openoffice.app 4.1.10 unsigned file

I am using EtreCheck 6.4.4 ( the latest) . Started my computer up, tried opening mail- as soon as mail opened, it crashed twice; restarted- same event; sent report, ran EC.

Report shows everything is excellent, except openoffice.app is unsigned.

How do I determine if it is adware. Never had a problem using the app, but-----

Thank you for any insight you may have... just tried opening mail, and it failed, again. This information is not the computer, but the OS Big Sur....

OpenOffice is a legitimate app as long as your acquired it directly from the developer's official links. OpenOffice is free open source software and likely is not signed & certified by Apple as that requires the developer having a license certificate from Apple submitting the app to Apple so the app can be notarized so that Gatekeeper will allow the app to be run without manual intervention.

While OpenOffice is legit most users have migrated to LibreOffice instead which was forked from OpenOffice years ago once the open source license was changed. LibreOffice has seen a lot more updates & improvements since that time as well as no longer requiring Java for most of the components.

If you are having crashes, then post the EtreCheck report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper. Perhaps a contributor will notice something that may contribute to the crashes.
