Can I change login screen with OS Monterey

Since I upgraded to OS Monterey the login screen after I start my laptop shows the purple shades that are literally called "Monterey"

I really don't like the colors! Looking through system preferences I don't see a way to change the image.

Icon yes, but not the screen? Is there something I'm missing? How can I change the image?

I *really* don't like the colors!

The pre-login boot wallpaper now loads from a sealed snapshot. It is not editable.

macOS today operates by separating the system files and the data files into two totally separate volumes. The system files are "sealed". It is, essentially, a read-only volume which Apple distributes. Since the hard disk is encrypted before you login, the computer does not have access to anything other than a little metadata associated with the accounts (username and a small icon and that's about it). Once you enter a password, the data volume can be decrypted. The computer then essentially "merges" the system files and data files together in real time like a zipper through a series of firmlinks.

macOS now boots in a state that is always fresh and identical. Only once you login do all the changes you've made (including wallpaper) become visible to the system.

This is the same problem that Apple had with those disgusting orange and red colors for BigSur. If the machine has more than one user, one can't change the log in screen where one selects the user to log in.

Shame on you Apple. Such great products spoiled by stupid little things which ought to be so easy to solve.

Don't bother sending Apple feedback - they don't listen because they know best!!.

Unfortunately, Apple, with all due respect, fails to respect the wishes of millions of users in macOS. Monterey's issue is to select and have their preferred "Login Screen Image", yet they allow changes to the desktop image.

This was also the case with BigSur; however, with BigSur there was a workaround that I located that worked. It does not work in Monterey.

The problem is that most users of Apple products have unique personalities and wish to have the flexibility to have their personalities visible, and the current login screen is a looser screen. It is more than a looser it is a constant irritant. Gosh! It is like it is the new COVID attack. How to get rid of it is a big concern.

I was thinking of purchasing one of the new laptops Apple has but the burden of continuing to have such an irritant login screen, would not disappear. Then to think of paying thousands of dollars to see the same login screen, is not acceptable.

If anyone really has a way to change things or has an influence with Apple, do so.

If the ugly image appears, it seems to be because no other image is chosen, so the system defaults to the ugly dynamic ones. What I did is below. I know it seems to conflate the login with the lock screen, but it works. My lock screen image is the same as my desktop image. That might help. Just in case, you can have a different lock screen image if you want. That process is below.

Changing the Login Image

  1. Open a new FINDER window.
  2. Choose the STARTUP disc under LOCATIONS on the left. (It is whatever you called it during setup.)
  3. Click the main volume in the window. (Again, this is whatever you named it.)
  4. Choose USERS, pick the user folder (whatever you named it), and select the PICTURES folder.
  5. Paste the image desired for the login screen to this PICTURES folder.
  6. Close all windows.
  7. Right click DESKTOP and choose CHANGE DESKTOP BACKGROUND.
  8. Under FOLDERS on the left choose PICTURES and click the file just copied.

Note: If you do not want a photo, you can just choose a color from the COLOR. Either way, it seems important to actively click something so that there is a blue selection frame around it. Choosing the CUSTOM COLOR option will give you a DESKTOP BACKGROUND, but it does not seem to affect the LOGIN SCREEN.

9. Test it by logging out.

Changing the Lock Screen Image

This process is documented elsewhere in the thread, but...

  1. Open a new FINDER window.
  2. Choose the STARTUP disc name under LOCATIONS on the left. (It is whatever you called it during setup.)
  3. Choose main volume in the window. (Again, this is whatever you named it.)
  4. Choose the LIBRARY FOLDER and then CACHES, DESKTOP PICTURES, and then the folder with the long alphanumeric name.
  5. Paste the photo for the lock screen in there. Make sure it is named "lockscreen.png."

Note: Remove all other images from the folder except for lockscreen.png. Otherwise, nothing will change. Also, sometimes, it may require a restart to complete wipe any of the cached information.

Oddly enough, this happens when I do a clean install of the operating system. When there is an upgrade, I then get my desktop picture showing with the login window. This has happened with previous Mac OS upgrades as well.

This week there was a problem with the partition map that was set off with a recent upgrade to Default Folder X (which caused numerous crashes and kernel panics (since removed from future service!). The drive had to be wiped, the Mac OS reinstalled (12.1) and then migrate all my data from backup (18 hours!). The login screen was the default Monterey ugly purple. Couldn't get it changed. Then upgraded to 12.2, and voila! my white apple logo with charcoal background appeared as the log in screen.

Agree. That's exactly the point. I don't want to disable FileVault to be able to fix the Login screen wallpaper, and there are reasons why I often power off the laptop as opposed to just put it to sleep or lock the screen, so I need to see the ugly thing every time I start up the machine.

By the way, I actually don't have any issues with the default Monterey purple thing as most of people in the thread, but in fact, since I turned on FileVault I have the "Chroma Red" Light (Still) one, which I find really awful. If it was a thing with the Apple logo or a plain dark background I probably wouldn't mind at all.

I used to be one of those people thinking a stupid background is inconsequential, but after half a year of this I'm bothered by it more and more. Not sure if not being able to change it makes it even worse, but I can't believe Apple hasn't fixed it yet after all this time and so many complaints. Is it really that hard? I wouldn't mind having to go through a manual workaround like disabling FileVault, changing the wall paper and re-enabling it, but it seems that wouldn't work the way FileVault and the new separate system/data/recovery volumes work, as per another thread I read regarding the topic.

Anyway, I guess if enough of us keep posting about it it will get eventually fixed, or maybe we just need to wait for the next O.S. to come out around September, which I'm sure is going to have its own annoying bugs... ... just maybe not this one: the infamous wallpaper-gate :D
