Photo booth videos are saving as corrupted/blank files.

If I record a video on my mac photo booth that surpasses 3 or 4 minutes it saves as an empty video. 0:00 seconds and I'm unable to play it. This began happening after I updated to MacOS Monterey. I have put my computer into safe mode, changed, users, restarted, deleted photobooth library and made a new one etc. Any help would be great. I've attached a photo as an example.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.0

UPDATE--

I contacted Apple support both over chat and over phone (after a long conversation over chat they told me this issue could only be resolved over phone, but then the first person who called me back actually did not know the issue at all and said they needed to transfer me to a different department...such a mess!).

After the end, they told me there's no way they could retrieve the content of such a corrupted file, and the only way I could do is to not use Photo Booth, but use QuickTime Player to record videos. They also said the engineers were aware of this issue and they might have an update....But my important video is gone and there is no solution at all on that...

Hi @Old Toad

I have already put my mac in Safe Mode multiple times and haven't had much success. Although, whenever I go into safe mode I can't even use photobooth at all! When I open the application it says "No camera detected." When I go out of safe mode and back to regular mode the camera works but the videos don't save.

Thanks for your response. Let me know if you have any other suggestions :)

I am on Monterey 12.3.1, MBP 16 inch 2021 M1 Max.

I recorded a 45 minute funeral talk today and the file is showing the same symptoms, 0 length, will not open, obviously this is devastating as we were going to share the video with friends and family who could not attend.

Tried video repair tools and they only can recover 25 minutes of unsynced video. I fear we may have lost it forever now because of this awful bug.

This is still a problem for me; I have a late 2016 MacBook Air running on Monterey 12.3.1 - I just updated it last night. I recorded a 2:30 test video and it just read 0:00 in the lower right, showed the corrupted screen that people have been posting when I tried to play it. I need to record a 20min video for school today, so I guess it's off to find plan B for that. Worked well last semester (in the fall).

Same issue here. Good to know I'm not alone, but it's very sad to read these replies and hear of the important footage that people have lost. I wasn't happy with the Monterey update; I had to do it just to open the latest version of numbers, trying to download a file for a coworker. Update took over an hour and by that point they had found another solution. So, I basically updated for no reason, and then had to reconfigure details to get things to look similar to the old version which I was happy with.

Now we've got apps not working---just disappointing; haven't experienced problems like this with Apple before, which is much of the reason I've stuck with Macs. If this isn't resolved quickly I'll be disuaded to use Apple. Hope you guys can get your footage back. My latest recording: it's a bummer to lose but thankfully wasn't as important as funeral footage, or project work.

I've spent 5 days narrating my book The Semantics of i AM, while also videoing it through Photobooth with a green screen.

After completing 100 -150 pages of narration, I checked the videos. They were empty. That's an expensive redo!

Is my MacbookPro a commercial grade machine, and Apple? I see this problem is quite old.

Yet, nothings being done to resolve it. At least put out an advisory if the software is no longer fit for purpose and your engineers lack the skills to resolve this! I don't have the resources to just lose a week like this. We all have issues, but to leave these people hanging doen't say a lot for your conviction to excellence. The file info shows saved files are in the 100's of MB's

so the content is there. It's just seems that the resulting .mov file can't be played on any normally compatible player. VLC shows the duration as 00:00.

Do you have a resolution yet. If not, why not?

Kind Regards,

Geoff

I've been facing the same issue this month (100 years after the first complaints)! I need to produce 7 videos a day (since August 1st) and what drives me mad is that only at the end of the recording will I know if it actually recorded. It is a very stressful moment, my friend. Yesterday, I had the stupid

three times in a row after giving my best at every single recording. I was so mad, I just stopped working and took a 2-hour walk. Today, I'm scared of even trying again. I guess I'm gonna need an external camera. I bought this MacBook Pro (14", 2021) in February this year. The least I could expect is that it works, non?

So frustrating. Not only I can't record simple photo booth videos on an expensive MPB M1 Max, but also I lost the chance to have some important stuff recorded, because the app was behaving normally while supposedly recording. Come on, Apple, it's been months since this was first reported, I can't believe it still is a thing. Here it seems to record only short videos. I used Wondershare Video Repair but it didn't quite work as the "repaired" version is totally messed up.

I am so gutted. This just happened to me with an important video assessment I was trying to complete at work. I did a quick troubleshooting session through Apple Chat-the only thing we tried so far is rebooting in safe mode and trying to open the video that way which did not work. I will reach out to support again later today but am feeling pretty hopeless that it will be recovered. This is such a bummer.
