appstored process downloading crazy amounts of data even when AppStore app is not running

Hello, I got a new laptop recently (macOS 11.5.2). The process "appstored" is downloading data in the background like there's no tomorrow. Auto updates are OFF from System preferences and App Store app preferences. Moreover there are no updates pending.

In 10 days, it has wasted almost 250 GB or so (according to my calculations).

I keep killing the appstored process but it respawns. I signed out of my Apple account in AppStore app to no avail. It keeps downloading even when AppStore app itself is quit from the dock.

Anyone face this problem and knows a fix?

Hi Dave. This is a new laptop provided (and managed) by our company.

I have checked from activity monitor and it's "appstored" that's downloading continuously. Yesterday i monitored it and it downloaded 2GB in half hour. It keeps downloading even if i quit AppStore, logout of AppStore account or kill the appstored process(it comes back again).

I do have third party apps like browsers, Wireshark, SourceTree, Slack, Teams,T eamviewer etc.

The problem doesn't exist in Safe mode because I don't see appstored being run there. Also, I don't see appstored in my other Catalina/Monterey Beta machines.

There are no updates pending or in progress. The OS is upto date, not enrolled in beta programs. All AppStore apps are up to date. Moreover, auto update is turned off.

I took a sample and the process' path is /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AppStoreDaemon.framework/Support/appstored. It's Identifier is appstored and Parent Process is launchd. The user for this process in "Activity Monitor" says "_appstore"

It's possible that one of the company MDM profiles is causing this as I don't see this on non-managed devices.

Hey there santosh204!

Based on your post it sounds like you have a process running in the background using up data.

Did you make any changes before this or did you install any third-party apps?

Does the issue continue testing in and out of safe mode?

Have you checked for any activity or pending updates in the App Store? Take a look and keep us updated.

Start up your Mac in safe mode

Warm regards.
