Quicktime video recording stops at 10:55 in MacOS Monterey

Since upgrading to MacOS Monterey, Quicktime Player now stops recording at 10 minute and 55 seconds. I can no longer record any video segments longer than that. Prior to upgrading, I routinely recorded Quicktime videos in excess of one hour.

I've confirmed that this behavior occurs both with the built-in Mac camera and an external Logitech Brio camera.

It is resolved. I made the adjustment with the battery options... Make sure that all boxes in "Battery" option are unchecked except "Optimized battery charging" and "Show battery status in menu bar" and go to "Power Adapter" option to uncheck all boxes. It is important that "Turn display off after:" changed to "Never" on both "Battery" and "Power Adapter". I tested it and the camera recording ran more than 20 minutes without abruptly stopped it.

Here is a step-by-step solution to this bug that works more than 75% of the time. Tested on mid-2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, over thirty times.

  1. Download and install Macs Fan Control (only do this step once, then begin with step two each recording session).
  2. Restart your Mac before recording.
  3. Open Macs Fan Control and set both fans to Full Blast (remember this is after machine restart, I enable Full Blast immediately).
  4. Then record your camera, keeping Full Blast on throughout. I recommend using the High quality option, not maximum.

This usually works for me, and sometimes I can do multiple recording sessions (without machine restart) until the bug reappears. If the bug appears after trying these steps, try them again. May take two tries.

Since this bug appears to be related to power consumption and thermals, I also advise you follow these steps:

  1. Go to System Preferences > Battery > Battery > THEN move slider under “Turn off display after…” to Never.
  2. Go to System Preferences > Battery > Power Adapter > THEN move slider under “Turn off display after…” to Never.

One warning, however: I have had issues with recordings corrupting after 45-55 minutes. This is when there is no playback after 45 minutes as the file is stuck on one frame. Sometimes they refused to save, too. The only solution to this was to try again.

Currently zero issues on 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro (16 core GPU) with QuickTime, but will update if encountered.

Latest macOS on both systems.

I have the 2021 Macbook Pro, 16-inch, M1 Max laptop with the latest software of macOS Monterey (12.1) and I have this issue too when doing a movie recording.

After multiple conversations with the Apple Support over phone, we tried all these options (below) and a ticket was submitted to the engineer team (1/13/22). Apparently Apple hasn't supported the Quicktime application in awhile and hopefully they will now. Here's what I did and came to a conclusion of the issue on my end:

  • Movie recording is an issue for me when I set the quality to "maximum", stops at 10:55.
  • Reinstalled macOS Monterey. Recording still stops at 10:55 at maximum quality.
  • Created a test user. Recording still stops at 10:55 at maximum quality.
  • Doing a "high" quality recording worked passed 10:55, no stops. Did this test for each account (admin, user) for a total of 10 recording tests.

I also applied feedback to the apple.com/feedback site for Quicktime. Apparently was told by support by leaving comments there has a much higher success to be looked at than here. Fingers crossed on a solution soon.

Ok, so here's an update on mine. Not sure if this will be a quick fix for anyone else.

I have a mid-2015 15 inch MacBook Pro with the Dual Graphics (1.5 GB Intel/2GB AMD). So I have a USB 3.0 on the left and a USB 3.0 on the right. I've been recording off of a Video Capture device (It's an HDMI to USB 3.0 interface). I found that if I use the USB port on the right of the MacBook Pro, the recording stop at 10:55 every single time in Quicktime. However if I use the USB port on the left side of the MacBook Pro, there is no recording cap in Quicktime. (I'm specifying Quicktime as I don't have this issue in any other recording program on either USB port). I have to do some more testing, but that's what I have so far. If you're recording from a port (whether it be a thunderbolt port, USB-A, or USB-C port) try using a different port to test. Or if using a hub, try removing the hub to see if that makes a difference.

Looking forward to seeing if anyone has any different results.

I'm having the same issue as everyone in this thread. I have a 2020 six-core Intel iMac with 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD with nearly 300GB free, a 2TB external hard disk, Radeon Pro 5300 GPU and running the latest version of Monterey. My capture setup is a generic USB HDMI capture device, which connects to an AV-to-HDMI converter box that takes the video signal out of my VHS player.

I use QuickTime as a first step in digitizing VHS tapes. I record in QT first, then import it into Final Cut Pro for further editing and color adjustment. Before Monterey, I was able to record using this setup without issues. Last night during another recording session, I too discovered that QuickTime only records up to 10:55 with the vague error "Recording Stopped". What got recorded appears to be fine both audio and video right up to the 10:55 mark. I am running no other applications other than Amphetamine to keep the display from sleeping during recording. Amphetamine never interfered with the recording process under Big Sur. I have set recording quality to "High". I have yet to test and see if "Maximum" changes anything.

I reached out to Apple Support on Twitter, and they suggested creating a new user account as a troubleshooting step. I did that, and under that account, QT recordings don't suddenly stop at 10:55 like they do under my main account.

I have yet to test and see if this recording bug affects any capture device I connect to my iMac, though judging by the other replies, those devices may see the same issue. This is a rather severe QuickTime bug that only affects my main user account. It's rather annoying that I may have to possibly create either an entire separate user account just for recording video from my device or find a different app for recording.

I can record past 10:55 on QuickTime. It took some time trying to figure out why it would stop at that point but as long as I record on high rather than maximum quality it works fine. As far as all this VHS talk goes I have no idea what anyone is talking about, but when’s record using QuickTime with a Logitech streaming cam for my podcast it works fine on high quality

Now that I’ve been reading through a lot of these, it sounds as if most of the people posting in here that are having the 10:55 issue are not doing anything similar to what I am doing but the problem is the same. I’ve worked past it and haven’t had an issue in weeks, but unfortunately I can’t suggest the same steps that I used to resolve this since my issue was completely different from most of the people here.

But, if anyone is having this issue using an external webcam, I use a Logitech C920s streaming webcam ( see pictures below for the Logitech fiascos) to record the video content of my podcast using QuickTime and has an M1 MacBook Pro, and never had any issues with Big Sur using the M1 chip. Once Monterey came along and that’s when the you know what hit the fan. So, I assumed it was solely the Monterey OS that was causing it since Logitech claimed the C920s was completely compatible with MacOS 10.0.1 and higher. Then they changed their tune about 2 weeks later. That’s when I was able to figure out the 10:55 problem and this is how you fix it: RECORD ON HIGH, not MAXIMUM. That’s it.

These are the contradicting emails I received from Logitech two weeks apart from each other.

For me, I'm using a mid-2015 15" MacBook Pro, 2.8 Ghz i7 Processor. Currently running 12.2.1. Mine completely stops at 10:55 on Maximum settings. I can now record infinitely on High in QuickTime since 12.2 came out. Just for some reason the issue remains when I go to Maximum.

Hoping this issue is fixed. Been thinking about downgrading to Big Sur until it's reported this issue is fully fixed.

Mine is 2019 Macbook Pro. I did wipe out the hard drive and re-installed everything (no back up system). Before I made a change with the power preference. it still had a problem with 10:55 minute then I changed the power preference and it solved the problem. If you are considering to wipe out the format, but be sure to save data (not back up process by Time machine app), reinstall then change the power preference. Let me know how it goes. Good luck.
