homepod makes loud pop and disconnects from AirPlay after upgrading to iOS 15

I upgraded my HomePod to iOS 15 and since then have had an issue with it making a loud popping noise (loud enough to wake my dog) and then disconnect from my iPad. I am using AirPlay and connect to both HomePod and HomePod mini. All devices are running current iOS 15 versions. There is no issue with the mini. I am able to reconnect the HomePod after about 3 minutes.

Anyone else having this issue.

I have the exact same issue and hopefully the info below will help for clarification of a potential hardware issue your HomePod.

With the popping sound and then the HomePod disconnecting and resetting itself after 2-3 minutes it is best to check on the iPhone, the HomePod been set up with, for a possible hardware issue.

Using your iPhone you can do this by:

1.Going into the Home App, selecting the HomePod that makes the popping sound by pressing your finger onto its icon and it will open the settings for this HomePod.

2.Scroll to the bottom and on the right there will be a grey cog icon (the HomePod's settings) and tap on this.

3.Another menu will pop up with all the various settings for the HomePod but you need to scroll down to Analytics and Improvements and tap on this menu.

4.There will be another menu that reads Analytics Data and you need to tap on this. This menu will then show lines of text of what the HomePod does when running in the background. You need to look at a line that starts panic-full (you should see the date(s) of when the popping occurs and there will be a time recorded which will match up to when the popping sound and disconnect happens.

My HomePod has just done 2 separate popping noises and then reconnected to my iPhone. In my Analytics Data is shows the following:

panic-full-2021-11-18-121115

panic-full-2021-11-18-121434

Those figures that read 121115 or 121434 means time recorded of 12:11pm (and 15 seconds) or 12:14pm (and 34 seconds) which is approximately 3 minutes between each popping noise, disconnect and then reconnection.

No amount of resetting/unpairing with the HomeApp will change this. Sadly, it is a hardware issue and the only way forward is to replace the HomePod if it's still in warranty/covered under consumer law that applies to the country it's been bought from or pay for an out of warranty replacement as long as the HomePod is in stock. If it doubt always seek advice at an Apple Store or call/chat with Apple Support. They are there to help...

Mine as well. With HomePod OS 15 my full sized HomePods started making that random popping sound, when they were t even being used. After the last updates to those and APPLE TV I set my HomePods up as default sound. They keep randomly disconnecting and reconnecting to my Eero 6 Pro network, they show up as private devices with a random MAC address that is different each time, there’s now a list of about 8 or 9 in my Eero offline list as this keeps happening. When it does they may reconnect, or one may reconnect and the other will not. This is not happening to my HomePod Mini’s that are also up to date and being used with 4th gen Apple TV’s as well.

If Apple remains mute still over this matter, class action might be the solution there. We paid a lot of money for these wether they are produced or not. Needless to update the firmware to get spatial audio if nothing is done against this « popgate » that appeared with iOS 15. My salary is different from Mr. Cook’s and I cannot buy such items as if I was buying bubble gum. You say you care for your clients, that we are you soul. Your move Apple.

15.2 installed... while I didn't hear the popping noises yet, the system seemed more buggy. One of my HomePods in a stereo pair dropped out when asked to restart a song, the Home app said all home pods were playing although none of them were when I made a song request to Siri, and I had to reboot all homepods to get them to play again, and the entire system seems a little tinny, although I don't have reduce base turned on.

I cannot put into words how frustrating this is. I have close to $2000.00 in HomePods and HomePod mini's. You would think that before pushing something THIS BUGGY out the door while charging a premium for it, Apple would have made sure they were ready for prime time. I mean, I never had a wired speaker give me this much trouble. I just want them to friggin' work. And what is even MORE frustrating is that Apple continues to push out new options before ensuring the basic task of just working does that... works. I'm really considering Sonos at this point.

This just started happening to mine. Out of the blue. Happens to both speakers just randomly. No way is this a hardware issue. So apple admits on the phone that they are aware of it but still recommends bringing it to a shop?? Come on apple you’re a big - be proactive and admit to everyone there’s a problem!! Then we won’t be so concerned if you’re “working” on it. Otherwise these are going back to Costco. Ty!

So disabling Siri did not solve the problem. Happened this morning after only an hour of playing. Disappointing is an understatement. How do you make a product, charge a massive fee, then stop supporting it? Steve Jobs would be rolling over in his grave.

Apple needs to come up with a plan other than taking it to the Genius Bar.

Hello jdo_apple

Was just wondering, and didn’t know who else to ask, plus you’re a community specialist; are you or someone else able to confirm whether or not Apple actually read these threads and take them into consideration?

I read somewhere that Apple do, and in the footnotes it says;

“Apple may provide or recommend responses as a possible solution based on the information provided…”

Thanks

Thanks jjones17, appreciated

Don’t worry, I’ll persist alright, and I don’t want replacements either

Am pretty sure it’s software like you say - thought as much from the start - I’m no expert but am quite savvy sometimes - it’s fairly obvious it’s the software playing up the CPU (logs)

Have you noticed how it turns itself up sometimes to full whack when it’s idle - that may have something to do with it also (pop)

Will my call today be a waste of time? I get an inkling it might be… but I want to get our views across nevertheless and log a formal complaint, I may write to them too 😡

Mine haven’t popped since 18/12 and that was only on the one out of the four on that day

In my experience with my family of four pods, if they wanna experience a pop they’ll have to induce one! Cos they don’t pop that often and it’s usually only one out of the four at any one time - it’s happened to three of them I think but only on four or five occasions since OS 15 - most frequently about once a week (am quite lucky at the mo)

15.2 is still very buggy and there have been more Beta’s with 15 than usual for tvOS in the past (lots more new features to test obvs but more ironings out to do with older features)

I guess all I can do is try and speak out firmly for us, insist on resetting of any type is futile, maybe a test wouldn’t go a miss, and to look at this forum carefully and seriously and to take us and the issue seriously - as someone said before on here - there should be plenty of logs with data to go on to sort this mess out

I’ll update after my call today

I didn’t mention that bit because he didn’t sound as convincing as the other parts but he did say, with what they know currently, that it shouldn’t damage the unit (pinch of salt on this one I reckon)

If you can I’d automate the volume to min at night - it may help you never know - but the unit may max out anyway when it crashes (which is what he said and that it shouldn’t happen)
