You cannot.
Click on this link to find out 'How to reset your AirTag' --> https://support.apple.com/HT212251
"An AirTag can be associated with one Apple ID. If you want to use an AirTag that someone else has used, they need to remove the AirTag from their Apple ID first. If the previous user removed the AirTag from their Apple ID but they were out of Bluetooth range of the AirTag, then you need to reset it before you can use it with your devices."
No - it is not a case of 'you cannot'.
It is a case of 'We will not!'. Please purcha$e and use 2+ seperate airtags on each item if you want to share their location.
Profit > Usability
Never will happen according to the Thor trolls!
I’ll never buy another AirTag… because you can’t share.
I’ve already replaced my tags with 3rd party
I love the new AirTag, but it really needs to include family sharing just like devices. It would be helpful for my wife and I to be able to use our iphones to locate a child's backpack or similar item. It would also be wonderful if Apple would build this into AppleTV remotes.

nmaximus ~ So tell Apple that here:

I am really sad that I cannot share my dog’s airtag location with my whole family! We have a shared Apple Music family plan and it would be amazing if we could all see his location too for peace of mind. It’s really a missed opportunity on Apple’s end that only one person can see a tag’s location. Any idea how I can fix this?

Although Apple administers this community, that doesn't include reading each of thousands of daily posts for possible feedback. However, Apple will "read all feedback carefully" here:

Sadly logging into my wife's iCloud account doesn't reveal the items list, so you can't see the airtags, this would be at least the first step Apple? However its probably not workable if you have to use the MFA each time to access the tags as the whole point is she's family so you shouldn't need to get her to authorise it first, what if she's busy or you are trying to find her and she's lost and not with her phone, thats the whole point right?!

Airtags are NOT reflected in a user’s AppleID …
… they are reflected in their FindMy app (on their own trusted devices) under “Devices. “
As far as your 2FA comments, since they are in FindMy - vice AppleID - no 2FA is required to view their location.
Hope this helps w/ your understanding.
Re: “… OR is this just a scenario that never came up …”
A fair question.
I have no “insider” knowledge on this matter - nor do I possess a crystal ball - but I’m confident that it DID come up in the design process.
However I also suspect that implementing the more advanced “features” necessarily took a back-seat to the sheer complexities of simply making the bluetooth based “relaying” system work at all, reliably -- with solid privacy / anonymity - for the SINGLE registrant in the “sea” of hundreds of millions of devices.
Given the obvious demand and feedback, I’m confident that the next version of “AirTag Finding” is on the drawing boards.
Again, this is just one person’s thoughts …

So true and so annoying that this is not made very clear from the beginning. I simply expected that family sharing is activated on these. That's why we got them from Apple, because things just work. Well, not this time!
They work exactly the way Apple intended them to work. Unfortunately, you have other needs. You can return them and buy something that better meets your needs. Or, you can hold on to them, use the features that work now. Apple may or may not add the features you would like to see at some time in the future.
So… Anybody in my Apple family can ding each other’s devices, but only I can find the Airtag. In which world does that make sense?
completely defeat the purpose of my purchase. And it makes no sense at all.
I sent a feature request for the AirTags. https://www.apple.com/feedback/airtag/
Seems like there are hundreds of users with the same issue so please, please send a feature request as well! Then maybe we will have the chance to enable family sharing. It just takes two minutes.
What a big missed opportunity and disappointment, we are using this with all my family and evidently this is used for many shared family stuff that gets easily misplaced. It is great that we can find each other’s devices because we leave them all around the house, how Apple didn’t see this feature was critical for AirTag? Must have been a technical issue/challenge, I cannot see other way to miss such an obvious key feature for something like this.

I agree that we should be able to share airtag with family members. Apple please add this feature.
For probably the dozenth time in this thread, Apple doesn't read here for feedback. Use the link it the post immediately above yours to submit feedback where Apple will read it.
