app only displays HD, the stream is playing HDR with the bt.2020 profile. This HDR profile is only applied to 4K or 8K streams. This makes me think that the Prime stream is actually 4K. Additionally, YouTube reports over its completely different info function that it is playing a 4K stream.

I have a theory (a bit of a stretch perhaps) that this is just a labeling problem in the info pull down with apps that still use the "old" video API on the AppleTV. The video player or API set has been updated to work in the new "circular scrubbing" gesture with the new AppleTV. Netflix and Prime can use this new gesture, but they still use the old info pull down and so are somehow affected by this bug (partial use of the latest API set). The AppleTV player uses a new API set that has the info displayed at the bottom of the screen by pressing the back button. This player (AppleTV+ or purchased content) does not seem to be affected by the bug. YouTube and Disney+ appear unaffected by this bug, but both use a completely different proprietary player that does not behave at all like the AppleTV+ player and also does not yet support the circular scrubbing.

Hopefully this is indeed just a software issue. Whether it be with Apple or some of the various streamers that need to update their apps to correct this issue. Those affected will have to wait on more info from Apple (perhaps a software update) or an App update from affected streamers.

Congratulations you’ve got your 4K label back. Too bad, as many people and I have already said on here, it was always playing 4K natively anyway and it was just that badge that was wrong. I don’t know why people continue to ignore that fact, and act like the label is so very important. But glad it will be fixed soon with 14.7 so they can calm down.

If you read through this whole thread, it's quite clear that wasn't always the case since the release of the 4kv2 box. The Netflix support chat alone proves that Netflix was misidentifying the 4kv2 box as an HD box. It's likely that Netflix has fixed their own app in the last 2 weeks, as well as likely that Apple has fixes in store for their next update.

You can go ahead and believe it was perfect since launch, but the evidence strongly contradicts that belief.

Try reading @mbenz1962 support thread again. The Netflix app thought it was running on an HD Apple Tv. Now, that's either a support person who can't read, a bug in the Netflix app reporting home that it was an HD Apple Tv, the Apple Tv itself reporting to the Netflix app that it was an HD Apple Tv, or some combination of the three.

You very well may have experienced differently. You may have had a different revision of the Netflix app on your Tv. There's a lot of variables here, and unless you're an apple software dev, or a netflix software dev working on the Apple TV code, it's unlikely you have a solid enough understanding of what really went off here to be credible any further on this topic.

Have a lovely day.

I think some people just want to troll around and pretend they know everything.

I never had the labeling issue (Netflix UI was always showing 4k) but when my AV receiver shows that it is receiving 1080p as input, it is what it is, regardless of the label or what someone on a forum says.

Someone somewhere must have fixed something because now on the latest beta my receiver shows 4K as the input video stream. Either Apple or Netflix must have fixed something on their end.

Now, the device still shows as Apple TV (without 4K) in my Apple ID account. Not a huge deal, but still a tiny bit annoying.

I’ve read it, and clearly that support person was just going off the fact that the new Apple TV is simply labeled Apple TV now and not Apple TV 4K on the back end and on your device list. They clearly did no looking into the problem. This post is from 6 days after the Apple TV was released. It clearly shows Netflix streaming at native 4K despite what the bade says. Many others confirmed it as well with the developer menu. But you continue to deny the facts. Not really important anyway, the badge will soon be fixed. Have a great day.

Your AV receiver and or TV should always show a 4K input from a 4K Apple TV, unless you manually switch it in settings, because the Apple TV always upscales everything to 4K regardless of the native stream it is receiving, that was the main reason why most people could not actually tell if it was a labeling issue or actually streaming HD. 🤷🏼‍♂️ So if your receiver is getting a 1080p signal from the 4K Apple TV you’ve got bigger problems.

Oy, with these responses ...

(1) Very glad this seems to be fixed in TVOS 14.7 beta 2 per all teh users' reports. This is the most important thing.

(2) Not all users have this issue.

(3) The users that do have this issue know that this is NOT a Netflix issue. We know this because the new ATV4K (v2) is not showing a 4K label on ANY app at all while playing the video - except for the ATV+ app, and when playing a Youtube 4K video. Every other app exhibits the same behavior. Netflix shows "HD" while playing a 4K show. Hulu does, HBOMAX does, etc, etc, etc. It's illogical to think it's anything other than some software issue in the ATV4K v2, which now appears to be fixed with the latest beta OS release.

just to add that I bought an AppleTV 4 K (2021) yesterday and I’m having the same issue of wrongly labelled Amazon Prime UHD videos, but I would just add that I have the latest software mentioned by others above, and it HASNT fixed the issue - the videos are still labelled as “HD”.

I can confirm they are streaming UHD/4K as I watched the same UHD film of the LG SmartTV Amazon app as the AppleTV Amazon app; and I looked at the streaming bandwidth pulled down from my ISP and the AppleTV app was pulling an average of 10 Mb/s (peaking at 19.2 Mb/s), whereas the SmartTV Amazon app only managed about 5 Mb/s (peaking at 7 Mb/s).

ive seen higher on UHD/4K streaming but that clearly depends on the compression used when the film was digitised.

watching an Apple TV+ show tonight I find that the Info drop down tab is missing altogether!

What is your deal? First you marked this situation Solved from your own false answer. You keep telling everyone to return it, which is not necessary. It has been proven that this is only a labeling issue from the developer menu showing what Native Resolution is being streamed and the bit rate it is streaming. Then when people tell you and show you that it has been fixed in 14.7, you call them liars. Have you used 14.7?
