Am I reading documents here correctly to say that I cannot use a 2009-era iMac as an external monitor for my M1 chip MacBook Pro? The iMac is in perfect condition.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

That is correct.

The 2009 iMac cannot be used as a monitor with the M1 MacBook Pro.

That's correct. Target Display Mode was deprecated after macOS High Sierra and new Macs can not use an iMac that still supports TDM as a monitor.
