Problem: you need a second computer with the same or an higher operating system version.

As I didn’t have a second machine with Monterey already running, I went to the Apple Store and they revived the T2 chip. Problem solved and I hope this will also help others who faced bricked computers after the Monterey install.

Senior Advisor advised to make an appt at Apple Store Genius Bar (means a day off work and a day's journey - time/cost !) Apparently the Apple Support system does not allow an advisor to authorise a return/repair procedure without the customer paying upfront once the device is out of warranty - mine's late 2018. This is regardless of the fact that this whole issue is totally caused by Apple's Monterey upgrade. Maybe they need Microsoft to come in and re-wite their support programme. We'll see what happens tomorrow - but I'm not holding my breath. Will report back

Wanted to give everyone an inspiring update. As some may remember, my 2019 MacBook Pro died mid Monterey update. Apple store wanted $572 to fix, and I balked. I got a call from Apple Support yesterday, telling me they looked more closely at the issue and would be willing to exchange my busted laptop for a comparable model.

The key here seemed to be the fact that I bought my device from Apple in early 2020. I was able to exchange my device for a new one, restoring my faith in Apple. There is no exchange program I'm aware of. I seemed to be lucky enough to have someone followup on my case, even after I refused the charge to fix.

So I strongly urge everyone suffering the same problem with fairly newish MacBooks to continue reaching out and working with Apple support. Use this as an example even.

Update. Took my 2020 MacBook Pro to the “Genius Bar”. They couldn’t fix it there, wanted to keep for a day or two. Today got a call saying that their efforts have failed, they have to send it somewhere and get it “refurbished”. Mine is still under the limited warranty, so it will cover the repair.

That Monterey update was literacy da bomb. 🙄

So, what they told you on the phone is false. Senior Advisor can authorize a repair/replacement without you needing to pay upfront.

The only thing is that they will need you to take to Apple or to an Authorized Service Center to check. They can't just authorize without having a look at the computer.

They authorized mine. Is right now at the service center. Should get it in about a week or so.

This definitely hurts. I spoke with two different senior advisors and both declined to authorise a repair/replacement without paying. I was asked to leave a feedback at apple.com/feedback and if there is a service program, they'll call me back. It's so frustrating. I went to two different Authorized Service centers for them to get a second opinion.

All’s turned out well. The Apple Genius assistant was able to do a Revive procedure and then did the Monterey update. So I’ve got all my data back and an up to date operating system. Shouldn’t have happened but I’ve learnt a lesson - wait a few months before doing an update. Thanks for all the support and advice during a stressful time! I hope others have as positive an outcome

I paid out of pocket, because my 2019 MacBookPro bricked and the Apple Store sent it out to repair 10/30/21 a day before the first MacRumors posting (11/1) that this was a problem with the Monterey update that I had installed a few days earlier. I phoned Apple today, talked to a Senior Adviser, who sent me to the local Apple Store who indicated that it was a physical problem with the machine (that went over the edge because I had updated to Monterey) so they could not give me a refund. So, long series of phone calls this morning, but no refund. I'll dispute the Visa charge when it comes through next month, but that seems to be all that's left that I can do.

Just so everybody knows, Apple did an “exception” and agreed to fix my 2016 Mac. The service is ready and I’m picking it up tomorrow.

But I had to phone them some times to get it. All times I brought up the Apple forums and the tech websites reporting on the issue.

But always polite.

A bricked pc because of an OS update is something it shouldn’t happen. Apple maybe should consider stop pushing firmware updates together with OS updates. I’m not an engineer, but this seems to have been the reason.

Even i brought up this forum twice and i've informed them that 3 ppl got their macs repaired without charge. But they are replying the same to me that unless apple starts a service program we cannot authorise a repair free of charge.

I've raised a complaint in the consumer court as a last resort. If that doesn't work out, i'll have to repair it out of pocket and stop buying macbooks in future. It's really sad that a software update can brick our laptops and the senior advisors cannot authorize a repair knowing and accepting the fact that the laptop is bricked because of faulty os update.

Well for those interested I have an update on my particular issue. I don’t have a T2 chip, so revive didn’t work. Tried a new power supply, did not work. Found an iMac on eBay with a busted shell and screen. Logic board seemed to be in good working order. Bought it. It arrived yesterday. Stripped all the parts and pieces. Installed the new logic board. Plugged Catalina thumb drive and hit the power and option key. Unfortunately my keyboard was dead so it booted into windows. I can work with that, *pumps fist in the air*. Plugged keyboard in, booted into recovery. Deleted that Monterey update by formatting the the apple drive and hallelujah it’s installing. So $200 later it looks like I’m back in business. Good luck to everyone having issues and thanks for all the input.
