I'm not sure why my Messages won't spell check anymore.... it will underline mis-spelled words with the red squiggle, but when I right click to change to the suggested word, it never offers up the alternate spelling... just gives me normal right-click options. (Please see screenshot)
Any ideas what's going on?

You might have it disabled in settings. Go to System Preferences, go to Keyboard, then click Text and click Correct spelling automatically.

Thanks! This box was checked... but unchecking it and rechecking it seems to have solved it!
I have exactly the opposite problem: I have spell check turned off, and Messages is spell-checking my messages. Maybe the solution suggested here will work for me: turn it on and then off. MacOS Catalina.
