USB 3.0 Hub Broken on Mac OS Monterey 12.0.1

Since upgrading to Mac OS Monterey, solely the USB 3.0 port on my Hub has stopped working. Power is allowed to pass through to connected devices, however the transfer of data has stopped working.

Everything was working on Mac OS Big Sur, and it is only since updating to Monterey it has stopped working. I have found several reports on the developer forums for Mac OS stating this was an issue since around Beta 3 for some users, and there are reports on Reddit of other people having this issue.

Apple Support were useless and told me to bring my Mac in for repair (despite it only being 4 days old and the issue happening directly after an update) I took the Hub back to the place of purchase and they tested it on a Mac with Big Sur installed and it worked. When plugging it into another Mac that had been updated to Monterey the 3.0 Port stopped working.

It's an Advent Hub, not some dodgy knockoff one of Amazon. It worked absolutely fine prior to the Monterey upgrade.

Now when plugging in my iPhone via USB 3.0 or my Mouse, all that happens is the LED's on my mouse light up (but not the laser) or my iPhone charges, but won't connect to my Mac.

Oddly, both the HDMI and USB-C port on the hub continue to work as expected.

Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately I don't have an Intel Mac to test this on, both machines tested at the place of purchase were M1 based Macs. My Mac, is also M1 based.

M1 with Big Sur = Working USB Hub

M1 with Monterey = Broken USB Hub with only HDMI and USB-C working on the hub, but no USB 3.0

It would be interesting to test with an Intel Mac on both Monterey and Big Sur, to see if the issues are consistent across both chipsets and OS's. The fact of the matter is though, my M1 based machine worked fine with this hub on Big Sur, and Monterey has changed that.

I contacted TOTU, and they willingly refunded me (although they were confident it was not their problem... I'm surprised and grateful lol) I used that to buy an Anker 7-in-one (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PPGWQ15?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details) that was refurbed or something so that it was only about 30 dollars. It is far from ideal, but this hub works. I can also use a usb3.0 male to usbc female adapter to plug the TOTU hub into the Anker one and increase the USB ports that way (yes it's janky). Anyway, 12.1 is supposed to launch sometime later this month... we will have to see if they fix this issue by then.

I am having similar issue with my hub which I purchased from amazon. apple care guy does not even know about this bug and was telling me to reinstall OS. thankful I found this post and I am going to wait for next software release from apple to use my usb mouse.

really pathetic from apple knowing that this bug was detected in beta and still wasn't resolved.

I have this problem also on my Mac Mini M1 . External ASUS BluRay connected to one of the USB 3.1 ports which worked just fine on Big Sur won't read any disks. I decided to install the beta of Monterey but so far nothing.

What's strange is that the drive is there. It's listed and I can control it and see it in the system report but it just won't read and mount any disks,

as mentioned earlier in the thread I swapped the dell supplied USB-C 3.1 gen2 cable to a USB-C 3.1 gen1 cable yesterday afternoon and everything on the dell monitor was working again at 5gbps (where capable) - my 4k web cam was now working and drive transfers were back up to full speed.

But as of this morning I plugged the MacBook back in, after making no changes, and it is back at 480mbps if I use the port furthest away from me. If I use the other USB-C port then I don't see any USB devices at all.

Makes no sense. Have now reset SMC and reinstalled OS X after being on phone to apple support. No change. Will pick it up again with them this evening to see what they suggest.

It's not fix, but this might be a go around until a 12.1 updated to fix the USB-C hubs is released. I'm using a MBP 2019. After wasting a weekend, i found a possible solution that doesn't make my system crash. The Monterey 12.01 made my Anker Apex basically a brick.

I randomly discovered if you are using an external USB hub that has a PD port, don't use the PD port to power your computer. When i used the hub with power it kept crashing my MBP. I then plugged the Apple wall wart directly into the MBP, then i'm using a unpowered USB-C hub (it has a PD port, but i'm not using it) for all my accessories (Web Cam, Keyboard, audio output). Also, i have an external monitor plugged directly into the MBP. I tried a second HDMI monitor plugged into hub, but it also crashed the machine. From what i can tell, you have to plug monitors directly into the computer's USB-C port, and if you want to use a hub don't use the PD port (Also, don't plug any monitor into the hub). My other USB 3.0 devices work fine in the unpowered hub.

This morning, my MBP crashed twice in 30 min when was using the PD port, but since i made the switch above it's done fine. It's just alot of wires all over my desk. Good Luck, Apple fix the issue

Issue: After Mac OS12 upgrade, some devices connected to USB-C hub ports not working. In my case, my Logitech mouse and keyboard worked, but my Logitech webcam did not. After considerable time, Apple support gave me the fix: 1. Turn off computer. 2. On left side of keyboard, press and hold Control & Option keys. 3. Still holding those 2 keys, on right side of keyboard to press Shift. 4. holding all three of those keys for 7 seconds, finally add holding down the Power key. 5. Hold down all four keys for another 7 seconds. 5. Release all keys, then press Power key. After computer reboots, my webcam worked again. I hope this works for you.

Docking station doesn't work for me either.

I have a CalDigit TS3 Plus Dock and am using it on a 2019 MBP 16" that is loaded. With Big Sur the dock worked a champ with an Anker USB powered hub connected to it that has multiple devices (Yeti microphone, webcam, hard drive for Time Machine, and a CAC reader) running, a display port cable connected to a monitor, a USB-C to HDMI cable connected to a monitor, and a 3.5mm audio jack that all ran great. ...until Monterey. Once I got that installed the computer would freeze, unfreeze and repeat the cycle. I had video issues as well, and sometimes the computer would shut down while it was frozen.

I changed cables, added and removed devices, updated the dock firmware and drivers for the computer with no success. I then took the monitors off of the dock and plugged them directly into the MBP. Well, that was the ticket as I no longer have the issues I was having. Monterey has broken the ability for my dock to handle video without throwing the MPB into a fit. So USB 3 is working just fine, as well as all the other connections that I can determine. It just pukes if video is attached.

I'm of the opinion that Apple blew it on this one and am probably going to reinstall Big Sur until this gets fixed. I'll be watching!

I have had similar problems with my USB external hard drives since I upgraded. I literally have been an Apple consumer and even have my Mac 512K in my attic waiting for a future revival. There is absolutely no excuse for this to be happening, NONE. When you leave people with no alternatives even to use the most basic peripherals using USB in 2021 with no coherent fix in sight it is very disturbing and makes me question my own commitment to a brand I have been with for decades. Very disappointing.

Quick update: Not sure why, but i tested my MBP on a Anker USB-C Thunderbolt 3 dock, and it's able to not crash using two external monitors besides all the other USB items (Web Cam, ring light, external speakers).

When i use my Anker Apex USB-C Thunderbolt 4 dock (with 2 monitors and similar USB items) the MBP continues to lock up. I've been working on the Apex USB-C Thunderbolt 4 dock for the past few days with only one external monitor and it has not crashed. The issue is not brand specific, and for me seems to be related to the USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 hub conflicts with driving more than one external monitor.
