A loud "Beep" sound for Lossless Music

When I open the music app for the first time after switching on the Mac, there will be a loud "Beep" sound suddenly. This always occurs when I am playing lossless music. Is it a bug or something else? Thank you.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.4

Hi Barberlives123,

I have the same problem.

I restarted my Mac many times but there's not differences. I use the internal speaker of the Mac and the AirPods Pro but the Beep noise is still there. I don't download music I only listen in streaming.

The beep noise occur when I play a lossless song jumping from another song (lossless or not doesent matter), sometime even I restart the same lossless song.

Many thanks

Gian

This is insane. The bleep is so f***ing loud. I can't listen to lossless music without being scared of that bleep coming on.

Dev teams, please get on this quickly. It's a bug that can actually hurt users/cause pain!

Edit: For Spec details, I am streaming music from my 2019 Intel MacBook Pro. This issue does not arise on the iPhone. Let's hope it stays that way.

Tried again. This time they suggested an SNC reset and it seems to have done something so I'll have to wait and see if the solution holds up this time.

I do hate intermittent faults.

SMC reset went like this

1 shut down Mac

2 on the built-in keyboard press and hold your Mac may turn on - mine did

Control on the left side of the keyboard

Option on the left side of the keyboard

Shift on the right side of the keyboard

Keep holding all 3 keys for 7 seconds then press and hold the power button as well if your Mac is on it will turn off as you hold the keys

Keep holding all four keys for 7 seconds then release them.

Wait a few seconds then press power on and log on.

Like I said it's working for now even when I put the Mac to sleep and logged off music and back on again. I don't have any downloads so I can't say anything about that.

This applies to M1 MacBooks only

The support article is for Intel Macs

I also have this issue. On a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017), listening with wired headphones (AIAIA TMA-2). It happened the very first time I downloaded a song after turning on lossless 24bit/48khz for downloads only, it was also the first restart after updating to Big Sur 11.4.

The beep was very loud and hurt my ears. It also happened a couple of times right at the start after replaying the song, but by that time I had taken my headphones off 😅. I've now turned off lossless option until its fixed so I can listen without the anxiety of getting attacked by my headphones at random, shame, the song sounded great after that first blip.

It must be something Apple can fix with an update, hopefully soon. You can't expect everyone to reset their NVRAM and SMC to fix it.

I did everything Apple Support suggested including resetting SMC and the issue is still there. It seems pretty random as to what songs are affected but it’s in lossless and spatial audio. I don’t mind losing lossless since my AirPods don’t support it but I do want spatial audio to work. I’ve left feedback on the Apple website but meanwhile I think we have to use iPhone for lossless.

I've noticed a number of users mentioning "lossless" audio. I don't believe that is the issue. I believe it is when a playlist goes from a non-Dolby Atmos song to a Dolby Atmos remaster.

The sound is deafening and has eliminated my desire to listen to this "new" way of enjoying music.

To turn off Dolby Atmos, go to preferences>playback> and select "off" from the dropdown for Dolby Atmos.

Found another issue using lossless on mobile. Some tracks will fail part way through, maybe due to cell signal connection issue and a terrible digital error sound will blast and it will skip to another track.

I've never had this problem with FLACS or flacs converted to M4A played in the music or old itunes app. ALAC needs some help quick!

OMG what is going on Apple! I just plugged in my headphone to play a song @ about a 1/4 of the sound on Apple Music and half the sound overall on the headphones going out. When I pressed play a loud "UMP!" frequency sound hit my eardrums like a snare drum! UNACCEPTABLE. I dont think this is due some NVRAM either. Test before you release this stuff please! This is going to rupture someones eardrums!
