USB 3.0 Hub Broken on Mac OS Monterey 12.0.1

Since upgrading to Mac OS Monterey, solely the USB 3.0 port on my Hub has stopped working. Power is allowed to pass through to connected devices, however the transfer of data has stopped working.

Everything was working on Mac OS Big Sur, and it is only since updating to Monterey it has stopped working. I have found several reports on the developer forums for Mac OS stating this was an issue since around Beta 3 for some users, and there are reports on Reddit of other people having this issue.

Apple Support were useless and told me to bring my Mac in for repair (despite it only being 4 days old and the issue happening directly after an update) I took the Hub back to the place of purchase and they tested it on a Mac with Big Sur installed and it worked. When plugging it into another Mac that had been updated to Monterey the 3.0 Port stopped working.

It's an Advent Hub, not some dodgy knockoff one of Amazon. It worked absolutely fine prior to the Monterey upgrade.

Now when plugging in my iPhone via USB 3.0 or my Mouse, all that happens is the LED's on my mouse light up (but not the laser) or my iPhone charges, but won't connect to my Mac.

Oddly, both the HDMI and USB-C port on the hub continue to work as expected.

Same problem here. MacBook Pro 2017 Intel. VAVA hub perfectly working with Big Sur as well as the other 3 USB C ports with several peripherals (external SSD's etc.).

With Monterey installed Saturday:

no USB data exchange on hub

no USB C port working with two different peripherals.

I spent Sunday afternoon to happily downgrade back to Big Sur.

Everything is working perfectly again.

Ohhhh Apple .....

I sadly feel like Apple has finally gone to amateur hour. This was a known bug in the Beta version of Monterey and yet they still released this with this major flaw. We don't have time to wait for them to work on this. This is the kind of thing that can render many people near useless.

They have already cut the number of USB-C ports with the newer mac book pro's (M1's specifically). USB-C is already next to impossible to stack multiple items using hubs (unlike USB 3.0). I think 4 were the most USB-C's I could find at the $160 range in the USA and one of them was to power the hub and one to go to the mac, which means you only got 2 ports out of it. Hubs like these are hard to find and very expensive.

So the fact that most of us are dependent on hubs as part of our lives now, why would they release this knowing it is a problem that would cause this much havoc on the users?

So, we now have USB 3.0 ports that have stopped working, many external drives inoperable, and have little to no way to daisy chain enough hubs to function normally. I have never written anything with such frustration about Apple before, but this is was just wrong. This was too big of a problem to let this one slip by and not be upfront about this. I tore my studio up trying to figure this out and then I saw these articles explaining it: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/10/29/monterey-usb-hub-issues-reported/, https://www.imore.com/usb-hub-not-working-macos-monterey-youre-not-alone, https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/10/29/apples-macos-monterey-causes-problems-with-some-usb-devices-hubs

I am for the first time, not happy with the way Apple has handled an issue with their products. And I am a patient person, now without external hard drives, a studio mic for live streams, and the ability to connect simple devices to interact with my 13" M1 2020 MacBook (supposed) Pro.

It's not fix, but this might be a go around until a 12.1 updated to fix the USB-C hubs is released. I'm using a MBP 2019. After wasting a weekend, i found a possible solution that doesn't make my system crash. The Monterey 12.01 made my Anker Apex basically a brick.

I randomly discovered if you are using an external USB hub that has a PD port, don't use the PD port to power your computer. When i used the hub with power it kept crashing my MBP. I then plugged the Apple wall wart directly into the MBP, then i'm using a unpowered USB-C hub (it has a PD port, but i'm not using it) for all my accessories (Web Cam, Keyboard, audio output). Also, i have an external monitor plugged directly into the MBP. I tried a second HDMI monitor plugged into hub, but it also crashed the machine. From what i can tell, you have to plug monitors directly into the computer's USB-C port, and if you want to use a hub don't use the PD port (Also, don't plug any monitor into the hub). My other USB 3.0 devices work fine in the unpowered hub.

This morning, my MBP crashed twice in 30 min when was using the PD port, but since i made the switch above it's done fine. It's just alot of wires all over my desk. Good Luck, Apple fix the issue

I have several USB hubs and USB docks (hub + HDMI + Ethernet + ...). All of these work fine on an Intel Mac still running Big Sur. Everything works fine and as expected. Yet they all fail in some way on a M1 Mac running Monterey.

USB-C ports work as expected (with any speed the hub supports over USB-C), so do HDMI ports and network ports and so on. Yet USB-A ports all fail unless they are USB 2.0 only ports, those in fact do work (USB 2 means 0.48 Gbit/s or 480 Mbit/s). But USB 3 ports, no matter if 3.2 Gen 1 (aka 3.1 Gen 1, aka 3.0; those with 5 Gbit/s) or 3.2 Gen 2 (aka 3.1 Gen 2; those with 10 Gbit/s) have power but no data transfer is possible via those ports (hardware is not detected at all, does not show up in System Information). Again, these ports work just fine on my other Mac.

I also have plain USB 3 hubs and if plug them in directly using a USB-C to USB-A adapter, they work as expected. The issue is only experienced with hubs/docks that have an USB-C connector and USB 3.x A-ports on the hub.

