USB 3.0 Hub Broken on Mac OS Monterey 12.0.1

Since upgrading to Mac OS Monterey, solely the USB 3.0 port on my Hub has stopped working. Power is allowed to pass through to connected devices, however the transfer of data has stopped working.

Everything was working on Mac OS Big Sur, and it is only since updating to Monterey it has stopped working. I have found several reports on the developer forums for Mac OS stating this was an issue since around Beta 3 for some users, and there are reports on Reddit of other people having this issue.

Apple Support were useless and told me to bring my Mac in for repair (despite it only being 4 days old and the issue happening directly after an update) I took the Hub back to the place of purchase and they tested it on a Mac with Big Sur installed and it worked. When plugging it into another Mac that had been updated to Monterey the 3.0 Port stopped working.

It's an Advent Hub, not some dodgy knockoff one of Amazon. It worked absolutely fine prior to the Monterey upgrade.

Now when plugging in my iPhone via USB 3.0 or my Mouse, all that happens is the LED's on my mouse light up (but not the laser) or my iPhone charges, but won't connect to my Mac.

Oddly, both the HDMI and USB-C port on the hub continue to work as expected.

Same problem here. MacBook Pro 2017 Intel. VAVA hub perfectly working with Big Sur as well as the other 3 USB C ports with several peripherals (external SSD's etc.).

With Monterey installed Saturday:

no USB data exchange on hub

no USB C port working with two different peripherals.

I spent Sunday afternoon to happily downgrade back to Big Sur.

Everything is working perfectly again.

Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately I don't have an Intel Mac to test this on, both machines tested at the place of purchase were M1 based Macs. My Mac, is also M1 based.

M1 with Big Sur = Working USB Hub

M1 with Monterey = Broken USB Hub with only HDMI and USB-C working on the hub, but no USB 3.0

It would be interesting to test with an Intel Mac on both Monterey and Big Sur, to see if the issues are consistent across both chipsets and OS's. The fact of the matter is though, my M1 based machine worked fine with this hub on Big Sur, and Monterey has changed that.

I have a similar issue.

After plugging in a webcam into the hub, the console was flooded with those messages:

UVCUSBDeviceControlInterface: 0x100006b2f [0x1296279f0] Setting control UVCDeviceControl:[CT_AE_PRIORITY_CONTROL] [0x12971a0d0] value {length = 1, bytes = 0x00} error Error Domain=IOUSBHostErrorDomain Code=-536870163 "Unable to send device request." UserInfo={NSLocalizedRecoverySuggestion=, NSLocalizedDescription=Unable to send device request., NSLocalizedFailureReason=}

Error:Unable to abort IO. with reason: (null)

Like yours, the usb device worked fine on big sur.

It would appear that it is a chipset issue within the USB-C hubs with Monterey. I am using a Belkin Multimedia USB-C hub and it is functioning just fine with my M1 MacBook Air. Seeing pretty much the same speed with USB drives as I did with Big Sur.

I have four drives connected, one directly to the hub and the other 3 are connected to a Sabrent USB3 hub connected to the Belkin.

My Dell USB-C hub also started having problems. It powers my MBP (no issues), connects two external monitors (no issues with those) and a Logitech webcam which doesn't seem to work after the computer wakes from sleep or is idle for a long period of time. Unplugging and plugging in the hub resolves the webcam issue sometimes though not always. Never had an issue with it before upgrading to Monterey.

Sadly, I have the same Problem.

i am running the M1 MacBook Pro. Under MacOS BigSur I could use a USB-C HUB from Amazon to connect to my Monitor, as well as some peripherals (A Logitech Webcam and a Blue Yeti Microphone) - All that while PowerDelivery was working as well.

Now with my Mac being updated to Monterey, everything that is connected via USB 3.0 isn't detected by the system. Monitor and PowerDelivery works just fine. but I can't us anything else. tried another USB HUB, same problem.

Hope this gets fixed soon...

I spent 2 hours on the chat with a apple rep and they could not come up with a answer. they had me reboot, create a new admi, reboot in safe mode, rest the sec and nvram none of that worked. They said to reinstall Monterey doing that right now said 6 hours to do it will see if that fixes it not hopeful. I have contacted ikling at ikling at ikling.com to let them know the issue I am having if they can fix it will let people know.

after the full reinstall of Monterey 5 hours no dice still dose not work. Now I am waiting on ikling to get back to me after reporting the issue to them. right now to get to use my portable hard drive I am using a j5 create usb 3.1 type-c to type-A adapter works but it is very slow. When I unplug this adapter and plug in the ikling adapter it sees it as the j5 create one not the ikling one. Not sure why and only one USB port on the ikling works like it is still the J5 Create usb.

I have this problem also on my Mac Mini M1 . External ASUS BluRay connected to one of the USB 3.1 ports which worked just fine on Big Sur won't read any disks. I decided to install the beta of Monterey but so far nothing.

What's strange is that the drive is there. It's listed and I can control it and see it in the system report but it just won't read and mount any disks,

as mentioned earlier in the thread I swapped the dell supplied USB-C 3.1 gen2 cable to a USB-C 3.1 gen1 cable yesterday afternoon and everything on the dell monitor was working again at 5gbps (where capable) - my 4k web cam was now working and drive transfers were back up to full speed.

But as of this morning I plugged the MacBook back in, after making no changes, and it is back at 480mbps if I use the port furthest away from me. If I use the other USB-C port then I don't see any USB devices at all.

Makes no sense. Have now reset SMC and reinstalled OS X after being on phone to apple support. No change. Will pick it up again with them this evening to see what they suggest.

I have an Xcellon MDS31G1 (2x USB 3.1 ports, 1x HDMI, PD Charging and SD reader) which worked fine on my Intel MacBook Air (2019, which I no longer have) and on my M1 Mac Mini under Big Sur. It worked fine, including driving my second monitor, until Monterey came along. Now whenever the monitors go to sleep the one plugged into the Xcellon doesn't return until I remove and replace the Xcellon. All I'm using the Xcellon for is the HDMI port at the moment, and at least I have a workaround.
