No sound when using Apple maps on Ios15

I have updates to iOS 15, and now have no sound (voice directions) when using the app. Checked all the obvious causes, but still nothing.

Was working perfectly up to iOS 14.8

This issue has nothing to do with my vehicle, lol. Apple just needs to fix the functionality within Apple Maps. Again, the functionality was there with all previous versions of maps. If I turn the switch on, the audio plays through my car speakers, if I turn the switch off, the audio does not play through the speakers because the phone still has Bluetooth enabled and is connected to the car's audio, the sound cannot play through the phone speakers. The workaround is to choose to play audio through the phone even though Bluetooth is enabled and connected to the car. This used to be a feature and is now gone. Waze and Google Maps still have this feature and Waze is what I use now mostly because of this. Apple just needs to add the functionality back. I have this problem with two different brand vehicles. I do not have carplay on either vehicle either.

Yep, well after doing some digging around, there are a lot of people with this issue and it is a known problem. Previously you could simply select the device audio source directly from Maps. This functionality is now gone.

Instead, and I just learned this last night. When I want to use Apple Maps with Bluetooth connected to my car, but I want the sound to come from my phone, not the car. I launch Apple Maps and then from the control center (I swipe down from the top right of the phone) then in the top right in the audio box (I think it's called Airplay) I unselect car accessory Bluetooth and select iPhone. Bamm, problem solved. I can now use the car's Bluetooth functionality with my phone and have Apple Map's audio play through my phone.

I am not sure if Apple intentionally did this for the audio options, but if there are other people with this problem, please let them know to just change the audio options from the control center.

I think it is vehicle specific. Hyundai Santa Fe Premium SE 2015

Before iOS update the sound played from the iPhone only.

Following update I could get no sound at all until I discovered Settings/Maps/Spoken Directions.

Now directions/sound comes through the car speakers via bluetooth and interrupts anything already playing.

Personally I find this better as the instructions are clearer and easily heard.

I can appreciate that if navigating an urban area then continual interruptions fromApple Maps could annoy some people though.

I have an Apple Watch and the haptics/sounds from that are a very useful early warning of action to be taken prior to the verbal warning/instruction.

I've had a number of different Hyundai in the past, a 2012 Sonata Hybrid, two 2017 Elantras, 2 that did not have Bluetooth, and now a 2022 Tucson Hybrid. I found with my 2012 Hybrid, I had a separate control on the vehicle that changed where the sound came from for navigation. However, now it seems with the 2017 Elantra the sound will come from the car or the phone using the switch I displayed earlier in the thread. I'm not experiencing any problems getting it to do what I want, I was just helping others. I've also made the comment that it could be the car, but not everyone is agreeing with that.

I too have been troubled with the absence of turn by turn direction Bluetooth audio since IOS 15. In my case that occurred simultaneously with my replacement of a Xr with a new 13Pro. It took a bit of research to realize the issue was IOS 15 changes rather than my new hardware. While turn by turn volume is still too low relative to Siri and music apps I was also having issues with Siri not working while a music app ( usually Pandora)was playing and also the audio turn by turn directions being totally absent and replaced by a ding sound. Yesterday I found that by turning off microphone access for Pandora in privacy these two problems were solved. Now for the volume. Still too low and no option to increase it relative to Siri and Music apps. I liked the old way with the loud, normal and low options.

I've been successful in increasing the volume for turn by turn directions while using my car's Bluetooth connection by using the volume buttons on the side of the phone while connected to Bluetooth in the car. Seems there is a separate control for increasing the gain of the signal being sent to the car via Bluetooth and that is increase by adjusting the volume control on the phone itself. Hope that helps. It also will make a difference in your call volume for telephone calls. I experienced an issue where even attempting to turn up the volume control in the car did not raise the volume at all. Turning up the volume as I said make a volume slider appear on the left side of the screen, and like other volume sliders showed an icon, and this one showed what looked like a Bluetooth icon in it.

Yes I have done this also but in my experience it also increases the volume of the music app in use which is Bluetooth connected to the car. This makes the music far too loud. The problem could be solved if the volume of the turn by turn directions were more similar to the volume of the music app. In my case usually Pandora. I know

Yes! This works! Finally a solution without having to turn off bluetooth. The only thing you cant do is use bluetooth for anything else besides Apple Maps when you are using the app. When Apple Maps isnt open bluetooth is restored to play through the car stereo. I wish they would just go back to old way and have the option in settings of playing Apple Maps through the phone without having to go to control center and pressing airplay to select iphone. Just glad it works somehow. Thanks for the instructions!

Justin 444, After spending over an hour on the phone with an Apple senior advisor, gathering data to send to engineering I tried this and it worked. In my case I have a Honda Accord with HandsFreelink. Following your tip I opened Maps then opened the control center on my iPhone. I found that in the control center AirPlay was defaulted to HandsFreelink and I had the option to select iPhone. Once I did that Maps worked perfectly with the audio now coming thru my iPhone as it did in IOS 14.8.

I don't understand why Apple removed the audio option in maps in IOS 14. The new update is a setback not an improvement. They have confused the advisors at tech support to the point that they can't help. They pretty much say to submit a feedback report and hope it will be addressed in a future update.

I don't know how you figured this out but all I can say is thanks.

Jenna, I spoke with 3 Apple senior advisors and spent more than an hour with one troubleshooting this. The last advisor gathered files and sent this to engineering. None of the advisers know how to fix this. However Justin444 found the solution. I tried his recommendation and it works for me. An Apple senior advisor called me back to continue gathering information for engineering and when I showed her the solution she thanked me and said she will now use this on future calls. I don’t expect a fix from Apple anytime soon returning the audio selection to the previous position where it was in IOS 14 as this was a new design. I find their new design a setback and not an improvement.
