You cannot.

Click on this link to find out 'How to reset your AirTag' --> https://support.apple.com/HT212251

"An AirTag can be associated with one Apple ID. If you want to use an AirTag that someone else has used, they need to remove the AirTag from their Apple ID first. If the previous user removed the AirTag from their Apple ID but they were out of Bluetooth range of the AirTag, then you need to reset it before you can use it with your devices."

Adding my voice to the chorus. Yes, this is a real problem, not just a "nice to have". Not only can my wife not independantly find my keys if I am not around, but when uses the car she gets alerts that she is being followed. Yes, I know you can mute the alerts, but the user experience on these is severely diminished because of this. Clearly, this was spec'ed and tested by single people.

I really like the way it allows me to find my stuff, but I have decided to keep my Tiles on the keychain also in case she needs them. If apple hasn't fixed this by the time the one of them runs out of batteries, I am ditching the Airtags and going back to Tile.

While I agree sharing is desirable in an actual search situation it doesn't really matter how many devices you have that can access your Find My Items screen, one is enough. It isn't a question of getting your devices into Bluetooth range, every Apple device that has Find My active has the potential to see an AirTag and update its location. When that update happens it is visible to your account.

Problem is, Apple doesn't listen to us here and all we get is a link where our feedback is received and who knows what happens with it as nobody will respond to our feedback there either. I can see people addressing the AirTag not being able to be shared every single day. It is time that Apple responds to us customers and gives US feedback and tells us what they plan to do about this.

Unacceptable that you cannot share. My wife has her airtag key fob on her key, I have one on my wallet. When we're driving together she gets the alerts that an "airtag is travelling with you". Annoying, had I known of this limitation, I wouldn't have purchased them.

I'm still within the Amazon 30 return window, I just might and go back to Tile.

This is certainly one of the more entertaining hypotheticals.

But sticking to the facts ... without your phone being present and online:

The AirTag will intermittently "beep" while it's being moved ...

... and would also show-up as "Unrecognized Air Tag Traveling with You" on the kidnapper's iPhones.

And if the kidnappers don't have iPhones or other "cooperating" Apple devices ... the AirTag can't be tracked at all.

AirTags are to find "stuff" you misplace ...

... they are NOT intended or even designed to track individuals and should NEVER be used for any sort of "life safety" monitoring,.

A tag can’t report itself to the wireless network.

In fact a tag hasn’t a clue as to where it is.

There must be a relaying device (e.g. iPhone) in fairly close proximity to detect the tag, determine it’s own position, and relay both to Apple.

I only hope that your dogs don’t become neurotic from the incessant tag beeping when your own devices are not nearby.
