AirPods 3 High Pitched noise.

I just got the new AirPods 3 and a very high pitched ringing/rattling noise comes out of the right AirPod only when no sound is playing.

Is that normal?

Would this be a software bug or could it be hardware related?

I only have them connected to my iPhone 11 if that helps.

Thank You.

Your description sounds rather like audio feedback, so it could be as simple as making sure the AirPod is correctly positioned in your ear, and the volume setting is not too high.

Follow Apple's advice in How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support to reset and reconnect your AirPods. If that doesn't solve the problem you might have a defective AirPod, contact Apple Support.

Got My AirPods on the release day and had the right earbud producing the high frequency sound when no music playing, like everyone else here.

Went to apple store and they gave me a replacement for both buds (they found left had charging issues).

New buds are worse. Both earbuds have high frequency when no music playing. Plus the right bud also makes a constant buzzing sound that I cannot get rid of, even if I play music. Requested an apple care express repair and 8 days later I still haven’t received the 3rd pair.

I had the same problem. Went to the apple store to get them replaced but the replacement unit had the same problem but worsened. Having an appointment at Genius Bar again today to get them replaced once again. If the problem still persist, might have to get a refund. Probably a problem with the newer batch of AirPods 3rd Generation.

1st Pair: Noise only occurs when nothing is played

2nd Pair (Replaced): Noise occurs continuously, even when not connected to any devices via Bluetooth, louder than previous pair

I think it might be a hardware or software problem for different pairs.

I have the same issue, sent back my AirPods 3 to apple and got new ones but the noise is still there (though a bit quieter). On both it was only the right airpod.

What’s funny is most people can’t hear it, I thought I had a weird hearing issue, so I’m glad I’m not the only one.

Thanks for the background noise trick, it’s much better! Hopefully apple will fix it soon…

Totally. I understand that. It definitely isn’t just a problem you have with your ears. It’s very wide spread and my old airpods don’t do it at all. I’m the same I don’t want to lose out on returning and getting my money back. I think they’ve extended their return policy tho so maybe check at your location. Best case is they announce there will be a fix for this and we can keep what we have and at least know a fix is coming.

The fact that apple isn’t acknowledging this is really terrible. There fix was a replacement pair they would mail to me after the engineering department found no issue. They said they would mail me a new pair and I can send those back. I said that’s fine I will just return at the store cause it was easier. Did that four times and every single pair I exchanged them for was the same problem. So many people have this issue and it’s been going on for months now. They really should stand behind their product and at least acknowledge there is a big problem here and either they are working on a fix or something. Very frustrating and massive hassle to constantly be going into the store or even speaking to apple support where you get the same response each time cause they don’t know what to do.

The update 4C170 has significantly reduced the noise for me in the right bud. I still hear it ever so slightly, so I’m happy there’s an improvement.

I guess this all comes down to our ear sensitivity. The new update will fix it for some who can’t hear the new quieter pitch.

Still, it’s ridiculous this is even a thing in the first place. Were ALL of their testers unable to hear higher frequencies? I’d have thought they would have ultra sensitive machines for quality control that can detect extra noise/frequencies coming out the buds.

I just received my airpods 3, FW is 4C170.

I hear a high pitched noise from the right airpod. I can hear it EVEN with background sound (e.g. rain) at 1%. Setting background sound at 0% DOES NOT fix the problem for me. I can still hear the pitch.

Right airpod battery life is really short.

So still on April 19th Apple is selling a defective product (fw didn't fix it).

Purchased today (4/24) from Apple Store in Soho, NYC. This is my second pair—I returned the first one some time ago when no acknowledgment of what’s clearly a hardware problem was forthcoming. To my despair, the pair I just got (with the most recent firmware) is also defective in the right earbud, even after trying the background noise “hack.” The store clerk told me that she had no way of knowing whether these came from a new or an old batch of AirPods. How can that be? The serial numbers reveal nothing? This is infuriating, and such a massive waste of time—another hour-long round-trip to a store for no reason. Apple really sucks for not fixing or even really acknowledging this problem.
