iPhone 13 Pro loses bluetooth connection to car 2-8 minutes after starting a phone call

I recently purchased a new iPhone 13 Pro (then exchanged for an iPhone 13 Pro Max) to replace my iPhone XR. Here is the info on the problem I am seeing for your developers:

Hardware: iPhone 13 Pro Max, running iOS 15.0.2

Car: 2016 Toyota Avalon

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Car
  2. Allow phone to connect with car via bluetooth.
  3. Start a phone call
  4. Connection between the car and phone fails anywhere from 2-8 minutes after the call starts.
    1. The phone call continues on the phone, but the car thinks the call has ended. After this point bluetooth functionality no longer works properly until I restart the car.

Other details:

- The phone has no issues playing bluetooth audio to the car. Issue only happens on phone calls.

- My old iPhone XR did not have this problem, but was not running iOS 15.

Steps I have taken to fix the problem:

  1. Stopped/started bluetooth service on iPhone
  2. Enabled then disabled Airplane mode on iPhone
  3. Re-paired the iPhone to the car after forgetting bluetooth settings on both devices.
  4. Restart iPhone
  5. Force restart iPhone
  6. Updated software on car
  7. Reset all settings on iPhone
  8. Disabled 5G (settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings -> Voice & Date = LTE)
  9. Exchanged my iPhone 13 Pro for an iPhone 13 Pro Max, still have the issue

The iPhone is unusable for calls in my car which is really frustrating. Hopefully someone out there has seen something like this and has a solution/workaround. Or maybe this will make it to the developers and they can try and fix the issue.

All,

I am happy to announce that Apple Support contacted me this morning to inform me of update 15.2. This update has fixed my problem so far. No more disconnects during phone calls in my Tundra.

Please do this update and post your results here.

Thank you Apple Support for listening to our feedback!

There is a seperate thread also related to this issue. I have been working exclusively with an advisor and have had advanced diagnostic bluetooth logs submitted to apple engineers that I have been waiting to hear back on for about 3 weeks now.

Apple has a serious Bluetooth bug in the 13 and 13 Pro that for some reason they are not acknowledging. I basically cannot use my AirPods or car bluetooth for work calls since it is so unreliable. I witnessed a car accident about a month ago and called 911 using my car bluetooth and had the static/interference noise while talking to the dispatcher. It consistently lasts for about 10-15 seconds.

here is where I have been posting my updates related to all of the Bluetooth issues I have had since I got the 13 Pro in October. I've had my phone replaced and it did not fix it. Definite OS bug between Bluetooth and the "Phone" app.

Not sure if you’ve figure out the issue yet, but I was having the same problem all of a sudden with my new iPhone 13 mini pairing to my Mazda3 2018. There was no issue before and I don’t believe there was any phone update either between now and yesterday.

After several tries and fails, I did a hard reset on my entertainment system (hold buttons music, nav, and volume dial down until the screen resets) and once it turned on… I unpaired everything again and reconnected.

Everything’ works now.

I really hope this helps you!

I went through a couple of weeks of back and forth with them to troubleshoot my issue. Then 15.4.1 came out and the problem was solved. I can only surmise that the engineers got a handle on my issue, found a bug and fixed it. I have no proof of that other than the fact that I’ve had this issue for quite some time and it got to be important to me so I created a support request.

I have another suggestion that may help with the issue.

Route and automatically answer calls on iPhone - Apple Support

I have seen this setting help with Bluetooth headphone call audio routing issues but am not super confident that a car’s Bluetooth connection would be seen as a headset.

Answering the call on the iPhone’s screen may be defaulting to use the phone receiver but the audio is forwarding via Bluetooth. iOS may then be disconnecting Bluetooth after the music is paused for a period of time not recognizing the active call.

A manual workaround that could help, if that setting doesn’t, would be answering a call like normal, then tapping Audio to select Bluetooth, while the call is active.

I think majority of the issues with calls disconnecting from bluetooth within 5 - 8 minutes on a newer device (iphone) is a result of compatibility issue with the car's stereo system.

Review link below to find the make/model of vehicle (toyota), year and the manufacturer of the device. It will show what device models are compatible. Try different years and you'll notice the later car years have the latest iphones shown as being compatible, ie iphone 13

Hope this helps

The issue is there since iPhone 12 and 14.4. See https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/672553?page=2

Also there's another thread on Apple forums:

And yeah I have the problem too. Volvo XC60 2009 and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

For me it started last year with the iPhone 12 on 14.4. then I switched back to the XS Max because of this issue.

My old iPhone XS Max on iOS 15.1 works just fine till this day. So it's not iOS 15 related issue. It's probably just that more people upgraded to newer iPhone's this year.

The good news is I am currently working with apple to share my IPhone 13 analytics and blue tooth information with them.

From Tuesday 11-30-2021 PM they monitored my phone to Wednesday 12-1-2021 AM .

Results: 20 instances with screenshots of duration of phone calls, (some less that 30 secs apart), on LTE or 5G & time, I uploaded the analytics to them yesterday morning.

Today I received an email asking if Tuesday 12-12-21 they could contact me again to provide more analytics.

They ARE aware of this issue and are trying to get more information to fix this issue. She also told me that they have other iPhone 13 users doing the same. Hopefully it won’t be long before they have a fix!!

info: my issues are dealing with connecting to a hands free Blue Parrot head set, Apple airpod pros , and my 2018 Toyota Tundra.

The quick fix I’ve been using is toggling from iPhone, speaker, (Bluetooth connected device) headset,AirPods, vehicle, ect. Until I hear it reconnect to the Bluetooth device.

It's not possible to try different phone app. iPhone has only one phone app, you can't replace stock app.

But I tried calls in other apps like signal, whatsapp, telegram...and it's the same issue, bluetooth disconnects.

It's not issue with phone app but with bluetooth in iPhone's with 5G (12 and 13 models). Because on older models my bluetooth works completely fine in my Volvo car. It's just the stupid iPhone 13 with those issues. I hope apple release a fix (hopefully iOS 15.3) or recalls those faulty iPhones soon!
