No "New Message Sound" in Mail after upgrading to Monterey

Dear Apple Community,

Since upgrading my 27” 2019 Intel iMac’s OS from 10.14.6 to Monterey 12.0.1 , Mail’s incoming messages no longer have an associated alert sound.

I’ve tried suggested fixes that have been proposed in older versions of Mac OS, but none have worked. For instance:

  1. Mail > Preferences > General: select a different message sound, and then reboot.
  2. System Preferences > Notifications & Focus > Mail > Allow Notifications: off, and then reboot.
  3. Reboot in Safe Mode: still no incoming message sound.
  4. Reboot in Recovery Mode, and re-install Monterey: still no incoming email sound.

I’d kindly appreciate any assistance. (System information attached).

Thank you.

Bart

No response from Apple to the bug report. However, I've updated Monterey today from Mac OS 12.0.1 to 12.1 and I'm now receiving incoming email alerts, but for the following exception. If I try to send myself an email from say the bk@...com.au account to the sales@...com.au account, then no incoming alert is sounded. It only seems to work if incoming from an outside source.

Note also that in the System Preferences > Notifications & Focus > Mail window that there is still no checkbox option of "Play sound for notification". Snowmill indicated that this option should be there.

Hi there Soundless Folks - okay, I've just got an update from Apple. Here's what they say:

"This issue is currently being looked into by the engineering team and should have a fix for this soon. It is likely it will be fixed within the next couple updates."

Almost 1 year on and Apple engineers have not solved the problem.

Update: just spoke to Apple Tech. His Big Sur 11.6.1 does NOT show the 4th line (Play sound on notification) but his Monterey 12.0 DOES have the 4th line. You upgraded directly to 12.0.1 and the 4th line does NOT show.

I also noticed that you never had Big Sur installed so you may have never known that the 4th line had been missing and corresponding missing New Message sound.

Just a theory. I hope someone with 12.0 will reply and confirm the above.

I am still on Big Sur 11.6.1 and have had the problem for at least a year. Performed the exact steps above as you have to no avail.

In my endless searching, I called up an independent help site from 2014 that suggested to make sure that the 'Play Sound' box in Mail Notifications in SysPrefs was checked. Obviously that box is no longer there.

Notice that the 'Play Sound' box is available for most notifications - look at your own screen shot. Do you think that is the solution - have Apple add that box back to Mail Notifications?

I am at a loss. Been trying to fix this endlessly. Hopefully someone will respond with a fix that I could apply to Big Sur and then I will be ready for Monterey.

Good luck!

I upgraded from Big Sur to Monterey 12.1 on 12/13 also and still no alert sound on new email. 4th line still missing from SysPrefs/ Notifications/ Mail.

What is amusing that previously, and still now, whenever I SEND an email, I get the New Message sound and THEN the sending Swoosh! I even changed the New Message 'ding' to 'Crystal' so now I hear 'Crystal' and then Swoosh. Fun.

What isn't fun, is that most times I am not aware I have a new email until later when I purposely look for any.

PS Although I am 'following' this thread, I do not receive any notifications for new comments like yours. Could be my VPN or could be that I regularly wipe out cookies. Just happened by chance to search for other solutions and by magic, your post showed up. At least I know it is not just me that has this problem.

BTW, whenever I do an OS upgrade, when finished, I immediately perform a restart. So I do not know whether the New Message sound worked right after the upgrade but before my restart.

I visited an Apple Reseller store today and checked both an iMac and MacBook running Mac OS 12.1. I can report that it's not a fault that the option for 'Play sound for Notifications' is absent for the Mail app:

System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Notifications tab -> Mail

That option is present for some apps and not for others.

As for the behaviour of a sound accompanying incoming emails on my computer...well that still seems to be sporadic. If there are unread emails when I boot up the iMac and Mail launches, then I hear the sound. However, throughout the day some emails are blessed with the mail alert sound whilst others are not. I'm yet to see a pattern.
