Screen Flickering at Boot - MacBook Pro 14

So, I just noticed this since this is my first reboot since I got it.

The screen flickers very weird when my Mac boots. Anyone else facing this?

Hii

I have tried the option to reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and it solved the issue for me.

just simply shut down your laptop and make sure the power cable is connected, then hold the buttons (Control, Option, Shift) for 7 seconds then hold the power button until you see the login page.

I hope it will solve your issue too.

I am no expert and if the resetting vram and the other link work then you can ignore the following,

I would test by rebooting the machine several times. If it still has the same flickering issue it is most likely a defective panel. Generally speaking a flickering screen should not be limited to only boot up. It should happen intermittently or constantly all the time if it is a hardware issue. It may be difficult to see the flickering in certain lighting conditions so try to check in different lighting conditions. If you still only see flickering at boot up then it is possibly a software issue.

You can wipe the ssd and reinstall MacOS. If you have tried all steps and still have no resolution then try and boot into recovery by holding power button. You should back up any data before beginning this process. Once in recovery erase your ssd and then reinstall MacOS. Once the process has completed and your device still has a flickering issue then I would be pretty confident that you need to return if possible or take in for repair.

Good Luck!!

Yes, the SMC and NVRAM reset are for Intel macs…

For M1 the reset happens automatically when you completely shutdown your MBP , unplug everything and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. Then you power it back on…

when does the beach ball show up? Could you explain in detail please…

have you tried running a ‘First Aid’ cycle on it?

Have similar issue as well and going back and forth between the tele-technical support by Apple (nothing resolve), and went down to Apple store. First the staff said might be a software issue and ask for me to wait for the next OS update. After I left, called and informed me to try turning off the FileVault under System Preferences. It works, no more flickering at boot.

I've the same issue as well. Screen flickers after inputting the password -- goes black for a second or so then returns to its normal state. Went to apple store to get it checked. They diagnosed every part of the device but couldn't find any fault and suggested that it's a software bug. Hoping to get a fix in the next version of macOS Monterey.

That’s exactly what I’ve been through today. While we are waiting for the new software update, we can turn off that FileVault to temporary eliminate the flickering issue however that might bring in privacy security issue after.

Given that flickering issue is not bothering me in my daily use other than login, I’ll just bear with it till the next MacOS update hopefully can fix this bug.

It's a pity that what is recommended so far (reset PRAM/SMC) is for Intel based Mac!

I noticed that screen flickering (sudden change in brightness cycling for about 4 seconds) occurs also when switching from full screen view and normal desktop view on my MBP 14 2021 (M1 pro high model).

I started noticing this artifact after 12.0.1 update.. And the spinning beachball show up as well...

I thought that it could be related to ProMotion refresh rate, but even setting a constant Frame Rate (60Hz) the problem persists..
