I can easily share this point of view. :-)

I just found a workaround so that Security Update 2021-007 Catalina can be installed... minus 'AppleIntelHD4000GraphicsGLDriver.bundle'. :

As already told I have a clean install of Catalina on a second Harddisk. I installed 'Security Update 2021-006 Catalina' onto this HD. This includes "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelHD4000GraphicsGLDriver.bundle" Version 14.7.18

(This is the last working version of this bundle. Update 007 installs version 14.7.20, which is obviously broken)

I copied this bundle (and only this) to my primary System with 'Security Update 2021-007 Catalina' installed.

After a reboot to my primary system everything works again as expected, all WebGL-Pages can be loaded. :-)

This has the advantage that 'Security Update 2021-007 Catalina' is still installed, so there's no annoying reminder to install new updates from the system preferences. And in fact all Security Updates are installed - only with the exception of the GLDriver bundle.

I think that's currently the least possible violation of system security.

"in safe mode copy to /System/Library/Extensions you must disable system integrity protection"

Ok, i tried this before, but the OS was instable and very slow...

Could you be more precise ?

First : disable SIP...

Then : extract IntelHD4000 files from SecUpd 2021_006 Catalina dmg ?

Could you list these files precisely ?

I found basically four groups of files associated with IntelHD4000...

Did you copy only theses files ?

See screenshot

Because there are much more Appel Intel Graphic files around...

Then : boot your mac in Safe mode (Press Shift on restart after chime)

Then : copy these files to /System/Library/Extensions

Then : reboot (command - R)

Then : enable SIP protection...

Then : reboot into normal mode with SIP enabled

best regards

Denis

Forgoing security updates on a system less than 5 years old when Apple claims it is compatible with the OS is totally not an acceptable work around. When Catalina is no longer receiving security updates, then I can understand it, but these Macs are officially compatible according to Apple.

That they were being manufactured in Oct 2016 and in my case sold Nov 25, less than 5 years before the bug was introduced on Oct 25, 2021, only strengthens the case for Apple to fix the bug.

I opened a ticket on Apple's Feedback Assistant tool, almost a month ago, but they've never replied. I'm not sure if they're even planning another update to Catalina since it's an old OS, unless they discover some more serious security issues.

BTW, this has nothing to do with the Mac Mini 2012 being vintage hardware. if they say Catalina supports Mac Mini 2012 then it should work flawlessly on the system. It's really not up to Apple's standards to deliver faulty OS updates and get away with it by claiming it's for vintage hardware. I'm very disappointed - this is not why I buy Apple products.

I totally agree!

Woohoo.

I'm continuing to upgrade and migrate my newer used Mac mini 2014 (MGEQ2LL/A) as my main home Mac. 16 GiB + 2 TiB SSD + 4 TiB HDD, and currently updating to Monterey 12.1.

Now, if I can find an internal or external WiFi 6/6e solution. It might have to be Ethernet-based because I doubt swapping with an Airport Extreme card from an M1-based system would have Intel kexts anywhere.

My 2012 mini will make a fine spare computer that will see use.
