See if anything in the support documents helps bring resolution. If the documents do not help and it is recommended you send you device in for repair, you may wish to wait until there is another iOS update for your device to see if that resolves the issue before sending your device to Apple. You can use your device by entering a passcode instead

I'm not sure what the cause of the problem could be (the iOS update may be coincidental with a hardware failure) but I would try to turn Face ID off, restart the iPhone and set up Face ID again.

Apple just released iOS14.7.1. You may all want to see if it fixes the issue (even though they do not mention a fix for Face ID, just for Touch ID.)

okay, I’m going on a limb here: could you try to gently clean the “notch”? I doubt it would make a difference but one never knows.

I’m afraid you may have a hardware issue. Please contact Apple Support (Get Support) or bring your device to an Apple store or an Apple authorized service provider.

The dot projector got remapped as part of the update. Because Of this many have been failing, though it is a safety feature to an extent. The dot projector is part of your Face ID sensor array and scans your face using lasers, to make sure no damage is being done it measures how much of this is being reflected back and can make a judgement based on this. If the laser intensity is too high it will ‘fuse’ the dot projector as a safety measure.

BTW: I have the same issue/failure after update my IP 11pro max to 14.7. I did it all: reset Face ID, cleand all sensors, even set the phone back to factory. After all reached out to apple support, they did a hardware diagnostic - result: All perfectly fine.
