No sound when using Apple maps on Ios15

I have updates to iOS 15, and now have no sound (voice directions) when using the app. Checked all the obvious causes, but still nothing.

Was working perfectly up to iOS 14.8

My Fix that worked...on iPhone SE (2nd Gen) and Hyundai Santa Fe

Settings

Maps

scroll down to

Spoken Direction

tap and turn on

Directions on Radio

This appears to work if car bluetooth supports phone sound via car stereo system.

Agreed, I can only get the sound from maps on my iPhone if I disconnect Bluetooth from my car. This is useless as I want my phone to be connected to Bluetooth, but I want the navigation audio to play through my phone. In previous versions of maps, there was a toggle that let you select where you wanted the audio to play from. For whatever reason, Apple omitted the functionality. Google Maps and Waze seamlessly allow their users to select the audio options. Please bring the functionality back.

It is available for the iPhone, I am able to get the map directions on my iPhone while it is connected to Bluetooth in my vehicle. I just need to turn off the Directions on Radio switch on the phone. That stops the directions on the radio and sends them back through the iPhone. Most of the time I turn that off though, since I have the Apple Watch and get my turn directions on the Watch as well. But in heavier traffic situations, I will turn the sound back on for the iPhone. I have an iPhone 13 Pro with iOS 152.1, Apple Watch with watchOS 8.3, and this is used on a 2015 Mercedes Benz C300.

I found a workaround, awkward but it works:

  • I have a 2016 BMW with "rudimentary" BlueTooth connectivity so that my calls can be made and received Hands-Free
  • Unfortunately, the GPS Voice Prompts are heard only partially, the beginning of the message is usually cut-off. I have "enough" of the message to be useful.
  • In order to get the Voice-Prompts on my car system, I switch on the "Directions on Radio" button. (See image).
  • If I want to have the full Voice Prompts, I have to "Disconnect" my phone from the car Bluetooth system. But then, I lose my ability to have calls made on my Bluetooth car system.
  • You would think that just switching off the "Directions on Radio" button would let the voice prompts work on the phone speaker system, but I hear nothing when I do. Apple has to fix this.

I’m using an iPhone XS Max with OS 15.1 and connected to CarPlay via lightning cable with Bluetooth disabled. Even after enabling “Directions on Radio”, I still hear a DOINK sound when I should be hearing verbal instructions. In addition, sometimes the volume selection mode gets stuck in “voice volume” instead of “audio volume”. When this happens, the radio volume is decreased and volume buttons on my console and steering wheel both adjust the “voice volume”….even though there is NO voice!!! The only way I have found out of this is to close the maps app from my iPhone and then re-open the app from CarPlay.

Then if the sound requires you to turn off Bluetooth and the switch is not working, I would definitely check with the vehicle manufacturer to see if they have some other particular setting on their vehicle. I've tried this on 3 different vehicles and it works just as I said. With the switch off the sound is through the phone, and with it on it is through the vehicle. I also get my notifications through my Apple Watch as well. The switch that I described is what replaces previous settings. It is there to have the sound play through the phone or the vehicle.

Understood. You want Apple maps turn by directions turn to play through phone speaker but phone calls and music apps to play to car via Bluetooth. Best I can tell that is not available since IOS 15. Cannot chose volume level for turn by turn separately from phone or music either. It is frustrating. I use Apple Maps for directions to point of interest destinations because the voice activation via SIRI is so simple and effective. For travel however I too use Google maps or WAZE. Each has its strong points. Unfortunately Apple Maps simply isn’t as usable as it was before IOS15.

I agree, there are no audio options in maps anymore. I want my phone to play the maps navigation audio while my phone is connected to my car through Bluetooth. The only workaround I have found is to disable Bluetooth while in my car. Oh or I use WAZE because it lets you select audio options. Apple, please fix this and bring back audio options in maps!
