After upgrading to Monterey MS Onedrive folder got inside iCloud

I've upgraded to Monterey from Big Sur and since this the physical location of the OneDrive folder has changed. Insted of having a folder inside my user folder, there's an alias, pointing to "/Users/leonardo/Library/CloudStorage/OneDrive-Personal".

But the strange thing is that instead of have a column with just Onedrive status icons, I've got the iCloud icon status on its right side too...

Not sure what it means. As I'm not able to locate the files on my iCloud drive. Neither locally, nor online through icloud.com.

If I click on this iCloud icons it changes to a downloading icon and sometimes it seams to complete the download, in others don't. (As you can see on this image, some icons have desapeared after i clicked on them and waited until what I think was a download...

Well, I'm concerned about file versions, as well as conflicts. I'm also not sure if my Onedrive files are being uploaded to iCloud.

I'd like them to stop...

My MS OD app version is 21.210.1010.0001 (Standalone)

Any advice?

Thanks

"It's a feature not a bug"

After updating Monterey 12.1, I experienced the same "issues" because of confusion for the change of location of the OneDrive folder. The Apple update followed by a OneDrive update, created the same situation for me.

Applause, to Roger1970 who posted (Nov15,2021) with earlier links...

Here is a January 12, 2022 post on the MSOneDrive Blog:

.... Ankiti Kirti - Inside the new Files On-Demand Experience on macOS:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-onedrive-blog/inside-the-new-files-on-demand-experience-on-macos/bc-p/3106689

Highlights:

    • The technology stack (based on Apple’s File Provider platform) is much better integrated with the operating system
    • The first version of Files On-Demand is built on several pieces of technology that are now deprecated.
    • The new Files On-Demand experience requires macOS 12.1 or later and a volume that is formatted with APFS.
    • With the new Files On-Demand experience, the sync root is always : ~/Library/CloudStorage/OneDrive-Personal.
    • As part of the upgrade, the sync root will be moved to this location. This location cannot be moved or changed and is controlled by macOS.

It is informative if you want details, and explains what MS meant by "Deeper Integration" :) The changes are for features, not an error...

I have a similar problem.

I upgraded my home iMac 2020 to Monterey a few days ago.

I use a work / institutional OneDrive account to keep my work synched between home & office Macs.

After the upgrade, on my home iMac, I started having problems with not being able to open files/documents located in my OneDrive folder. Initially I thought this was a permissions problem as when I tried to open a file from within MS Office apps I got an error message along the lines of "user doesn't have access permission". I rebooted but the problem persisted. I then noticed that my sidebar shortcut to OneDrive was gone, along with shortcuts to various OneDrive subfolders, and that OneDrive had not automatically restarted. I manually started OneDrive and found the preference "open at login" was unchecked. I corrected this and rebooted. Unfortunately that was not the end of the problem, as my OneDrive files now all appear to be located solely in the cloud, and are NOT accessible from local HDD storage. Strangely, this includes files that I generated in the past day or two and which I believed I had saved in my local OneDrive folder.

The OneDrive files which are no longer accessible locally amount to hundreds of Gb of data.

When I browse my OneDrive folder there are lengthy pauses as it attempts to populate the file menu from the cloud. When I try and open files, they do indeed have to be downloaded from the cloud. This is a marked change from before.

My OneDrive folder in my user folder is also now an alias. In my case this points to:

Interestingly, a quick check of my HDD storage suggests that my OneDrive files likely do still exist on the local drive - as >400Gb of "systems data" - they are just not accessible as user documents any longer.

This is a major degradation of OneDrive function.

I would love to get this problem fixed ASAP. It would take days to download all of these files from the cloud again, and there might be issues with file versions. I also previously had some files stored locally that had naming issues (illegal characters etc) that had prevented synching to the cloud, so these would be lost if I relied solely on restoring from cloud files. (I had always meant to fix the file names but there were many files, and was waiting for a tool to be developed that would do it for me)

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Rodger

Hi Rodger1970,

Thanks for your time to write your experience down and share with us. I deeply feel your pain. I have +400Gb on my OneDrive folder. Some of them are on the cloud only, but almost 300GB are/should be locally/instantly available. And now they behave as they're online only (even if I've created them 10 minutes a go).

The solution of disabling iCloud, or OneDrive would not work for me, as I use OneDrive mainly for work files and try to keep personal data on iCloud, as it synchronises more seamlessly with my iPhone/iPad...

So, I'm thinking about making a backup copy of all my OD files and then uninstalling it completely. And reinstalling and moving the files back. Not sure if the duo MacOS / OneDrive would behave as they used before Monterey, or if, by any chance, this is the expected behaviour MS intends for its Mac users. Because if it is, it sucks to the point I'm starting to think about an alternative.

