How do I solve the "This movie cannot be displayed" error?

I tried to play a movie from Apple TV on my M1 MacBook Air. It will not display. I get the error "The selected movie won't play on your display. This movie can only be displayed on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). What are the steps to resolve this issue? I have restarted and verified my hardware and software are updated.

Hey there 67bonz,

We watch movies all the time on our own MacBook Pro, and we'd like to help get those movies working right on your own MacBook Air.

Let's begin with some basics:

  1. Regarding your Mac and the error message you get, does this only occur for a specific movie, or does it happen with all movies you attempt to stream on your Mac through the Apple TV app?
  2. As you have a compatible model, the latest version is macOS 12.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. Here's how to first Back up your Mac with Time Machine, and afterwards, here's How to update the software on your Mac.
  3. Do other devices signed into the same Apple ID have issues playing the same movie?

Cheers!
