IOS 15 - Mail being marked as read before being opened

After updating to iOS 15.1 and then hard restarting my phone (hold until apple logo), this issue has not reappeared for me. I have Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, and Microsoft Exchange emails syncing, and all is well now.

It was terribly annoying and scary when it was marking items as Read initially. Try the above and see if it helps?

I opened an Apple ticket with the same concern. They told me to delete the affected email account (Optimum) and then add it back. I didn’t see how this could possibly work, but it did!

Are you reading email on another device, or do you have filters filing it on another device? Once an email is read on one device it is marked as read on all devices.

Support confirmed it’s a known bug with iOS 15 (all updates).

If you found this forum post on Google like I did, report using the Support link at the top of this page as was suggested elsewhere, and they may set up a call for you with a senior analyst to troubleshoot. The more who do that, hopefully the sooner they’ll figure it out and fix it.

Update: The issue seems to be solved since iOS 15.1!

15.1 fixed the problem for me. That’s too bad it’s caused new issues for other people.

Soooo…..deleting and adding my email account worked for about 2 hours, and then my unread markers all disappeared. I took some advice here and rebooted my phone after deleting the email account. So far so good😬

Are you in the habit of killing apps from the “multitasking” screen? Doing so can cause this (and other) problems.

You need to restart the phone after deleting the account, or it will recognize the previous settings.

Since updating to iOS 15.1 and rebooting my iPhone afterwards I never saw this issue again.

Can confirm that this is not a problem with iOS 15. None of my 7 email accounts exhibit this problem. All you have confirmed is that the problem occurs on your phone. You have not confirmed that it is a generic problem with iOS 15. But you should let Apple know about it using the Get Support link at the top of this page. They may be able to help you determine why it is a problem with your phone, and also log it so if there is a pattern they can analyze it.

Was on the phone with multiple senior advisors yesterday. They asked that you contact them to make it known that this is a systemic issue so they can get developers to look into it.

You can do that but clicking at the top and selecting Get Support.

This is a user-to-user thread. You post is helpful, but only to other users. It provides no information to Apple, who doesn’t participate in this forum. It would be helpful if you and others with this issue would use the Get Support link so Apple can log and track the problem.
