Just transferred from my old iPhone X max to the new 13 Pro Max and the storage used more than doubled on the 13. Went from 87 gig on the X to 187 on the 13. It looks like most of the increase was due to the photo library taking way more storage. Any thoughts?

I spent most of my evening trying to figure this out. I believe photos is taking up so much storage because with the newer phones the “my photos and shared with you” is automatically turned on. You will see this in your photo album, upper right corner with the 3 dots. This stores all photo attachments from iMessage in your photos storage. To turn this off and avoid your phone automatically saving and storing these photos you go to settings > messages > shared with you > toggle off photos

I did the steps after the storage issue showed up. I didn’t restore phone. It took a few minutes for storage size to go down, it wasn’t immediate and in fact I didn’t think it worked for me but I checked storage 15mins later and it had worked.
Interesting ya that didn’t work for me after an hour went by still showing to the same storage. One thing I don’t get with this issue is removing live text feature now we won’t be able to use this new feature going forward. There must be more apple can do to fix this issue.
yeah it’s not good to have to turn off this new feature, we cant use it anymore. Apple should really fix the issue. Or maybe it’s a way to get people to buy phones with more storage…? Not sure why it didn’t work for you sorry… must be frustrating.
Haha ya your right I wonder if it’s a tactic to get people to buy more storage. I came from a 256gb and I thought why not get a 128gb since I’m only using 82gb. Definitely not the case now. Wonder if they will let me return this phone only been a week and get the 256 if this is how it’s going to be.
So If I’ve reset my old XS to factory settings and given it away, there’s no way of ‘undoing’ the doubled photo storage on my 13 without live text?

I have the exact same problem with the 12promax. Attempted the above, but didn’t work. It only brought it down by a couple of gigs.
Is there anything else to try?
Wow I am having the same issue I just upgraded to the 13 pro max from my xs max and I am Noticing the same thing. Curious if you have figured out a solution yet. ?
Would be worth a try if that storage tip isn’t working for you. Really hope Apple sorts this out though.. maybe in their next iOS update

Photo storage on my XS (256gb) was about 45gb so I decided iPhone 13 (128gb) was adequate.
The transferred photos expanded to 85gb, and with Apps etc I’m over 110gb already on my new iPhone 13.
I thought I was dreaming!
If Apple warned us this was going to happen, I would have bought iPhone 13 (256gb).
