After upgrading to Monterey MS Onedrive folder got inside iCloud

I've upgraded to Monterey from Big Sur and since this the physical location of the OneDrive folder has changed. Insted of having a folder inside my user folder, there's an alias, pointing to "/Users/leonardo/Library/CloudStorage/OneDrive-Personal".

But the strange thing is that instead of have a column with just Onedrive status icons, I've got the iCloud icon status on its right side too...

Not sure what it means. As I'm not able to locate the files on my iCloud drive. Neither locally, nor online through icloud.com.

If I click on this iCloud icons it changes to a downloading icon and sometimes it seams to complete the download, in others don't. (As you can see on this image, some icons have desapeared after i clicked on them and waited until what I think was a download...

Well, I'm concerned about file versions, as well as conflicts. I'm also not sure if my Onedrive files are being uploaded to iCloud.

I'd like them to stop...

My MS OD app version is 21.210.1010.0001 (Standalone)

Any advice?

Thanks

WOW!!! The thoroughness of the responses is impressive! I just upgraded a mac mini M1 to Monterey and got the same the problems of the OneDrive folders being messed up that has been outlined above. I was upgrading to fix a timemachine problem which seemed to be fixed. Was easy to upgrade so I upgraded my intel based macbook pro 16 2019. It was a totally different upgrade experience with different approval screens even. The final result was NO problems with OneDrive. The intel version works exactly like before and keeps files in the same place and on the local hard drive. Looks like a messy solution for the M1 macs that I am regretting getting involved in.

Thanks for all the good homework!!

I'm having the same problem and could not find a solution so far... i need my onedrive folder back in my user-folder.

I tried reinstalling several times with clearing all traces of onedrive, installed the build from the app store, even found a website with older builds and tried an older one - no luck, onedrive immediately updates to the latest one.

Did anyone figure out how to revert / fix this issue yet?

Thank you all for your replies. I wanted to get back with an answer sooner, but unfortunately I had no good news to share ;-)

After 2 weeks coming and going with low tier support representatives on MS, I finally got a call scheduled for today. This was after I had unistalled and installed office 2 times and OD 5 more times. All of them trying to get out of Insider Preview program. I had even to get a Windows machine to log into and see if I could opt out of Insider preview from Windows... (it didn't work...)

So, just 20 minutes before the time set for the call I received an email from MS, saying this issue is now a known bug for OD on Monterey and they're working on it, with a solution expected for early 2022 (as Adam075) mentioned. So, they would not call me.

That was not what I expected, but, at least I got to know that they were aware of the bug, something all previous representatives didn't have a clue.

But I still wanted to get out from the Insider Preview program, so I asked for some help in this matter.

First they've sent me to this link:

https://insider.office.com/en-us/handbook

I tried to do what it says, but, as for many guys here, the insider preview check box was checked and greyed out, so I could not uncheck it.

After some coming and going, they've toldo me to do this:

Open any Office app (except for OD)

Click Help > Check for Updates.

Select the Join the Office Insider program to get early access to new releases check box.

Clear the Join the Office Insider program to get early access to new releases check box.

Uncheck the last two boxes>>Shut down all office Apps and relaunch

__________________

I then tried again to open OD and this time the check box was unchecked and not greyed out. So I could uninstall it (version 21.245) and install again and get version 21.230.

It didn't solve the bug, but, at least I'm out of Insider Preview. Insider preview got us into this bug a month before the rest of OD users ;-(.

I'll keep an eye open to see when they release the solution on Insider preview, and maybe i'll opt in again... But, for now, I'm tired of all this mess with MS OneDrive and Monterey. They updated they software with very little regard for quality and user file safety. Keep wondering if I should be considering other solutions as Google Drive, Dropbox, or box...

Hope you all be good and they fix this soon!

Merry Xmas

I stand corrected, the Library/CloudStorage folder is holding 176.99 GB vs the GroupContainer OneDrive Standalone folder holding 202.38 GB.

