On macOS, the volume control is disabled for digital audio outputs, such as HDMI or S/PDIF. This is to deliver optimal quality bit-perfect audio.

Generally, the only solution is to use the volume control on your TV / AVR / speakers.

I'm connecting my Mac Air book to a LG smart TV and have the Apple USB C - HDMI adapter. Is there no way Apple has at the present moment to control volume ?

As stated, if the app you are using to view or listen to audio on the display has a volume control, that is the only way the Mac can control it. The volume cannot be controlled via any macOS system controls. That is the way it has always been.

Dear Michelle , Woodmeister , Fluxtransistor,

Thank you for all your responses. I have marked all as helpful.

The volume control with Windows and Android devices works directly from the device.

Thanks once again for your inputs.

Thanks for your reply. The details provided in your link with HDMI for MAC doesn't work for the MAC BOOK Air running Big Sur 11.5.2 connected via an Apple USB-C to HDMI adapter to a LG smart TV.

Here is a screenshot for your reference -

  • The volume bar indicated with the green arrow indicated shows that the slider is greyed out and can't be used .

The issue should be easily reproducible with the MAC BOOK AIR . Are you able to verify this internally in Apple?

This issue is never faced when using a Windows OS or Android OS device connected via HDMI to the LG smart TV.

Thanks once again.