Other things I'd like to add to this are:

1) OD is constantly crashing. My mac is always on with it running in the background and I've noticed its icon has been missing from the menu bar at least 3 times last week. Which forced me then to start it up manually. As I depend on it to keep some work folders updates and synchronised with team mates from around the world (different time zones). It's been hugely disappointing as people would only be able to reach me the following day just to tell me the shared folder they're looking for was empty on they side. :-(

2) I've found my Macintosh HD>users>[user name]>Library>Group Containers>XXXXXXXXXX.OneDriveStandaloneSuite>OneDrive - [account name].noindex>OneDrive - [account name] to not display Onedrive status icons on folders and files. which would make me less then trusting in order to start using this as my day to day file location. As it gets hard to know if a file has already uploaded. or if it's locally available as it should. And even the files that were supposed to be ONLY online, show up normally i this folder location. You only notice that they're not locally stored when double clicking them...

(I've tryed to relaunch Finder in order to make the icons show up (what usualy worked before) and it did not help in this "dark corner of the user tree"...

Any way, hope this helps any one and sincerely expect Apple and MS to do something about it. Because it seams that Apple is screwing MS in this case...

Thank you all

I just replied her this (hopefully she get's it):

Hi Lavina,

thanks for your response. I’m using OneDrive personal, this is the version I have installed. As it’s on Insider preview updates, I believe it’s more than up to date, no?

Regarding the rest of your message, I believe we’re not talking about the same issue. Your email seems to describe a solution for missing, or lost files. That’s not my problem here.

The problem is that, after upgrading my Mac to Monterey, OD started to behave differently from what I was used to:

      1. My OD folder content is now displaying OD status icons, as well as iCloud icons too (see image bellow).
      2. Whenever I try to open a file that was supposed to be stored locally, it has to be downloaded from the web first (not sure if it’s downloading from MS, ou iCloud servers).
      3. Content inside folders set to be “always kept on this device” became only available online soon after I create them. Before Mac OS Monterey, if I created a new file inside a folder that was supposed to be kept locally, the file would remain local.

So, my questions are:

      1. Is this the new expected behavior of OneDrive inside Monterey?
      2. If not, no to get back to the ways things were before?

Thanks

Nov 11, 2021 5:29 AM in response to rodger1970

Thanks for sharing, I'm feeling fortunate that I found this post. I'm suffering the same as Rodger1970 and diasleo – similar experiences and issues with MS OneDrive and a post-Monterey (12.0.1) install.

I am also at an institution (Sweden) – admin personnel, not research – not sharing OD data with colleagues.

I sync my files/folders between my work iMac (Retina 5K, 27" 2019), my work MacBookPro (mid-2015) with Big Sur 11.5.2 and my private MBPro (mid-2014) with Big Sur 11.5.2. Luckily I've not even tried to update my MBPros.

My issues seem to originate with my post-Monterey iMac. Problems consist of the inability of opening any OD-based files locally, regardless of application, new files/folders not syncing, botched icons and functions.

Sad to say that I've tried several times deleting everything and reinstalling OD, including long manual uninstall and finally killing supposed corrupted .DS_Store files with Terminal with I cannot recommend as a solution.

I'm down to my last 94GB on my private MBPro (1TB), so I'm not prepared to download my entire OD files/folders collection. Instead, I plan to cool down and work using MS SharePoint apps, manually uploading/downloading my daily files until a solution is presented here.

Keep posting Rodger1970 and diasleo!

here is the latest email exchange.....

Thank you for your response. Hope this email finds you well!

Upon reading your last response, it seems that your files are available online, i.e., not available locally on your device only available on OneDrive cloud. Hence, preview is not generated.

Whenever we try to access an online available file, it will be downloaded first. After the file is downloaded, we can preview it. This is an expected behavior. There is a setting in OneDrive, known as Files on Demand. When we disable the option, all files present in OneDrive cloud becomes available locally on our device.

You can try disabling Files on demand, but before you disable it, make sure you have enough local storage space available on your device. After disabling the option, OneDrive will start downloading from OneDrive cloud to your PC.

Below is the step-by-step process on how to disable files on demand.

      1. Right-click on OneDrive icon.
      2. Click on Preferences.
      3. Click Preferences tab.
      4. Click Turn-off files on demand.

If you don't want to disable files on demand, then select the OneDrive folder which is used by you frequently, right-click on it and select the option Always keep on this device. This option will make OneDrive to make those files available locally on your device.

When you see a green circle, with a tick mark on them, you can preview it by pressing Space bar.

Here is a helpful article: https://support.microsoft.com/office/save-disk-space-with-onedrive-files-on-demand-for-mac-529f6d53-e572-4922-a585-e7a318c135f0

Please let us know if there is any issue.

And my response:

Hi Tanmoy,

thanks for your response. Unfortunately your answer has nothing to do with my problem. I’d really appreciate if you could take your time and read all my email exchange with your support fellows. As the issues I’m having have all been extensively detailed in texts, screen captures and also on screen recordings.

