USB 3.0 Hub Broken on Mac OS Monterey 12.0.1

Since upgrading to Mac OS Monterey, solely the USB 3.0 port on my Hub has stopped working. Power is allowed to pass through to connected devices, however the transfer of data has stopped working.

Everything was working on Mac OS Big Sur, and it is only since updating to Monterey it has stopped working. I have found several reports on the developer forums for Mac OS stating this was an issue since around Beta 3 for some users, and there are reports on Reddit of other people having this issue.

Apple Support were useless and told me to bring my Mac in for repair (despite it only being 4 days old and the issue happening directly after an update) I took the Hub back to the place of purchase and they tested it on a Mac with Big Sur installed and it worked. When plugging it into another Mac that had been updated to Monterey the 3.0 Port stopped working.

It's an Advent Hub, not some dodgy knockoff one of Amazon. It worked absolutely fine prior to the Monterey upgrade.

Now when plugging in my iPhone via USB 3.0 or my Mouse, all that happens is the LED's on my mouse light up (but not the laser) or my iPhone charges, but won't connect to my Mac.

Oddly, both the HDMI and USB-C port on the hub continue to work as expected.

Same problem here. MacBook Pro 2017 Intel. VAVA hub perfectly working with Big Sur as well as the other 3 USB C ports with several peripherals (external SSD's etc.).

With Monterey installed Saturday:

no USB data exchange on hub

no USB C port working with two different peripherals.

I spent Sunday afternoon to happily downgrade back to Big Sur.

Everything is working perfectly again.

Perhaps you are aware of this already but it may bear repeating ...

USB 3 transfers require USB 3 approved cables. I once unwittingly used a USB 2.0 cable plugged into a USB 3.1 (Gen 2) hub capable of a maximum transfer rate of 10 Gbps. However, the USB 2.0 cable limited the transfer rate to a maximum of 480 Mbps. At first, I thought that the hub was defective until I replaced the USB 2.0 cable with a USB 3.0 one.

I have an M1 MacMini and have a J. Burrows 7 port USB 3.0 hub. Prior to the Monterey update everything was working like a dream! I had a webcam connected which would start up fine. After the update, when I open photobooth, the usb subsystem would become unresponsive. The system itself isn't using any CPU. When I unplug the hub from the back of the mac, and replug it in, i get control of the system again. It's almost as if the usb controllers are getting saturated with a flood of acks? Maybe there was a change in the way usb devices ack? However, heres' the kicker. If I plug in the webcam in the second USB, it works fine. Anyway, I'm unable to use my mic and webcam now, unless I plug it into my machine, but that's not a workable solution, because I've got a KVM too and share the webcam etc with 4 other machines. Apple please have a look at this, or tell us how to gather data and send it to you. Interestingly, when I switch apps from Photobooth to say, chrome for a few second, the webcam switches off. My expectation would've been that the webcam would stay on, regardless of which app i'm focused on?

My hub and peripherals work most of the time now. I occasionally have to restart, or plug power cord into hub so enough ports are available for webcam to go directly to macBook (not through hub). AND... the functions of the Alt and Cmd keys will oddly flip on me! Example of this headeache: the back one word versus whole line of text changes now and then! Before Monterey, I didn't have to think of thi. Now I do.

Fortunately for me USB-C drives speed has turned good with Monterey but as I already said - with a bit of polemic - somebody somewhere in Cupertino is unable to develop good USB drivers as I'm seeing theese as the worst in the world since 1998.

This said, the USB worl is a mess itself. Many product are very low quality products rebranded and sold as per high quality products. This also for hubs, cables, cameras, keyboards, mice, ecc ecc. Therefore I'm asking myself if the problem is just into the dirvers.

Adding myself to the rant... I cannot run TM anymore, the disk external is not working anymore. the strange thing is that MacOS is asking the password for the disk, which I have provided. Then, nothing else happens. I believe this is also an issue with the higher level, as Disk Utilities get a spinning ball and cannot present the disks connected to the Mac... Something is wrong with the disk permissions, the disk mount, and the fact that an external disk is making a spinning ball of Disk Utility, while it was perfectly working with Big Sur, says enough... Never install version .0... never...

I have spent all day trying to get the hub to work no luck the last thing apple support told me was to go back to Big Sur but on looking up how to do it you need A USB DRIVE but the hub that I use to do the usb drive is not working so how can I do what is needed to go back to Big Sur. you need to create a bootable installer on a thumb drive. is there any other way to do it? if not the Hub I bought about a month ago looks like it is no good on my Mac book pro works fine on my I Mac desk top running Monterey.still have a email to ikling but don't think they will get back to me till Monday. Will post if they can help or find a way to get the hub working.

One thing is sure: most accessories, today, are from strange brands which mostly don't meet the required quality standards especially as tecnologies move continuosly versus higher and higher performance and then standards' requirements. I recently had problems with Softraid's kext loading and looked a sw problem. Solved with a usb-c cable among 4. With the other 3, didn't work. All sold as per high quality usb-c cables.

So: where are the problems, sometimes...(?)

Nope. Electronics (as the human body, for example) are very complex systems. We cannot think with "simple" thoughts. Of course, I'm hoping for all you fellows in trouble that's a bug ans update will solve as changing the hardware is expensive. That said, I would have never have switched to a newly released OS version before reading about it around the web. Personally, i did it because I had enrolled the Public Beta program and found that PB 10 and 12.01 RC1 and 2 solved all my unsolvable problems in Big Sur (here is an M1 machine, BTW).

Good luck.