It plays no role if they are active or not. Active hubs have the issue regardless if self-powered or bus-powered. And for docks that can pass through power (USB-PD), it makes no difference if they are passing through power or not.

I have only one tiny dock, that has an USB-C connector, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 A-ports, one USB-C port for PD or as a normal port, and a HDMI port and this is the only one, where the USB 3 ports actually do work on Monterey. Even when powering via PD and using HDMI all at the same time. However, it isn't stable on Monterey. After several hours of use, sometimes connected devices disconnect or the dock starts to act strange and then I must unplug it form all power, wait and re-plug it to get it working again. Again, I cannot remember that this has ever happened on my Intel Mac with Big Sur.

I don’t think you follow what I’m saying.

Multiple Display Model M1 Macs running Big Sur we’re tested and worked fine with the Hub.

The one M1 Mac that had been updated to Monterey on display showed the exact same behaviour as my device.

HDMI working, USB-C working but no USB 3.0.

Why would I return my device, when initial testing (albeit limited) points to a software issue over hardware issue?

See here for reports of this in early beta’s which were never fixed.

I have also had this issue.

Circumstances:

2020 M1 MacBook pro

Totu USB-c hub(generic amazon) model TT-HB002D

Dell MOCZUL laser mouse (wired)

Onn wireless mouse (manufacturer number:100009056)

Dell KB113p wired keyboard

Acer R240HY 1080p monitor

What did I do:

On Mac OS Big Sur, I had no issues using all of these - even simultaneously. After updating to Monterey, however, only the monitor worked with these adapters. In troubleshooting, I began by restarting my computer multiple times (there is no way to reset the PRAM manually anymore, and the SMC has been removed entirely if I recall correctly). When this did not work, I decided to see if the USB ports on the hub worked at all anymore, so I plugged in a flash drive. This appeared as readable on the desktop a few moments later (although somewhat longer than expected). Next, I decided to see if it was a power issue, so I plugged in a USB light strip. This also worked. At this point, I am very confused. I also tried charging/reading photos from my iPhone, but this had the same luckless result as the keyboard and mouse. I know that it has nothing to do with the ports on my mac because I can charge through both of them still, I have HDMI output for my monitor (I haven't had any issues with this, thankfully), and I am able to use my mouse or keyboard by using a simple USB-C to USB-A adapter (the short kind that comes with android phones or that you can buy on Amazon for $5). This would be fine, but I would like to be able to use more than one USB accessory at once. I will be ordering an Anker adapter to see if it fares any better... if not, I will return it.

One more thing: I was able to take the USB-C male to USB-A female adapter mentioned above, pair it with an inverse version (USB-A male to USB-C female), plug the hub into the second adapter, and finally use my mouse and keyboard... The problem here is that I lose the HDMI capabilities at this point.

Clearly, there is not a hardware issue with any of my equipment... this is a bug that will have to be fixed in a future update. I would like to hear from some other people who might possess Apple or Anker hubs. Do they work, or is this an issue for everyone and all dongles?

If you have any questions or would like me to test further, I am happy to help!

I am having this same problem with my ikling 15-in-1 hub I have tried it on my Mac desk top and works fine but not on my Mac Book Pro with the M1 chip worked fine till I updated to Monterey as soon as I did that the hub stopped working properly. The hub gets power to all the ports but no data transfer at all no either net plug working. the problem seams to be with the M1 chip set the Mac desk top is running Monterey and no issues the desk top dose not have the M!1 chip. when will we see a fix on this?

Just to add, a close look at a lot of these odd named USB docks/hubs one will see that a lot have exactly the same ports in exactly the same position, just with a different case wrapping the same circuit board. Since they are all using the same chipsets and one exhibits an issue, then all the variations will likely see the problem.

Unfortunately, most of the vendors of these hubs have no expertise or even knowledge of what is going on inside and cannot provide any help or firmware updates, if it is even possible with these designs.

FWIW, I have a Belkin Multimedia Hub connected to my M1 MacBook Air. On on of its USB ports I have an SSD attached. The other USB port, I have a Sabrent 7 port USB 3 hub connected with 2 SSDs and 1 HDD connected to it. The hub alohas power passing to my MacBook Air. All 4 drives are working perfectly well with one being a Time Machine drive which is being accessed every hour. The drives: 2 Samsung 500GB T7, one SSD in a Startech Usb 3 enclosure, a Seagate 500 GB HDD.

So, not all hubs are failing to work and not all drives are failing to be recognized and not all systems are unable to stack hubs.

What hub are you using? Is it one of the zillion look alike or a different wrapper around the same port configurations? Or is it mad by a company that is known for building docks and hubs of literal decades.

So I have aquired a second replacement. It is the QIYO 9 in one from amazon (Link below). This adapter works for three USB peripherals and at least the HDMI as well. I do not know if you could connect multiple monitors, but it is a possibility. Out of curiosity, has anyone tried the 12.1 public beta? Do you know if it fixes this at all? Time will tell, but hopefully there will be a solution by the end of the year. Right now, Monterey feels sluggish and buggy overall.
