Quicktime video recording stops at 10:55 in MacOS Monterey

Since upgrading to MacOS Monterey, Quicktime Player now stops recording at 10 minute and 55 seconds. I can no longer record any video segments longer than that. Prior to upgrading, I routinely recorded Quicktime videos in excess of one hour.

I've confirmed that this behavior occurs both with the built-in Mac camera and an external Logitech Brio camera.

I'm now having this issue as well, immediately after installing Monterey. I used to be able to record at high and max quality for hours on end, now, no matter the settings, restarts, and then some, nothing recommended works. It always stops at 10:55. No more, no less. Please work on this...

macOS Monterey is no longer allowing Quicktime to record past 10:55 mins. I've been trying to digitise my old mini tapes using Quicktime but the recording continually stops at 10:55 mins. At first I thought it had something to do with the Battery settings and after changing all relevant options, the problem continued. My saving grace was that I could use my partner's Mac which still runs on the Big Sur operating system.

You would think that upgrades to a new operating system would undergo thorough testing prior to releasing?

Apple, please fix this problem asap.

I can record past 10:55 on QuickTime. It took some time trying to figure out why it would stop at that point but as long as I record on high rather than maximum quality it works fine. As far as all this VHS talk goes I have no idea what anyone is talking about, but when’s record using QuickTime with a Logitech streaming cam for my podcast it works fine on high quality

The VHS talk simply refers to how some of us use QuickTime to help digitize/convert VHS tapes to a more modern format. In my use situation, QuickTime is the app I use to access my video capture setup to do this task. I have a VHS VCR connected to an AV-to-HDMI converter box, which then goes to an HDMI capture dongle connected via USB-C.

I am on Macbook Air 2020, 1TB, 1.2 ghz quad core i7, 16 gb memory, on Big Sur 11.6. Got this April 2020 brand new and Quicktime has NEVER worked for me. All i ever tried to do was play videos on it- like .mov from my photo/video library. They play for 3 seconds and then "quit unexpectedly". And chatting with Apple, or researching on my own has not provided any solution. Im not even using a camera or converting VHS tapes. I just want to watch a video clip. I was hoping a 12 GB Monterey update would be the savior to the constant crashing. But from it sounds like here, Monterey won't help at all. I don't understand why there isn't an QT update or upgrade! Why is Apple ignoring Quicktime?!

Same issue. Not a laptop problem. This is a major Monterey problem. We run a 2019 27" iMAC 3.7GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz; 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory; 512GB SSD storage; Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB of GDDR5 memory.

Used the machine for two years with two different prior OS using external professional PTZ Optics USB camera with no issues for recording videos up to two hours in length. After Monterey update we can't get a video longer than 10:55. Tried changing all the power settings, etc. Quicktime shuts off recordings at 10:55 consistently with external camera. Was able to get a video in excess of two hours using built in camera but that's useless for our purpose. This may be either a USB port time out issue of some kind, a power saving mode issue or some other system wide Monterey issue.

I have considered going to OBS as well, but I prefer the simplicity of QuickTime and I have no real need for the additional features of OBS.

I have been through at least two phone sessions with a friendly Apple tech, and I was instructed to send debug data back to Apple. They have yet to call me back, so after Christmas, I will contact support again with the active case number. I was hoping the most recent Monterey update would have fixed it, but recordings still end at 10:55. Photo Booth also won't work for recording video as it doesn't record sound off my USB capture device, and the video is reversed (though that can be easily fixed with FCP)

Another Apple tech in a support chat also suggest reinstalling macOS. I feel that is rather extreme as besides QuickTime, I've been having no issues with Monterey, and I would have to spend an hour or two setting up all of my preferred apps to what they were before.

Me too on new M1. The fact that there is not a fix still and the fact that this is one of the most used cameras tells me how much apples cares.

Since I bought the M1 to replace a 10 year old Mac Pro that internal clock battery expired I feel like a fool to stick with apple. To copy a cd I need an external drive and an adapter. I have wires all over my desk for power and a sound card. On top of that I can do less with the m1 than with the old Mac Pro and have spent hundreds on adapters etc.

Quicktime does not work with the most popular web camera on the market? My iPhone will not work as a web cam without the onscreen indicators showing? Give me a break. Why can I not do simple things that I could do in 20:years ago with my computer? I know when I have been screwed. Apples think differently has become a consumer state of alternative reality and willing giving apple direct access to your bank account. I am woke.

Thanks for trying to help. I have a MacBook Air m1. Therefore there are not any fans. All power settings set to never.

shouldn’t apple be trying to find a solution? Maybe find a technology that allows one to use the iPhone as a webcam or live camera without the displays showing. Maybe a real doc like I had twenty years ago on a IBM and Panasonic tough book. If you do. Ot have a good docking situation don’t put the option to hookup up stuff with adapters. Good grief!

>> Here is a step-by-step solution to this bug that works more than 75% of the time.

Unfortunately, solutions that work 75% of time fail the other 25% of the time. When I'm trying to record an hour-long lecture in front of an audience, I don't want to find out after the fact that this particular time Quicktime decided to crash again, and all my work has been lost.

Trying to outsmart a major bug in someone's code is (in my opinion) an exercise in futility. No matter what clever workaround you come up with, you'll never be certain if it will fail yet again. Apple needs to fix this problem in Monterey. I urge everyone on this thread to file a bug report with Apple.

Well, this is absolute frustration. Way to go Apple. Tinkered around with sh** enough and made something fail that used to work. Leave it alone. That said, please fix it. This thread proves the attention to it is nil. Over 20 years a Mac user and the last 5 have been terrible. Taking control away from the user more and more.

Unlike most here, I was having no issues at all with the QT 10:55(6) issue UNTIL I upgraded to Monterey 12.1, not Monterey itself, but the most current update as of this post. Today is the first time I have ever had a problem. After spending all morning doing most of the tests suggested in this thread, I found this thread. SMFH.

Seriously, tired of Apple "making things better" that worked perfectly fine.
