Can I change login screen with OS Monterey

Since I upgraded to OS Monterey the login screen after I start my laptop shows the purple shades that are literally called "Monterey"

I really don't like the colors! Looking through system preferences I don't see a way to change the image.

Icon yes, but not the screen? Is there something I'm missing? How can I change the image?

I *really* don't like the colors!

I am having a similar problem, except my login/Lock Screen is stuck on the CHROMA RED wallpaper.

When I login, the wallpaper is set to the Monterey. The purple default one. But if I restart my MBP and get to the login, I'm seeing this ugly red one. I tried all the tricks on YouTube, and the ones listed here. Nothing works to change it.

The CHROMA RED, for reference:

Hi

Stop the presses. Final resolution of this may need to wait for 12.0.2. I had already followed all the steps of Angelika241. Thank you Angelika241!!

Restarting gave me the regular Monterey desktop some of would like to change.

Next step was to change my desktop photo to the Eiffel Tower. Restart. Same Monterey image.

Restart and TURN OFF THE FILEVAULT. Restart.

The sign in image is my smiling face with a backdrop of the Eiffel Tower. Restart. Still the Eiffel Tower. Restart.

Turn ON FileVault. Restart.

The same multi blue and purple Monterey log in screen.

Would someone else out there try to duplicate this for a second opinion.

I'd also like the moderator to run this issue up to folks in a higher pay-grade for the next OS update.

Time for some Geritol and sleep, lolol

The login background will be the same as your desktop background only if 1) FileVault is turned off, 2) you are the only user and guest user is turned off AND 3) in the users & groups preference pane you have "Display login window as List of users" checked. If you have "name and password" checked it WILL NOT work. Furthermore, it is absolutely impossible to replace the actual default image file Monterey uses: (/System/Library/Desktop Pictures/Monterey Graphic.heic) It's on the encrypted system volume and is completely inaccessible to the user.

I'm on MacbookPro M1max 16" on OSX 12.0.1 and I have exactly this configuration on the settings: 1) FileVault is turned off, 2) I am the only user and guest user is turned off AND 3) in the users & groups preference pane I have "Display login window as List of users" checked .... and it doesn't work ! the login screen image is not my wallpaper and it's not the /System/Library/Desktop Pictures/Monterey Graphic.heic image either. instead I always have /System/Library/Desktop Pictures/Chroma Red.heic in the background of the login screen which is absolutely horrible !

Unfortunately, Apple, with all due respect, fails to respect the wishes of millions of users in macOS. Monterey's issue is to select and have their preferred "Login Screen Image", yet they allow changes to the desktop image.

This was also the case with BigSur; however, with BigSur there was a workaround that I located that worked. It does not work in Monterey.

The problem is that most users of Apple products have unique personalities and wish to have the flexibility to have their personalities visible, and the current login screen is a looser screen. It is more than a looser it is a constant irritant. Gosh! It is like it is the new COVID attack. How to get rid of it is a big concern.

I was thinking of purchasing one of the new laptops Apple has but the burden of continuing to have such an irritant login screen, would not disappear. Then to think of paying thousands of dollars to see the same login screen, is not acceptable.

If anyone really has a way to change things or has an influence with Apple, do so.

There seem to be a few of us who are stuck with this god-awful Chroma Red login screen. (While I sympathize with people who dislike the default Monterey login screen, I really have to ask them to hold our beers on this case because, good grief, is that Chroma Red screen jarring, as fellow sufferers, "showbizmanager" and "jjcliff" have demonstrated!)

At this point, it may probably be best for those of us trapped on the "Chroma Red" login screen to start our own topic. It seems to be different than the Pink Canyon that others are suffering through so that they can resolve their problem and we can resolve ours.

I have the same problem, except it's a different wallpaper (the light variant of the "Chroma Red" wallpaper). I tried the "UUID\lockscreen.png" thing, but the file was already there and already set to my current (different) wallpaper. Tried changing it anyway, but the login wallpaper is still stubbornly set to that "Chroma Red" wallpaper.

It must be cached somewhere on the drive, but I haven't been able to find where. (I never even set this as my wallpaper, so it's a mystery where/when this was chosen in the first place.)

With all due respect to "APPLE," users should not have to be figuring out workarounds to solve this desire to change the login screen on their respective Apple devices, right? There should be no questions whether you are in Vault mode or not; it should just work. However, it does not!

Then to leave the problem in the hands of the apple discussion/community is a copout.

Thank you. That worked in Monterey. I chose "Photo Wall". in the panel on the left. I loaded my own photos in the box labelled "Source" and I right-clicked in the upper right-hand corner of the "Source" box. I then saw a display of the screen saver: my images scrolled across the screen. I clicked on the screen saver to return to my desktop. I did not shut down my computer to see if it works on startup; but, it should.

This man's accent is pretty thick, but there are captions at the bottom. It worked (sorta) for me. I have two users on my account (one admin, one guest) and initial login is the default, but once you select the admin account, my custom background displays and asks me for my password. Thanks for trying to help. I did follow the instructions up to 59 seconds, but I did not see any "Advanced Options" on the Users & Groups preferences. I did find the UUID on the disk utility, but the rest of the instructions were complicated and I gave up. I guess I can live with the Monterey screen; it does not last long! Thanks again.

Thanks! I have a MacBook M1 (2020) and got rid of the vile purple starter screen by turning off FileVault (I already had 'List of users' and disabled guest user). It automatically turned to my wallpaper, which is the same as the file called 'lockscreen.png' in the folder with the long name (found under '/Library/Caches/Desktop Pictures').
