Quicktime video recording stops at 10:55 in MacOS Monterey

Since upgrading to MacOS Monterey, Quicktime Player now stops recording at 10 minute and 55 seconds. I can no longer record any video segments longer than that. Prior to upgrading, I routinely recorded Quicktime videos in excess of one hour.

I've confirmed that this behavior occurs both with the built-in Mac camera and an external Logitech Brio camera.

I'm now having this issue as well, immediately after installing Monterey. I used to be able to record at high and max quality for hours on end, now, no matter the settings, restarts, and then some, nothing recommended works. It always stops at 10:55. No more, no less. Please work on this...

Ok. I have a MacBook Pro M1 and a iMac desktop 21.5inch Retina 4K, which are both now unfortunately running Monterey. When I use the built-in camera on my iMac, the recording doesn’t stop. I was able to FaceTime with a friend and screen record using QuickTime with no issues. As soon as I use my Logitech external webcam I get the 10:55 stoppage. I even figured out how to change the disk sleep timer to off and it still stopped at 10:55. And with my MacBook Pro I can only record with the Logitech on high but if I try with maximum…10:55. 4 days in a row with apple senior tech advisors and the best answer they have given me is “call us back tomorrow” or “have you tried moving your mouse”. Which is Apple for “we don’t know but we won’t show you what we’re holding until we fix this bug and release an update”. So, we are just going to have to wait.

Hello wtimothyholman,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with recording video longer than 10 minutes 55 seconds in QuickTime since updating to macOS Monterey. Is your Mac connected to power when this happens? Does restarting resolve the issue? Do you get any error messages? If so, what do they say?

Here are a couple of helpful resources for using Quicktime in macOS Monterey:

Record your screen in QuickTime Player on Mac

Record a movie in QuickTime Player on Mac

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thank you for the screenshot wtimothyholman,

Next, what we would recommend, is testing this issue in another user account. What we need to do, is log out of your current user. Log back in under another Standard or Administrator account and see if the same issue occurs there. This way we can tell if it is an issue with your user account, or if it is system wide. This link goes over testing in another user: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

If it persists there, test the issue in safe mode: Start up your Mac in safe mode

Cheers!

I started having the same problem right after upgrading from Yosemite to Monterey.

It almost always fails at 10:55, but occasional exceptions have happened where I could record beyond that time. Those were under the following conditions:

  • The machine was cold during the successful recording, and so the USB port was also cold.
  • The machine was restarted right before the successful recording.

But these exceptions aren't always guaranteed either. I'm now entirely at a loss as for what to do. I'm recording TV programs using a cheap (like $10) HDMI device. I used to be able to record for an hour with the same device with no problem, with Yosemite.

Here is a step-by-step solution to this bug that works more than 75% of the time. Tested on mid-2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, over thirty times.

  1. Download and install Macs Fan Control (only do this step once, then begin with step two each recording session).
  2. Restart your Mac before recording.
  3. Open Macs Fan Control and set both fans to Full Blast (remember this is after machine restart, I enable Full Blast immediately).
  4. Then record your camera, keeping Full Blast on throughout. I recommend using the High quality option, not maximum.

This usually works for me, and sometimes I can do multiple recording sessions (without machine restart) until the bug reappears. If the bug appears after trying these steps, try them again. May take two tries.

Since this bug appears to be related to power consumption and thermals, I also advise you follow these steps:

  1. Go to System Preferences > Battery > Battery > THEN move slider under “Turn off display after…” to Never.
  2. Go to System Preferences > Battery > Power Adapter > THEN move slider under “Turn off display after…” to Never.

One warning, however: I have had issues with recordings corrupting after 45-55 minutes. This is when there is no playback after 45 minutes as the file is stuck on one frame. Sometimes they refused to save, too. The only solution to this was to try again.

Currently zero issues on 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro (16 core GPU) with QuickTime, but will update if encountered.

Latest macOS on both systems.

I have the 2021 Macbook Pro, 16-inch, M1 Max laptop with the latest software of macOS Monterey (12.1) and I have this issue too when doing a movie recording.

After multiple conversations with the Apple Support over phone, we tried all these options (below) and a ticket was submitted to the engineer team (1/13/22). Apparently Apple hasn't supported the Quicktime application in awhile and hopefully they will now. Here's what I did and came to a conclusion of the issue on my end:

  • Movie recording is an issue for me when I set the quality to "maximum", stops at 10:55.
  • Reinstalled macOS Monterey. Recording still stops at 10:55 at maximum quality.
  • Created a test user. Recording still stops at 10:55 at maximum quality.
  • Doing a "high" quality recording worked passed 10:55, no stops. Did this test for each account (admin, user) for a total of 10 recording tests.

I also applied feedback to the apple.com/feedback site for Quicktime. Apparently was told by support by leaving comments there has a much higher success to be looked at than here. Fingers crossed on a solution soon.

Now that I’ve been reading through a lot of these, it sounds as if most of the people posting in here that are having the 10:55 issue are not doing anything similar to what I am doing but the problem is the same. I’ve worked past it and haven’t had an issue in weeks, but unfortunately I can’t suggest the same steps that I used to resolve this since my issue was completely different from most of the people here.

But, if anyone is having this issue using an external webcam, I use a Logitech C920s streaming webcam ( see pictures below for the Logitech fiascos) to record the video content of my podcast using QuickTime and has an M1 MacBook Pro, and never had any issues with Big Sur using the M1 chip. Once Monterey came along and that’s when the you know what hit the fan. So, I assumed it was solely the Monterey OS that was causing it since Logitech claimed the C920s was completely compatible with MacOS 10.0.1 and higher. Then they changed their tune about 2 weeks later. That’s when I was able to figure out the 10:55 problem and this is how you fix it: RECORD ON HIGH, not MAXIMUM. That’s it.

These are the contradicting emails I received from Logitech two weeks apart from each other.

This is how to fix it on a MacBook Pro M1: Here is what you do. Go to system settings>screen saver>turn off screen saver. Then go to battery>Battery make sure optimize video streaming while on battery (if off charger) and then move the slider in Turn off Display After to anytime after an hour or so. Also make sure if you’re using an external webcam (I use a Logitech 920c Streaming webcam) that you record at High, not Maximum. I am still trying to figure out that out, but I have a call with apple tech tomorrow. Will update what happened here. Good luck, reach out if you need anymore help.

I also have a 2020 iMac 4K Retina that still stops at 10:55 but only with an external webcam. I don’t have any issues on either machine just using the built in webcam, only external.

I've tried making QuickTime recordings in a standard (non-admin) user account. The recordings still stop. In safe mode, QuickTime Player crashes when I attempt a recording, which I find even more bizarre.

This is very clearly caused by some sort of bug in the Monterey OS. I've had to resort to pulling an old Mac out of mothballs to do my QuickTime class recordings.
