Bluetooth pairing between iPhone and Mac Mini M1 "not supported"

Hi. I'm unable to connect my iPhone (iOS 15.1) to my Mac Mini M1 (MacOS 12.0.1). The initial pairing seems to work as the code verification pops up on both the iPhone and the Mac, however it never actually connects and I get the following message:

Connection Unsuccessful

"Name of my device" is not supported.

Forget Device (button)

Has anyone run into same issue?

I'm not sure it has anything to do with iCloud.

My iMac M1 will not connect to my iPad or iPhone nor will it allow my iMac to unlock using my Apple Watch. This all seems to have been a problem since the 12.1 update.

In the Bluetooth settings on the iMac I can pair the iPad and iPhone but both immediately go to 'not connected', if I then select 'connect' it shows connected for around 2 seconds and drops back to 'not connected'. Clicking the option to unlock the iMac with my watch leaves it twirling for a while before becoming unchecked again. (The watch and the iPhone are paired with each other with no problems)

This is becoming frustrating.

I never said you didn't have a problem. I was only pointing out that you were looking for the solution in the wrong place. As we've now settled that the problem is not your ability to pair over BT, I would suggest that you start your own thread describing your problem. You're far more likely to get effective help that way.

Best of luck.

my Iphone will not connect wirelessly to my new Mac Air with M1 chip

I understand that you can't connect your phone to your Mac using BT. What I'm asking is what you're trying to accomplish by connecting the two devices? Sharing files? Using an internet connection? Something else? There are ways to do these things but, until you say what you're trying to do, no one can know what instructions to give you.

There are still reasons to pair a computer and the phone via bluetooth.

For example, If you are having intermittent internet issues via your landline, you can use tethering via bluetooth as an automatic fall-over-backup to maintain internet connectivity. Note how this is much better than WiFi tehtering because you still have access to your WiFi LAN (eg. printer) without having to switch between access points.

I could achieve the same result via USB, but a wireless solution is much more convenient.

Using the phone's personal hotspot feature over BT is supported.

That is assuming the iPhone and the Computer are able to connect - something which used to be the case, but now bizarrely fails with the current software.

BT pairing between iPhones and Macs has never been supported or needed, PERIOD.

IdrisSeabright is correct and Lanny is flat out wrong. BT pairing between iphone and macs has been supported until the recent bugs were introduced (at least I hope it is not by design) - and useful.

I have the exact same issue with the iPhone 13 promax and my iMac and as soon as you acknowledge the pairing code it says not connected and it says the iMac is not supported

two hours with Apple support and then another to the next day with a supervisor that screen captured everything on the phone and the iMac and went to engineering and had no solution.

The odd thing is everything seems to work it just says not connected

So I’m brand new to Apple but I’ve updated both iPhone and MacBook and tried a number of reset solutions found on web and still I can connect anytime to all my various non apple products via Bluetooth but iPhone and Mac won’t connect. My question is this however because I don’t understand why…

is many someone from Apple supposed to chime in here at some point to say here’s the fix or we don’t have this worked out or whatever? Where’s Apple response to this?

I had the similar problem with iPhone 13 promax and seven year old iMac and it never said it was pairing it said unsupported but all of the functions seem to work once both have been signed into iCloud. AirDrop iMessages the phone calls on either one everything actually seems like it’s working fine but it always says not connected did the pairing was unsuccessful and yet it gives the pairing number and I spent three days with Apple support and they could not understand it either

You don't need to pair your phone and Mac using BT in order for AirDrop or other continuity features to work. You only need to have BT enabled on both devices.

I had the same issue but once I signed both machines into the iCloud everything seem to be working in other words I could use airdrop telephone on either machine and pictures iMessages and everything seem to be in sync immediately

so the bottom line is I think the phone does connect but it just says it doesn’t connect and also after three days with the Apple support they didn’t have any idea but eventually agreed with me because everything worked they even screenshot it my phone and computer and sent it to engineering and they had no answer
