USB 3.0 Hub Broken on Mac OS Monterey 12.0.1

Since upgrading to Mac OS Monterey, solely the USB 3.0 port on my Hub has stopped working. Power is allowed to pass through to connected devices, however the transfer of data has stopped working.

Everything was working on Mac OS Big Sur, and it is only since updating to Monterey it has stopped working. I have found several reports on the developer forums for Mac OS stating this was an issue since around Beta 3 for some users, and there are reports on Reddit of other people having this issue.

Apple Support were useless and told me to bring my Mac in for repair (despite it only being 4 days old and the issue happening directly after an update) I took the Hub back to the place of purchase and they tested it on a Mac with Big Sur installed and it worked. When plugging it into another Mac that had been updated to Monterey the 3.0 Port stopped working.

It's an Advent Hub, not some dodgy knockoff one of Amazon. It worked absolutely fine prior to the Monterey upgrade.

Now when plugging in my iPhone via USB 3.0 or my Mouse, all that happens is the LED's on my mouse light up (but not the laser) or my iPhone charges, but won't connect to my Mac.

Oddly, both the HDMI and USB-C port on the hub continue to work as expected.

Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately I don't have an Intel Mac to test this on, both machines tested at the place of purchase were M1 based Macs. My Mac, is also M1 based.

M1 with Big Sur = Working USB Hub

M1 with Monterey = Broken USB Hub with only HDMI and USB-C working on the hub, but no USB 3.0

It would be interesting to test with an Intel Mac on both Monterey and Big Sur, to see if the issues are consistent across both chipsets and OS's. The fact of the matter is though, my M1 based machine worked fine with this hub on Big Sur, and Monterey has changed that.

So I have aquired a second replacement. It is the QIYO 9 in one from amazon (Link below). This adapter works for three USB peripherals and at least the HDMI as well. I do not know if you could connect multiple monitors, but it is a possibility. Out of curiosity, has anyone tried the 12.1 public beta? Do you know if it fixes this at all? Time will tell, but hopefully there will be a solution by the end of the year. Right now, Monterey feels sluggish and buggy overall.

I have an Xcellon MDS31G1 (2x USB 3.1 ports, 1x HDMI, PD Charging and SD reader) which worked fine on my Intel MacBook Air (2019, which I no longer have) and on my M1 Mac Mini under Big Sur. It worked fine, including driving my second monitor, until Monterey came along. Now whenever the monitors go to sleep the one plugged into the Xcellon doesn't return until I remove and replace the Xcellon. All I'm using the Xcellon for is the HDMI port at the moment, and at least I have a workaround.

Hello all.

Just for your info. I had many issues with Monterey 12.0.1/Mac Book Pro Intel 2017.

But no way to have external USB device(s) (VAVA hub, San Disk Extreme etc. ) connected.

I then downgraded to Big Sur. And everything was again working.

I waited for a Monterey upgrade.

I've just installed Monterey 12.1.

Everything is now perfectly working again.

It has been a matter of waiting more or less one month to have Apple fixing their issue.

Cheers (?!)

To check out the USB ports on the Xcellon, I hooked an external HDD to it (which was recognized). For whatever reason, with the external drive connected I no longer was losing video through the Xcellon display adapter. That was still with 12.0.1. Now to see if removing the HDD while under 12.1 lets the display stay active.

After the 12.1 update and swapping out one USBC cable that was much thicker, all of my stuff started working again. Every portable drive my HyperX mic, external soundbar, and all the items are charging and communicating. I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020). So glad this is over with, but maybe the biggest and possibly the only wtf for me ever since I switched to Apple products.

I wish everyone Good Luck on their systems as well.

Perhaps you are aware of this already but it may bear repeating ...

USB 3 transfers require USB 3 approved cables. I once unwittingly used a USB 2.0 cable plugged into a USB 3.1 (Gen 2) hub capable of a maximum transfer rate of 10 Gbps. However, the USB 2.0 cable limited the transfer rate to a maximum of 480 Mbps. At first, I thought that the hub was defective until I replaced the USB 2.0 cable with a USB 3.0 one.

No - absolutely helpful, I would love to have an entire website discussing cables and hubs from an "approved" viewpoint. In this fiasco, "approved" is bandied about a lot, without a definition of what that means or what it entails.

I deliberately bought 20gb usb-c cables (6 foot, maybe too long), and then usbc/usb3.x adapters (also saying 10-20gb) , in anticipation of the new Macbook Pro 2021. They don't work with usb3.x....

I have 3 usb hubs, but a couple are older, and they don't work (this is all with 12.1...)

So, if I had a "this will work, get it!" document, I'd be all over it... I do have some experimental hubs/cables coming this week, so I can hope, but any knowledge (from Apple would be nice, other than "buy Apple products) would be helpful.

I think I found a solution for my problem that did not require new cables. At first, my problem continued after upgrading to 12.1. My problem was specific to my Logitech C615 webcam plugged in to Anker hub, which is in turn

plugged into USB-C port on my MacBook Air. The Air is the last of the Intel chip versions, purchased in April of 2020. The other peripherals attached to the hub are a Logitech mouse, a Logitech keyboard (both Bluetooth receivers) and my Dell monitor connected via HDMI. Everything other than the webcam worked with 12.1. and 12.0.1 Before the upgrade to Monterey, everything, including webcam, worked. I spend ungodly amount of time on phone with Apple and Logitech with no results. My solution: plug power cord into the one of the USB-C ports on hub (it seems that only one of the two will accept the power input!) and plug the webcam into the freed-up USBC port on MacBook. It should not be this hard!
