When I delete an email on my iPhone, it does not get deleted from my Gmail

On my iPhone SE, iOS v14.7.1, I use the iOS Mail app to view my Gmail emails. I've got it set to delete email messages from the server when I delete them. While those emails delete from my phone, they do not delete from Gmail. Any ideas why this might be happening and how I could fix it? Thanks!

Hi there Binnorie,

We understand when deleting messages from your Gmail account through the Mail app, they are removed from the app, but seem to remain when you check the Gmail website. Do we understand that correctly?

If so, the "Decide how long to keep deleted emails" section of the following page may be helpful: Delete and recover emails in Mail on iPhone

Try shortening the time interval, and testing to see if the messages are removed from Gmail, once they are removed from the Trash mailbox in Mail.

Cheers!

We appreciate you keeping us up to speed Binnorie,

To clarify a few things, per the article: Delete and recover emails in Mail on iPhone

"Note: Some email services might override your selection; for example, iCloud doesn’t keep deleted emails longer than 30 days, even if you select Never."

It is recommended to check your Gmail account settings by logging into the web access version (using a compatible web browser) of Gmail to see what options are selected when deleting emails.

This may be different than what is on your iPhone. Also, Gmail doesn't have the option to delete emails from after a specific time period. This feature is from the email service provider. Yahoo Mail for example does have this option on iOS.

Thanks

Hi again Binnorie,

As mentioned previously, Gmail doesn't offer the option to change the interval of when messages are deleted through email clients, like the Mail app. For this particular issue, we recommend reviewing Gmail account settings, outside of the Mail app, through the Gmail website.

For further assistance, you can get help specific to Gmail, here: Gmail Help

Take care!

Greetings Binnorie,

Since you've reviewed available settings on your iPhone, the logical next place to look would be at server side settings for your Gmail account, which can affect how the Mail app handles messages from that account.

If you haven't yet, we recommend visiting your Gmail account from a web browser to review the settings there, and reviewing the information and assistance available from the Gmail Help site that was linked to previously.

Cheers!

I was hoping that this was the solution, but the option to choose how long to keep deleted emails isn't available to me.

Referring to the directions on the link you provided, under Settings>Mail>Accounts, I tapped the email account I'm having the issue with. After that, there was no Mail or Advanced option available to me. If I tap Account>Advanced, there is nothing that provides an option to Remove or select a time interval.

Thanks for your help.

The last response is unhelpful.

There is no option on my iPhone to choose how long deleted emails remain on my phone.

I cannot determine on my iPhone how long emails I've deleted from the server stay stored on my phone.

When I delete messages from my iPhone, they are not subsequently deleted from gmail even though my iPhone email settings are set to 'delete from server'.

I cannot find where to set on my iPhone how long emails remain after deletion before they get deleted completely from the server. I want them to delete immediately. I don't want there to be a delay.
