Hi, Haley!

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. We see that you are experiencing a problem listening to music from your iPhone while in your car, though it will still charge. We're happy to help!

Based on what you've described, we recommend following the steps under the "Connect using USB playback" section of How to connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your car - Apple Support, which you can find below:

"Connect using USB playback

  1. Restart your device and your car.
  2. Make sure that your device is unlocked and on the Home screen.
  3. If possible, try to connect using another cable or USB port. Check the manual that came with your car to learn how to connect an Apple device.
  4. Check your charging port for any debris or damage. Make sure that your charging cable is properly inserted into the port.
  5. Update your device.
  6. Make sure that your stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.
  7. Try playing audio from a different app. If you can't play audio from a third-party app, contact the app developer for help. If you can't play audio from an Apple app, contact Apple Support."

Best!

Hi just updated my iPhone XR iOS to 15.1 I use the USB port in my car to play music ever since the update my iPhone only charges and will not play music through the USB port. Yes I bought a new cord still didn’t work. Called apple support they couldn’t help me, everything they offered didn’t work I just want to delete this update. I shut off off my phone reset all my settings and nothing worked. I have a 2011 Buick Regal and the USB port was working perfectly fine before the update any help please lmk

Just called apple again got on the phone with a senior rep she said that I have to bring my car to the dealership to do a stereo update. I call the dealership and he pretty much laughed at me and apple because he stated my car is not the issue it’s apple, he also mentioned it’ll be 150 dollars to update my stereo and he said that probably still won’t fix the issue. Which is crazy that a stupid iPhone update is trying to cost me 150 dollars to update my stereo settings. Only had iOS 15.1 for 3 days and it’s completely ruining everything. My phone charges but won’t play music through my aux cord. I have a XR and 2011 Buick Regal apple it’s not my car or my chords it’s your stupid update.

It’s incredibly frustrating to pay for Apple Music, family sharing, etc and not have the ability to use it in your vehicle out of no where. I have watched multiple videos on theory of repairs, purchased new charging cords via Apple for the USB port, re-paired device to vehicle, restart phone, restart car, delete Apple Music app and reinstall, etc. Apple please get it together. If you have this many complaints from your paying customers this needs to be a top priority in customer service. Do better! I for one would have never paid for Apple Music if I enjoyed listening to the junk music on FM radio. Make it make sense.

Sincerely,

Sick of throwing away money!

Grrr, 2011 Chevy Cruze RS owner here as well… just got my car back after being repaired and was worried that something had happened at the mechanics to cause this and i am very upset to hear that it is an issue with IOS 15. I have an iphone 11 and would expect that these kinds of issues would not happen on a relatively new device. C’mon apple get it together, really hoping this gets resolved soon. Also thanks to everyone who started this thread though for saving me from going through the pain of trying to get my car fixed.

I am glad to have found this forum. I was on the phone with Apple today for hours. I have a 2012 Chevy Cruz. Nothing worked. I am extremely sad and I can’t believe that Apple isn’t going to fix this. This needs to be fixed! Apple, YOUR update is what caused this. Let’s do the right thing here. (Has anyone tried the old school aux jack — the plug— rather than USB and if so, does that work?)

Just wasted my money on the aux adapter, confirmed does not work on 2014 Chevy Cruze.

Also having the same problem as everyone else. My usb cable always worked for music, now it only charges and does not play music. Called support and support told me they might be able to fix it on the next update but I won’t keep my hopes up. everything could be fixed if we could just downgrade back to our previous update. But of course apple won’t let us do that.

Exactly krysten, I’ve already bought and tried the adapters and are now sending them back. They do not work on my 2014 Chevy Cruze. Nothing works for that matter*. It’s not right for apple to not allow us to downgrade to a previous version where we can play our music. Also my full time job is doordash and involves driving. I need my music to get through my shifts. This is ridiculous and not right.
