Apple TV audio/video sync issues

Lately I’ve been having difficulty with lagging audio to video syncing with my Apple TV 4K. If I restart it, the problem is temporarily fixed, but after about 5 minutes of watching Netflix or hbo now, the audio will start lagging. This doesn’t typically occur with Disney plus or streaming movies from iTunes. Once the audio starts to lag with the service, it continues to lag once I exit the app. The sounds you hear when hovering over different apps lags significantly. Again, this is only fixed by resetting the Apple TV. I have run Netflix through my (smart) TV and had no problems with audio (it’s the same TV I have the Apple TV connected to). I’ve also ensured my internet connection/speed is good (>300Mbs), and have tried connecting my Apple TV to my router via Ethernet cable, with no improvement. This problem has been present for months but has gotten significantly worse recently. Changing between audio formats doesn’t do anything (a suggestion I saw when researching the topic). Please help.

I just updated my Apple TV 4K and this same thing started happening to me today. Watched two Netfix movies last night with no issues, but tonight the sound streams to my airplay Bose speakers ahead of the video. Also, my picture is slightly glitchy. When I change to TV speaker (which runs through HDMI cable) sound is perfectly synced with video and no more glitch. Again, this was NOT an issue until my Apple TV updated. This doesn't look like a fluke. It looks like a BAD UPGRADE. PLEASE FIX ASAP!

Agreed!- Roku or Fire?

Very disappointed with my new Macbook Air (2020 - intel chip) also. Got 16gb and highest rated processor and it under-performs my old 2012 Macbook Air. My old Apple TV was much more reliable also.

How are System76/Ubuntu laptops performing these days? I may even jump back over to a Windows system. Heck, I can buy a Windows laptop and a tablet PC for the price of my Air...Hmmm

Sorry to see this. I really liked my 6 other Apple computers. I guess all good things come to an end.

I have the exact same issue today is October 10, 2021. It’s been like this for about two weeks. I don’t even like watching it. If this keeps happening I’m going to switch to a more reliable device. I hope apple does something soon. I’ve never had issues like this before two weeks ago. I’m glad my tv has most of the same apps I use on Apple TV. Although some are not available. I hope a fix is found.

My Problem Solved

This turned out to be my Sony AV receiver (Sony STRDH590 purchased May 2021). When I went directly from AppleTV to my Sony TV the AV synch was resolved. Going through the Sony receiver AV synch was off by about 7-seconds with the video lagging behind the audio and video would jitter. Worked with 2 levels of Sony engineers checking everything, cables, settings, updates, different ports and factory resets and nothing resolved the issue. Their solution was to bypass the receiver for video(!) and said it was a product limitation, swapping it out would not fix the problem. Working now to return the Sony receiver even though its this late. The exact setup in another room through my Marantz has no issues. Back to Marantz on this install too. Last Sony receiver I will buy. Good luck everyone.

I have the same problem. Sound out of sync to an AirPlay 1 speaker but not to an AirPlay 2 speaker. Another annoying thing with tvOS 15.0 is not being able to select an AirPlay speaker as the default speaker. It can only be selected as an additional temporary speaker and the selection doesn't persist. Pretty annoying to have to manually first deselect the crappy built in speakers in my projector (that the Apple TV now always selects as default speakers) and then select my AirPlay speaker as a temporary speaker. Please tell the development team that some users don't have a TV set or an HDMI enables amplifier close to their display. A projector is often like that, it sits up in the ceiling and the sound has to go somewhere else. Not through the HDMI cable (its already hooked up to the projector). Please don't tell me to route it through a HDMI enabled amplifier because my house has an open floor plan and it would require another 20 meter HDMI cables. That's why AirPlay was so good until it got totally broken in tvOS 15.0.

So I’ve had geek squad over and we’ve figured out what’s going on. When using Airplay to my receiver, the audio appears to initially be fine but within a few seconds the audio and video are out of sync. The audio is playing before the video with an increasing time delay of the video over time.

When using AirPlay through my AirPods or Sonos speakers there is no delay. The delay only exists when I connect through my Bluetooth into my receiver.

I contacted geek squad because I initially thought this was a receiver issue, even though we had no interference with the receiver and no reason for it to suddenly delay. It wasn’t the receiver.

Here is the issue, when using the Bluetooth to my receiver, the video coming from the Apple TV ( which has a direct hdmi connection to the tv) has intermittent micro pausing of the video stream which causes the video to slowly delay behind the audio. It’s clearly an Apple TV issue and an update bug fix is required. I have performed all necessary steps to fix the Apple TV ( reset, audio sync, etc), but none worked.

I live 10 minutes from the spaceship, so if any of the engineers wants to come over and check it out, come over! Seems like an easy fix….

thanks

I've experience this issue also, since a recent update. In my case, I was running the audio through a Yamaha receiver, via Airplay. After reading these comments, I tried connecting to the receiver via Bluetooth rather than Airplay (Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth). This seems to fix the problem. So I suspect the issue is related specifically to Airplay on the AppleTV? But who knows, you can't reproduce every situation, with every piece of hardware and 3rd party software...

15.1 has not fixed the problem for me.

I have an Apple TV 4K and two HomePod Mini's in stereo set-up.

I have reset the Apple TV, reset the HomePod Mini's and used the Wireless Audio Sync tool across all channels and formats— but nothing works and the audio is still out of sync on Netflix and Apple+ etc.
