Can I change login screen with OS Monterey

Since I upgraded to OS Monterey the login screen after I start my laptop shows the purple shades that are literally called "Monterey"

I really don't like the colors! Looking through system preferences I don't see a way to change the image.

Icon yes, but not the screen? Is there something I'm missing? How can I change the image?

I *really* don't like the colors!

I am having a similar problem, except my login/Lock Screen is stuck on the CHROMA RED wallpaper.

When I login, the wallpaper is set to the Monterey. The purple default one. But if I restart my MBP and get to the login, I'm seeing this ugly red one. I tried all the tricks on YouTube, and the ones listed here. Nothing works to change it.

The CHROMA RED, for reference:

Thank you for this, it didn't work the first time for me, but did eventually after playing around a bit.

I followed steps 1-7 exactly as written but wasn't sure what to do about the lockscreen.png text which appears between Steps 7 and 8. Turns out there is nothing to do; the system creates that file on its own after a restart based on the image selected in Step 11.

Still, my chosen lock screen didn't appear after Step 12.

Here's the magic - I then selected Lock Screen from the  menu and it switched to the lock screen with my chosen image! I then restarted again to confirm, and sure enough, my M1 MBP running MacOS Monterey now launches my screen.

Thanks again!

It's very possible to modify the startup image in Monterey and I was able to do it.

First follow the instructions given by angelica241 except that there's one last step that you have to do.

1)             System Preferences > Users & Groups.

2)             Open lock to make changes.

3)             Right click on user in left column > Advanced Options.

4)             Copy UUID value.

5)             Go to /Library/Caches/Desktop Pictures.

6)             If it doesn't exist create Desktop Pictures folder.

7)             Inside Desktop Pictures create folder with UUID value as name.

If it exists, just open folder and put the picture you want in it and name it as "lockscreen.png".  It has to be a .png picture.

8)             Then close folder and right-click on folder > Get Info.

9)             Open lock to make changes.

10)          Grant permission to Read & Write to user, admin, everyone.

11)          Close lock

12)          Open System Preferences >FileVault and disable it.

(The new startup screen will work.

13)          Restart computer

14)          If you enable the File Vault again, the startup screen won’t work anymore.

I believe you are confusing "login screen" and "startup screen". The pink monterey image is in "login screen" - please see attached image:

You can see that it's the pink lockscreen image, however when I log out of the computer completely and re-start, this is what's in the login screen and this is what we're trying to change:

This image is not in the desktop pictures folder. It is the login screen upon re-start/log out. Our question is WHERE is this image and HOW do we change it....

Looking for this answer.

Don't know if you are talking about the login screen (where you wouldn't see thru system preferences) since you haven't logged in to get to system preferences.

But if you are looking to change your desktop color or other ways to have it look go to to system preference>desktop and screen saver, click on desktop and click any number of choices.

I’m not by my computer at the minute but what might be possible is to search for an image with the title Monterey, and replace it with a personal image with the title changed to Monterey. I don’t know if this would cause problems so backup first (Time Machine). This obviously depends on the generic login image being titled Monterey in the first place.

This is the same problem that Apple had with those disgusting orange and red colors for BigSur. If the machine has more than one user, one can't change the log in screen where one selects the user to log in.

Shame on you Apple. Such great products spoiled by stupid little things which ought to be so easy to solve.

Don't bother sending Apple feedback - they don't listen because they know best!!.

It is the login background image that I want to change, not the desktop image.

If I read your instructions correctly when I change the desktop it instantly changes but I do not want to change my beach scene desktop background. It is the Monterey color login backdrop that I do not care for. Actually I have an orange Mac 24 and like that color for the login.

thanks

• I am running macOS Monterey.

• I turned off the 'Guest User' Account under - System Preferences/Users & Groups - (This is important - I believe that you can only have one user account active for your custom Lock Screen image to show up)

• I searched for this folder - /Library/Caches/Desktop Pictures

• Your UUID folder (crazy long name of letter and numbers) is in the above folder you searched for.

• Find this file 'lockscreen.png', and replace it with your image and the same name - 'lockscreen.png'

• Restart your Mac