I’m aware of how Files on Demand work. But, correct me if I’m wrong. There’s no way to disable this feature anymore. At least not with OD current version and Mac OS 12.0.1. Right? Also, this combination (Monterey and current OD), has ended the use of green circle icon as you mentioned. All the icons ar gray now (a kind of downgrade in my personal opinion). So, see, I use OneDrive for at least 5 years on Macs and the things I’m complaining are new. They’ve started right after upgrading to Monterey, as OneDrive Files and Folders changed how they used to work completely, as Microsoft implemented Apple File Provider Service.

As we’re now not closer from finding a solution than we were a week a go, I believe that maybe this problem involves some lesser known specifics about OneDrive running on Macs. Specially OD running on M1 Macs with MacOS Monterey with insider preview updates. I think that it would probably be a good idea to escalate this thread to a support manager that, maybe, has seen this kind of issues I’m having before.

Forgive me if all this is sounding obnoxious. But I’m really struggling with OneDrive now and it’s been a week and several different people on MS support trying to help, but all it seems to me is that none has grasped yet what the problem I’m facing is. By the way, there’s a thread on Apple Support community with several other MS OneDrive Users reporting the same problems. (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253301907) So, It’s not an isolated thing.

Thanks

I work with OneDrive on my Mac M1 and this update caused a huge mess with my data. I feel like I have the same files at three different places now. I have to be lucky now if I want to open a file from finder directly. Depending on where it is, it just won't open. Also, I don't understand which files I can preview now and which not. In any case, the experience is much worse. Is there a solid method to at least have the data again just in one place? Maybe disconnecting and deinstalling OneDrive and then delete all the local files from OneDrive before reinstalling it again?

I really hope the experience will get better again.

Nov 16, 2021 12:54 PM in response to Sorka1

Hi Sorka,

What version of OD are you using? I'm using 21.225.1031.0005 (Standalone) (insider preview program). And I've tried the uninstall, reinstall procedure (as I posted before here). And it did not work...

Thinking about giving up the insider preview version, in order to use the main one. But I'm not sure it supports M1 chips natively (that was the reason I started using it in the first place).

I got this reply from MS support today. Hopefully I'll receive some good news tomorrow...

WOW!!! The thoroughness of the responses is impressive! I just upgraded a mac mini M1 to Monterey and got the same the problems of the OneDrive folders being messed up that has been outlined above. I was upgrading to fix a timemachine problem which seemed to be fixed. Was easy to upgrade so I upgraded my intel based macbook pro 16 2019. It was a totally different upgrade experience with different approval screens even. The final result was NO problems with OneDrive. The intel version works exactly like before and keeps files in the same place and on the local hard drive. Looks like a messy solution for the M1 macs that I am regretting getting involved in.

Thanks for all the good homework!!

I'm having the same problem and could not find a solution so far... i need my onedrive folder back in my user-folder.

I tried reinstalling several times with clearing all traces of onedrive, installed the build from the app store, even found a website with older builds and tried an older one - no luck, onedrive immediately updates to the latest one.

Did anyone figure out how to revert / fix this issue yet?

Dec 15, 2021 1:48 PM in response to Adams075

I stand corrected, the Library/CloudStorage folder is holding 176.99 GB vs the GroupContainer OneDrive Standalone folder holding 202.38 GB.

This is very irritating as it appears to be double storage gumming up my hard drive.

I have had problems with Time Machine backups and I this makes it all suspect.

Everything is working at the moment but now I fear it could break too.

Thanks for raising the issue.

Dec 17, 2021 12:55 PM in response to Adams075

Wow... Installing a fresh new Mac OS, without recurring to Time Machine backup in order to get all the apps installed seems a little intense ;-)

I have so many things installed, so many digital certificates, profiles, and apps that it gives me some goosebumps thinking about doing it. I'll have to sleep over it and decide if I'm ready to do this.

But I'm glad the problem is solved for you and that it's a Monterey upgrading issue for OD and that the app itself is not bugged when installed on a new system.

Very happy to see that we're moving toward a solution for everybody here.

Happy weekend to you all.

Jan 5, 2022 9:01 AM in response to diasleo

Just updated OneDrive to 21.250.1205.0002 (standalone( (Apple silicon) (Preview) today, let's see if that changes anything.

One more thing that annoys me is that you don't get size information on the <user>/Library/CloudStorage/<my_OneDrive_folder>, so I can't really compare the on disk size with the magic shadow folder in /Users/<user>/Library/GroupContainersAlias/<some_number>.OneDriveStandaloneSuite/<my_OneDrive_folder.noindex>

Very annoying and I still think that cloud files on disk do take double the space...

Jan 5, 2022 12:03 PM in response to wbauer

Good for you!! I had to go through all the folders on the hard drive to find the duplicate folders/files. Having an external copy of my critical files made it a lot easier to delete the duplicates. I was a bit amazed to see all the folder syncing when I ran some test files. It wasn't instantaneous so I could watch the various folders do it. The Cloudstorage folder never reappeared in the Library after I deleted it and reinstalled Monterey OS and OneDrive. Do you know where that folder came from?
