Hello samsing2,

That’s a great question, and you’ve come to the right place for help! SMS and MMS would be messages that are sent through your carrier. For example, if you were to message an individual using an Android device that message would be sent as an SMS text message. If you disable those features you wouldn’t be able to send SMS text messages or MMS picture/video messages to none iPhone users. Keeping those settings turn on however is your personal preference.