This is very irritating as it appears to be double storage gumming up my hard drive.

I have had problems with Time Machine backups and I this makes it all suspect.

Everything is working at the moment but now I fear it could break too.

Thanks for raising the issue.

I was able to get my problem fixed--Here is what happened

I talked to a Microsoft specialist and he had not seen this problem before, he suggested reinstalling OneDrive as a solution.

Here is what I did:

1.made a copy of the files in the various OneDrive locations to an external hard drive so I have them safe.

2. Signed out of OneDrive, removed the app and Deleted ALL the OneDrive files in the many Library folder. This was a bit tedious looking for onedrive or microsoft.onedrive files. Not sure if I needed to do but did it anyway. There were lots squirreled away. Then finally took a breath and deleted the actual document files in the CloudStorage folder and the Group Container folder. There were two virtually identical sets of data. 2X the 202.3 GB of data files.

3. Installed a fresh copy of MacOS 12.1

4. Downloaded a new copy of OneDrive and set up a new OneDrive folder to sync.

4.5 Turned off Files on Demand in preferences

5. Let it download files from the OneDrive cloud and sync. I have a fast internet so it "only" took about 3.5 hours to down load 202 GB.

This process actually took less time than digging through the internet to find suggestions.

The clue was a brand new MacBook Air M1 running Monterey out of the box that sync'd with OneDrive flawlessly and didn't create the goofy files in the Library folder.

Must be a problem with the Monterey Upgrade from Big Sur and OneDrive integration…

Hope it stays fixed...and hope this may help.

Stay well

Wow... Installing a fresh new Mac OS, without recurring to Time Machine backup in order to get all the apps installed seems a little intense ;-)

I have so many things installed, so many digital certificates, profiles, and apps that it gives me some goosebumps thinking about doing it. I'll have to sleep over it and decide if I'm ready to do this.

But I'm glad the problem is solved for you and that it's a Monterey upgrading issue for OD and that the app itself is not bugged when installed on a new system.

Very happy to see that we're moving toward a solution for everybody here.

Happy weekend to you all.

Here is the good news.

It is possible to reinstall ONLY the MacOS and keep all the files, setting etc intact without requiring the Time Machine back up. Try just reinstalling the MacOS from the recovery screen. There are two options. reinstall the MacOS and erase and reinstall. I did the the reinstall only. To get to the recovery screen, you shut down the mac and restart it plus continue to hold down the power button until the recovery screen appears. I found lots of instructions on how to do this that are better than mine if you search for "reinstalling MacOS on Apple M1 computer."

My back up was corrupted these problems so I couldn't use it. Fortunately, I have another almost identical mac and time machine backup that was good so I had insurance.

The Monterey reinstall was easy and didn't take that long (under an hour and half) and I could see that everything was working.

One thing I forgot to mention, I signed out of Microsoft on one of my Office programs to make sure everything was off before I started this adventure. Just needed to sign in again after it was done.

Everything else was persevered nicely. I have Parallels 16 running with virtual machines too and they had zero problems restarting.

I am still a little amazed it worked as smoothly as it did.

Good luck!!

Having encounter similar issues with OneDrive since the MacOS Monterey upgrade last week, I have been reading this thread with interest. I am now finding that the files that I edit and save, are sometimes not being synched to OneDrive cloud, and I get error message that file is "unavailable" when I try to open in Finder.

Fortunately, I make regular backups of my files to an external hard drive, including everything on OneDrive, so I have only have lost some recent files. While it is possible that deleting OneDrive install and reinstalling on my Mac will fix the problem, I have decided that I cannot rely on OneDrive if Microsoft cannot manage an upgrade to the MacOS any better than this. I am now researching the best alternate cloud and file synching service to work with both Mac and Windows.

Dec 19, 2021 2:36 AM in response to Adams075

Wow, that's great news indeed.

I'm really not concerned about loosing the files, as I'm a backup freak and have at least to copies of everything... (one external hard drive + time machine and other online with Backblaze, which I recommend greatly). I was afraid of the time and effort it would take to install everything from scratch.

