iPad jitters

My 11” iPad Pro was delivered yesterday. The transfer of things from my original iPad Pro went smoothly, but passwords outside of Safari didn’t make it. I still can’t get mail to work. It came with some flavor of OS 14, so I did the upgrade to 15. That messed up the placement of my apps on the desktop to give me a clock and weather reports and stuff in their place. I spent a while rearranging things, but I still don’t have them all moved back to convenient places. Maybe I shouldn’t bother, and just send it and the keyboard and the Pencil back while I can. But I’d really like this to work. I like the screen and the keyboard especially. My old iPad could hold me a lot longer with a battery replacement.

But the most annoying thing is in Safari. Scrolling is often jittery, and it is not unusual for it to just sit there jiggling back and forth. Maybe over the years I could get used to that. I gather it is a common problem. There seems to be no difference between 14 and 15 in this regard. Of course my old iPad doesn’t have the problem. Should I give up on this otherwise nice model and wait for Apple to come out with something better, or should I try jumping through hoops to get my Home Screen back in order and getting Mail to access my accounts?

That doesn’t seem to describe what I (and apparently others) am observing. I can remove my hand from the screen and sit and watch it jiggle until I scroll some more. It is like a line and the line above it are rapidly alternating. It will do it in the midst of scrolling, too, but it is possible to stop on the interminable jiggle.

The jittery or “jelly” or wave-like scrolling is normal for ANY iPad model.

iPads and tablet screens have always had this issue to some extent and is more noticeable is some iPad models than others.

The new 2021 iPad Mini 6 models show this “jelly-like, wavy scrolling to more of an extent, but Apple is stating that this has ALWAYS been the case and is perfectly normal and expected behaviour, especially when an iPad is used in portrait screen orientation as the length of scrolling is much longer than it is a landscape screen orientation.

It takes the pixels toward the bottom of the screen more time to catch up with the pixels toward or near the top of the screen.

With normal scrolling use habits and NOT scrolling to the point of unreadability, this wavy scrolling issue should NOT be something that is noticed in everyday use.

This is NOT any software or hardware issue.

Apple states this is normal and expected behaviour and not any type of defect.

I have a 2015 and 2016 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro models that I, almost exclusively, use in landscape screen orientation.

The wavy scrolling It is almost unnoticeable in this orientation.

Yesterday, I decided to try using my iPad in portrait screen orientation for awhile and ”LO AND BEHOLD” there was some noticeable unevenness, wave-like scrolling as one side of the screen appears to scroll faster than the left side of the screen and vice versa, if I turn my iPad 180˚, in portrait mode, then the wavy-ness is in the other direction.

The left side of the screen scrolls faster than the right.

So, this issue has always been there with iPad screens.

It is still not nearly as bad as it is with the new 2021 iPad Mini 6, but is still perceptibly present.

Did not know that this even happens with tablet screens.

In normal page scrolling use, this effect is pretty much a non-issue and has no effect when using a normal reading/viewing scrolling action.

So, I learned something new, yesterday, myself.

If you want really good and very accurate info on tech and iPads, in particular, you should, also, follow Lotus Pilot's postings.

Lotus Pilot seems to be continually motivated to stay the King/Leader of the iPad community.

His knowledge, it appears most times, eclipses my own and is even more verbose than my own.

Lotus Pilot is always consistently and constantly posting here.

He is the one here you really need to follow.

I have been part of these communities for almost 20 years and I am STILL not a Level 10 regular contributor here.

Lotus Pilot rocketed to Level 10 and beyond ( still going ) in about a year!

I just feel real inadequate here and I am just trying to get to Level 10 contributor status ( 80K points ) and I am just going to step off these communities for good!

Lotus Pilot seems content to stay here every day, sharing/posting the knowledge here and it appears to be much more extensive tech knowledge than my own.

There have been 3 or 4 other new member contributors before Lotus Pilot who also raced to the Level 10 top of the pyramid, that I have been completely exhausted by the meteoric rise of these users that came here.

One user, QuickPost, made it to Level 10 here in about 6 months!'

Users, like Lotius Pilot and earlier users, have really “stole the wind from my sails” and I am ready to “dock my boat and boatload of Apple knowledge” and call my help, in these communities, done!

20 years of helping iPad and Mac and MacOS users is long enough.

That is all I have to write about this.

Thank You, once again, for all of your kind remarks.

Appreciate it!

If your new iPad is having some other scrolling issue, then, if purchased from Apple, you have a 14-day, unconditional return policy to return this device to either refund your money OR get another new replacement device.

You will need to search online for your nearest, “local” Apple store location and call contact phone numbers and call to make an appointment to have your Apple iPad returned and replaced with another new unit.

Open the replacement unit and operate and use it, in the store, to make sure the new replacement iPad Pro has NO glaring damage or operational issues.

I guess I'll just live with it. It is just annoying to pay that kind of money and not get the level of performance that my old iPad had. I have read enough posts from people with a similar problem that just swapping out devices is unlikely to be a fix. It is just annoying, and seems to affect just Safari. Maybe Apple will fix it in OS 16.

So I will invest the time to get my home screen back organized after iPad OS 15 messed it up. (Why would they assume as default that you want new junk on your home screen, pushing off the things you actually use?)

And right now I'm not traveling, so I can always check my email on my Mac, the iPhone, and until I send it in as a trade-in, my old iPad. Surely I can get Mail to work before I go to a basketball tournament in November. My iPhone update went so well last year, I guess I got spoiled.
