Can I change login screen with OS Monterey

Since I upgraded to OS Monterey the login screen after I start my laptop shows the purple shades that are literally called "Monterey"

I really don't like the colors! Looking through system preferences I don't see a way to change the image.

Icon yes, but not the screen? Is there something I'm missing? How can I change the image?

I *really* don't like the colors!

The pre-login boot wallpaper now loads from a sealed snapshot. It is not editable.

macOS today operates by separating the system files and the data files into two totally separate volumes. The system files are "sealed". It is, essentially, a read-only volume which Apple distributes. Since the hard disk is encrypted before you login, the computer does not have access to anything other than a little metadata associated with the accounts (username and a small icon and that's about it). Once you enter a password, the data volume can be decrypted. The computer then essentially "merges" the system files and data files together in real time like a zipper through a series of firmlinks.

macOS now boots in a state that is always fresh and identical. Only once you login do all the changes you've made (including wallpaper) become visible to the system.

I’m not by my computer at the minute but what might be possible is to search for an image with the title Monterey, and replace it with a personal image with the title changed to Monterey. I don’t know if this would cause problems so backup first (Time Machine). This obviously depends on the generic login image being titled Monterey in the first place.

This worked for me:

  • Right-click on your desktop and go for Change Desktop Background.
  • The Desktop & Screen Saver settings open up. Tap on the desired wallpaper, available under Dynamic Desktop.
  • Important: If the background image fails to change, check if a small cloud icon with an arrow pointing downwards is displayed, in the top-right corner of the thumbnail.
  • Fix: The same icon is also displayed next to the wallpaper’s nameClick it and the desktop will start downloading. It will show up as a background as soon as the download completes.

I am having a similar problem, except my login/Lock Screen is stuck on the CHROMA RED wallpaper.

When I login, the wallpaper is set to the Monterey. The purple default one. But if I restart my MBP and get to the login, I'm seeing this ugly red one. I tried all the tricks on YouTube, and the ones listed here. Nothing works to change it.

The CHROMA RED, for reference:

With "customization" of everything being one of the hottest trends the past 10 years, it boggles the mind that Apple's developer's have chosen to immutably lock in the boot up screen. I personally find the chosen color scheme abhorrent, but that is irrelevant. We should each have the latitude to select our own screen. I hope the Apple crew will enable us to do so soon.

Apple is not the only business that has taken away owner rights. Owners have no choice on Microsoft updates (even when they suck), and few Android owners have been able to avoid updates as well.

You are sort of proving my point. One should distinguish between "taking away owner rights" and things that ruin functionality (updates that cause failures), versus something cosmetic and unimportant (in my view) such as a login window color. There was never an "owner right" to change this or that color. And other posters went to such extremes to try to change it as to interfere with normal operation (one said his/her Mac would not shut down after a "fix"). The login window probably appears for a minute or two at most before someone logs in or the machine sleeps. This has to be an issue that is pretty low on the list of things for Apple to address.

My FileVault is turned off - maybe that's necessary

Have you tried: Apple menu > System Preferences >Users and Groups > Login Options > (unlock at the bottom) > set Automatic Login to Current User (admin)

This worked for me on my new MacBook Pro

PS. It shouldn't. be so hard to put your own pictures in the Login and Screensaver - it didn't feel like my computer until

I was able to do that.