But I'm happy to know that a reinstall over the old version works as well! I'm definitely gonna try it. Thanks for all the input. This folks here are better then MS support ;-)

Good look for us all

Dec 21, 2021 2:44 AM in response to Adams075

Well,

I enjoyed a not so nice weekend reinstalling Mac OS Monterey. But things didn't go exactly as I'd love them to...

First I uninstalled MS Office completely, as MS instructs here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/uninstall-office-for-mac-eefa1199-5b58-43af-8a3d-b73dc1a8cae3

I even removed Office 365 license as told on another MS article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/how-to-remove-office-license-files-on-a-mac-b032c0f6-a431-4dad-83a9-6b727c03b193

Then I've checked for all office folders I could find (there were somes left, even following MS instructions), even the ones that were still creeping on "locations" on my finder sidebar. Emptied my trash bin and restarted the machine in order to reinstall Monterey.

I've re-installed Monterey over itself and after this, proceeded to re-install MS office with OD. But things now seems to be as they were before. I tried to select all my folders and force OD to download them, by choosing "always keep on this device". But I've kept getting a communication error message telling me to try later. So I've spent the last 2 days trying to make sure all those cloud icons telling me my files were only online, were gone. I did this by opening the files and thus forcing to have them downloaded, and by trying to copy a folder to another location (the later almost never worked). Today I finally got rid of all the cloud icons. I briefly believed I had all my files locally available again.

So I navigated thru some of my folders and hit space bar in order to preview them... Most were downloaded, but a large, random amount no. I could just preview their thumbnails... And more terrible, this time there was no cloud icon telling me which ones were physically on my SDD and which were just an alias...

So, I cannot know how many and which of my files exist now only on MS cloud... I guess the only safe form for me to be sure I can copy and backup all my files is downloading them on a Windows machine...

And this is a bug I could notice. Not sure if there are any other problems that put my files integrity in risk.

I hope this subpar and dreaded behaviour is solved early on 2022. Otherwise MS will be loosing a client..

PS. I could try to do a clean Monterey install, and then setting up all my system again, instead of re-installing it over itself. But as of now, I'm not sure it would help, but I'm pretty certain it would take a lot of time and patience....

I really expected to get with this done for Xmas... probably not.. :-(

Thank you all

Just updated OneDrive to 21.250.1205.0002 (standalone( (Apple silicon) (Preview) today, let's see if that changes anything.

One more thing that annoys me is that you don't get size information on the <user>/Library/CloudStorage/<my_OneDrive_folder>, so I can't really compare the on disk size with the magic shadow folder in /Users/<user>/Library/GroupContainersAlias/<some_number>.OneDriveStandaloneSuite/<my_OneDrive_folder.noindex>

Very annoying and I still think that cloud files on disk do take double the space...

Jan 5, 2022 9:47 AM in response to diasleo

We’re you able to make the changes to reinstall OneDrive that I outlined below? I found it very tedious to go through every folder in the Library folder and delete all the OneDrive files of any kind to get it clean. May have been overkill but since I did it and checked the option to keep local copies of files, everything is syncing properly.

Jan 5, 2022 10:23 AM in response to Adams075

I wanted to start from current state, so I did not remove anything, did not clean files and did not reset OneDrive!

Interestingly, the 21.250.xxx version now does NOT increase size in the GroupContainer folder anymore - yeah!!

All files I mark for local are properly downloaded in the corresponding OneDrive folder inside CloudStorage and do not take space inside the GroupContainers! So finally, files don't seem to take twice the space anymore - huge improvement! What is now needed is either OneDrive to really clean up what does not need to be there - or I'll toy around with deleting the corresponding files in GroupContainers and then resetting OneDrive... Risky...

I still don't get why the OneDrive.noindex in GroupContainers needs to exist when the structure is in the CloudStorage folder anyway. Likely a remnant of the former implementation that did not use the CloudStorage folder/API.
