AirPods Max won't charge in Smart Case

Not sure what firmware level my AirPods Max came with, but they're now at 3C39.

Anyway, used to be I'd have the AirPods Max in the Smart Case and I'd plug in the lightning cable and I could see the charge status by tapping the noise cancelation button (amber or green).

Now when the AirPods Max are in the Smart Case, it doesn't seem to charge - and tapping the noise cancellation button has no effect.

When the AirPods Max are out of the Smart Case all seems normal.

Anyone know what's going on here?

Never mind ... turned out to be a defective port on the CalDigit TS3+.

Connecting the lightning cable to the USB port on my power strip had it charging again fine.
