iPhone 13 Pro loses bluetooth connection to car 2-8 minutes after starting a phone call

I recently purchased a new iPhone 13 Pro (then exchanged for an iPhone 13 Pro Max) to replace my iPhone XR. Here is the info on the problem I am seeing for your developers:

Hardware: iPhone 13 Pro Max, running iOS 15.0.2

Car: 2016 Toyota Avalon

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Car
  2. Allow phone to connect with car via bluetooth.
  3. Start a phone call
  4. Connection between the car and phone fails anywhere from 2-8 minutes after the call starts.
    1. The phone call continues on the phone, but the car thinks the call has ended. After this point bluetooth functionality no longer works properly until I restart the car.

Other details:

- The phone has no issues playing bluetooth audio to the car. Issue only happens on phone calls.

- My old iPhone XR did not have this problem, but was not running iOS 15.

Steps I have taken to fix the problem:

  1. Stopped/started bluetooth service on iPhone
  2. Enabled then disabled Airplane mode on iPhone
  3. Re-paired the iPhone to the car after forgetting bluetooth settings on both devices.
  4. Restart iPhone
  5. Force restart iPhone
  6. Updated software on car
  7. Reset all settings on iPhone
  8. Disabled 5G (settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings -> Voice & Date = LTE)
  9. Exchanged my iPhone 13 Pro for an iPhone 13 Pro Max, still have the issue

The iPhone is unusable for calls in my car which is really frustrating. Hopefully someone out there has seen something like this and has a solution/workaround. Or maybe this will make it to the developers and they can try and fix the issue.

Experiencing similar problems with a 13 mini and 2011 Mercedes. In my case, the Bluetooth problems are intermittent. At first I thought it was cell signal fading in and out but after close inspection I confirmed the signal strength was fine and could switch to speakerphone and have great quality. For me, the Bluetooth problems can appear immediately or hours later (during a long drive). I can be having a conversation and then loose my microphone and/or voice. It never completely disconnects, but the call becomes non-functional and I have to hang up and replace the call. Tried a variety of measures to reset everything and still the problems continue.

Since iOS 15 and me getting an iPhone 13 PM, the device no longer auto-connects to my car stereo. It's an aftermarket Alpine. I have to manually select it in Bluetooth settings and re-pair it every time I get into the car. It's saved in my devices, I can see it, but it never auto-connects like it used to and is expected to.

edit: if I turn off the car and then back on, I have to reconnect/re-pair it manually again. Quite the inconvenience.

Well, part of me is happy to hear I don't need to deal with the headache of calling tech support at Apple because it is a known problem and apparently no fix. But the other part of me is quite annoyed that it is a known problem of several months and no fix has been made.

I just wanted to add I have the exact same issue, my Bluetooth calls drop within 2-8 mins (although music apps are not dropped via Bluetooth) and I have reset everything (I will not go through the headache of a factory reset!), re-paired my Bluetooth, and all of the other suggestions including paying $75 to have the software on my 2017 Toyota Tundra updated by the dealer and have the latest and greatest IOS 15.1.1 update on my phone - nothing fixed it.

Very irritating given the exorbitant cost of the Iphone 13 Pro and it doesn't work as describe!!! (Another class action suit could be on the horizon like the battery throttling of the Iphone 6 and 6+).

I have had a similar issue with my iPhone 12 from day one that I’ve bought it.

the problem is with the Porsche Cayenne original PCM.

My X used to work perfectly and my wife’s iPhone XR also connects and works without any issues.

every time I get in to the car, the Bluetooth connects, then just randomly disconnects after a minute and just keeps doing that while I drive. Than if I’m on a call, the car Bluetooth shows the call has ended but the call is actually still connected on the phone.

I’ve opened multiple cases with Apple but they never helped. Just continued running tests every time with no resolve. And say that the engineers are aware of the issue and working to fix it. It’s been a year now.

And now they have completely stopped responding.

Never expected such low class service from apple.

Was able to get my phone connected to the hands free in my car and make an outgoing call. However, when I hung up, the car thought the phone was still connected (in a call) and wouldn’t disconnect. I could make another call, but the hands free wouldn’t connect because it still thought it was in the previous call. Does that make sense?

Apple did call me from this thread but I didn’t have time to troubleshoot at the moment. They wanted to start logging and collect info. Not sure if they will call back.

Also same issue here with an iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone SE 2 and a BMW 335i from 2013 since iOS 15. Neither iOS 15.1 nor 15.1.1 fixed my problems with the bluetooth handsfree connection. The problem isn't limited to the iPhone 13 (Pro) but more to iOS 15.

The recipient understands me loud and clear, but I only hear it very softly with a strong crackle. And after a few minutes the car loses the bluetooth connection. I have repaired the devices several times without any effects, while my old iPhone 6 with iOS 12.5.5 works fine.

I know its frustrating as I have the same problem with my Tundra. But I did speak to a rep on the phone and they went through some pretty extensive troubleshooting steps with me. They took logs and tested it with me over the phone.

They will be reviewing the logs and hopefully a fix is on its way. Maybe its something simple that can be quickly patched!

Yes! I have an iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 15.1.1 and a 2021 Toyota Tacoma. I've only had the truck for less than 2 months so it's hard to determine if it is iOS 15 or what because I remember having these problems from the beginning when I got the truck. either way, I can NOT USE MY PHONE IN MY TRUCK at all because whether it is on my AirPod Pro in 1 ear or on the handset or on phone speaker or on the truck speaker, it CONSTANTLY every 5 seconds OR LESS jumps between each of the 4 options!!!!!!!!!!!! it is un-freaking believable! Please Apple and Toyota get together and fix this! On a side note, I have seen many little things that I am hoping iOS 15.2 will fix and God willing this truck issue will make the cut.

To my understanding from engineering perspective, this is a Hardware issue rather then a Software issue, while iPhone X, iPhone XS & iPhone 11 with the same iOS 15.1.1 can connect to the Bluetooth and have no issue at all in other hand the latest flagship smartphone iPhone 13 Pro Max can’t do the same operation under the same iOS 15.1.1 then my first thought goes to Bluetooth cheap that can not handle the process.

Dear Apple I guess the chance is high that you have to open a recall program for those iPhone due to faulty Bluetooth cheap.

let’s hope for the best and I hope I’m wrong and is Software part and gets fixed soon.

Hi, i have the same problem between my iphone Xr/iOS15.1 and My Mazda CX-5 2014.

Whatever the step i did for resetting all, during a facetime audio or phone call the bluetooth don't work or cut during the call or swith itself to the phone and comeback to the car few second later!! Like that until i'm to switch off the call!

It's so frustrating!

I have a 2016 Toyota Highlander with CarPlay. With my iPhone 12 running IOS 14 I never had an issue. Ever since upgrading to iOS 15 I have had issues with connecting with the car Bluetooth. I’ve tried several times to delete the Bluetooth and reconnect and hard starting my phone and nothing seems to fix it. Every time I am on a phone call I get constant error messages that my phone does not support the Bluetooth accessory then it will eventually cut the call off. It is completely frustrating. I put in a complaint to Apple directly
